THE POSITION

The City is currently seeking General Maintenance Workers. This temporary position works with the City’s maintenance staff to perform: unskilled labor in the parks and landscape medians, street and sidewalk maintenance, street sign maintenance, and building maintenance. Duties include, but are not limited to: raking, emptying trash cans and litter removal, irrigation repair, weeding, edging, street sign maintenance and graffiti removal. Work is closely supervised; work methods are explained in specific terms and work is subject to frequent review. 

Incumbents must possess the physical and mental capacity to work under the conditions described in this document and to perform the duties required by their assigned position.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES

• Knowledge of methods, materials, and equipment used in landscaping, street and sidewalk maintenance, and building maintenance, as well as safety practices and precautions to be used in work.
• Skill in operating hand and power tool equipment such as rakes, pick and shovel, etc.
• Ability to work outdoors in all weather and to follow oral and written instructions. Intermittently, sit while studying or listening to training; bend, squat, climb, kneel and twist when performing maintenance, repair, or installation tasks; perform simple and power grasping, pushing, pulling, and fine manipulation; and lift or carry heavy weights up to 90 lbs.; work in conditions of various outdoor exposure.
• Capable of working independently.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

• Driving a city truck is required for the position and the applicant must have an acceptable driving record, subject to California DMV pull records.
• Ability to work Saturday and/or Sunday shifts.  Hours are 7AM-4:30PM and may fluctuate due to operational needs.

The City of Berkeley invites you to apply for the position of Senior Solid Waste Supervisor in the Zero Waste Division of the Public Works Department! In this role, you will have the opportunity to collaborate with the Zero Waste Operations Manager and the Solid Waste Supervisor(s) on a daily basis to ensure that all operations are carried out safely and in compliance with environmental obligations. In addition, this role oversees the onboarding and recurring training programs for Solid Waste Workers and Drivers; interacts with the Division Manager to implement initiatives, policies, and procedures; and works closely to resolve customer service issues that arise at the council level.

The Senior Solid Waste Supervisor also works closely with peers across all operations to ensure consistent safety and operational standards and performance. Furthermore, this position leads the implementation of new routing and customer data management systems, participates in equipment purchase committees, and determines the staffing and resources needed to achieve desired operational goals.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

A typical way of gaining the knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position is equivalent to graduation from high school and five (5) years of increasingly responsible journey level experience in integrated solid waste collection, diversion and disposal which included two (2) years at the level equivalent to the Solid Waste Supervisor class.

Other requirements include possession of a valid class "C" California driver's license and have a satisfactory driving record. Candidates must be willing to work evening, early morning, holidays, and weekend shifts. Candidates must report changes in status of driver’s license.

ABOUT THE POSITION
The City of Gilroy is recruiting for a full-time Environmental Programs Manager in our Public Works Department. In this exciting opportunity the Environmental Programs Manager (EPM) will be at the forefront of shaping and implementing environmental initiatives that have a lasting impact on our community.  The EPM will work under the supervision of the Public Works Director and will oversee a comprehensive environmental protection program and ensure compliance in the areas of solid waste, waste reduction, recycling, green waste, municipal stormwater system, and energy and natural resources conservation. The AB 617 Senior Environmental Planner will join a high performing and motivated team of professionals who work in deep partnership with frontline communities most impacted by air pollution. You will lead and participate in the successful preparation and implementation of community-scale air quality plans in partnership with Air District staff, community members and partner organizations, and work to support communities and local governments determine how to best improve air quality and reduce health disparities while centering equity and addressing environmental justice. To be successful in this role, you must be a strong team player, have strong communication and analytical skills and be able to work with people of varied backgrounds and perspectives, including low-income communities of color and communities overburdened by air pollution. You will leverage your knowledge of land use, transportation, air quality, equity and environmental justice to conduct research, analyze issues, prepare planning documents, and craft recommendations to support decision making. You will also interface with local, regional, and state agencies in developing and implementing these community-scale air quality plans.
 
