Office Assistant for Recreation and Community Programs

The City of Menlo Park is a great place to work! We are now hiring Office Assistants to support a wide variety of programs including recreation centers, gymnasium and sports, summer camps, community events and senior center programs for approximately 10-20 hours per week. This hourly, at-will, part-time (non-benefited) position offers paid work experience, flexible part-time schedule, and on-the-job training and support. Shifts are available mornings, afternoons, evenings and weekends. Summer seasonal positions available.

Office Assistants provide a variety of office support activities to an assigned program or division. Office Assistants are expected to provide professional and courteous customer service at all times; greet and assist program visitors; answer the telephone in a courteous and professional manner; provide accurate information and answer general questions or forward calls to appropriate staff. Office Assistants also are tasked to open and secure assigned facilities; set up, arrange, and take furniture and equipment and ensure set up is in accordance with customer needs and requests for classes, rentals, meetings, and special events; monitor the proper and safe use of City facilities by the general public and ensure adherence to rules and policies; ensure the cleanliness and safety of facilities throughout the day. As experience is gained, assignments become more varied and are performed with greater independence. Candidates must demonstrate proficiency with word processing, data entry and organization, telephone and counter reception, record keeping, verbal and written communication, and customer service.

Currently, the City is preparing to open a brand-new, state-of-the-art multi-service center known as the Belle Haven Community Campus. This new campus is on track to open soon and will feature a senior center, youth center, recreation center, gymnasium, swim center and branch library. The City is seeking qualified candidates at our recreation and community program facilities throughout Menlo Park to enhance our team’s capacity. This position is responsible for driving a City owned vehicle to transport Belmont Residents to and from the Belmont Senior and Community Center.  The incumbent may perform other tasks as assigned by Parks & Rec/Senior Center Staff.

Shift: 

Tuesday 9am - 1pm

Wednesday 9am - 1pm

Thursday 9am - 1pm

BUILDING ATTENDANT

Salary:  $16.54 to $27.56/hour, non-benefitted position, DOE

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES

Facility duties may include, but are not limited to:

• Unlock and lock buildings for renters and programs.
• Be present and assist renters during events.
• Set up and breakdown tables and chairs for rentals and program classes.
• Maintain and keep facilities clean during and after events.
• Move furniture/equipment and return to appropriate storage areas after events.
• Assist renters with facility equipment usage.
• Clean sinks, counters, mirrors, stalls, floors, restrooms, and garbage disposal before and after rentals and program classes to ensure facilities are clean inside and outside.
• Performs duties within OSHA standards.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

Works under general supervision of the Facilities Supervisor.

QUALIFICATIONS

• Ability to relate well to the public.
• Be reliable and responsible.
• Inform renters of current facility policies and procedures.
• Demonstrate poise and good judgment.
• Work flexible hours including weekends or holidays.
• Move furniture and operate custodial equipment.
• Lift 50 pounds; carry 30 pounds.
• Follow oral and written directions.
• Work independently.
• Respond to emergency situations quickly and efficiently.

Desired experience:

Previous public contact experience desirable.  Knowledge of general custodial cleaning apparatus.

Education/Licenses:

High school graduate or equivalent.  Valid California Driver’s License required.

Police Department

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

• Knowledge of the principles, practices, and methods of municipal budgeting, finance, and/or public administration;
• Ability to write and present reports and recommendations;
• Ability to demonstrate competency in research and analysis;
• Ability to work as a team member and respond in a positive manner to supervision.

Education: Equivalent to a Bachelor’s Degree from a four-year college or university with major work in public or business administration or related field.

Experience: One to two years of general administrative experience, preferably in grant administration in local government.

License: Possession of a valid Class “C” California Driver's License.