Assembly Bill 617
Assembly Bill (AB) 617 (C. Garcia, Chapter 136, Statutes of 2017) was signed into law alongside Assembly Bill 398 which extended California’s cap-and-trade program for greenhouse gas emissions. AB 617 addresses environmental justice concerns regarding the extension of the cap-and-trade program by requiring the California Air Resources Board, with input from community groups, air districts and others, to select locations around the state to prepare community-led plans to reduce emissions of toxic air contaminants and criteria pollutants. Communities can also be selected to prepare community-led monitoring plans. The primary requirement for community selection is a demonstrated high cumulative exposure burden to air pollution and associated health disparities. In the Bay Area, and around the state, these communities are often low-income communities of color.
 
In 2017, West Oakland and Richmond were selected as the first communities to participate in the AB 617 program. Since then, East Oakland and Bayview Hunters Point/Southeast San Francisco communities have been added to the program. The Air District works closely with these communities to both develop and implement emission reduction and monitoring plans.
 
About You in the Position – Climate Protection Section (EPA CPRG Role)

The Bay Area Air Quality Management District is leading a regional effort to develop the first-ever Bay Area Regional Climate Action Plan. To be successful in this role, you must be a strong team player who is able to adapt to changing circumstances and priorities. You will make use of your knowledge of how local governments operate to address planning and policy issues. You will also draw on your experience or interest in addressing GHG mitigation by working with communities to identify local priorities, while at the same time syncing local goals with regional and statewide climate planning efforts. Your ability to review and assess policies and strategic approaches will support your work in developing potential GHG mitigation strategies and measures in a variety of economic sectors.

EPA Climate Pollution Reduction Grant
As part of the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022, the US EPA launched the Climate Pollution Reduction Grant (CPRG) program, providing $250 million nationwide to states and metropolitan regions to develop regional greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction plans, and $4.3 billion in nationally competitive grants to implement measures in those plans. The Air District has received $1 million from this EPA program to lead an eight-county climate action planning process. This planning effort identifies GHG mitigation measures across economic sectors to achieve aggressive GHG reduction goals and benefit frontline communities.

DEFINITION
Under direction, provides lead direction to environmental planning staff and conducts complex long-range planning for land use and environmental assessments; performs related work as assigned.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
This is the advanced lead level in the professional planning series. Incumbents provide lead direction to environmental planners and perform highly specialized and difficult planning functions. Incumbents are assigned to design and implement programs that require considerable professional knowledge and the use of independent judgement. This class is distinguished from Principal Environmental Planner in that the latter has responsibility for creating projects and new programs, and handling the most difficult, sensitive, novel or critical projects.

Examples of Duties for this Position

Analyzes issues, prepares reports and recommendations relative to land use, regional development and related issues; provides input into planned development's impact on air quality.
 
Confers with personnel from other divisions and agencies in coordinating assigned work; meets with community organizations and other groups to encourage cooperative action or resolve problems.
 
Upon assignment, provides lead direction, training and work review to professional environmental planners on routine, continuing or well-defined tasks; prioritizes and follows up on work to ensure timely completion.
 
Responds to inquiries from and represents the District with governmental officials, consultants, and the public related to environmental planning issues.
 
Upon request, provides input into selection decisions and performance evaluations.
 
Performs research on specified administrative and technical activities necessary to achieve environmental review and planning objectives.
 
Monitors and evaluates legislation and other governmental actions relating to air quality management planning; develops recommendations for District regulations, policies and programs.
 
Interfaces with local, state and federal agencies in development of regional development issues.
 
Leads and participates in preparation, review and editing of environmental impact assessment documents from other agencies; prepares District Lead Agency documents in accordance with relevant guidelines.
 
Participates in the preparation of non-attainment area plans related to assigned work.

Education & Experience

Equivalent to graduation from a college or university with graduate degree in regional, urban, or environmental planning or a closely related field and three years of professional environmental planning experience. Additional relevant experience may substitute for the graduate degree.

Definition

Distinguishing Characteristics
Environmental Planner I is the entry level class of this specialized professional planning series. Initially under close supervision, incumbents perform a wide range of professional planning duties while learning the more skilled and complex tasks associated with environmental planning and assessment. As experience is gained, duties become more diversified and are performed under more general supervision. This class is alternately staffed with Environmental Planner II and incumbents may advance to the higher level after gaining experience and demonstrating proficiency which meet the qualifications of the higher-level class.
 
Environmental Planner II is the journey level class in this specialized series, fully competent to perform a wide range of professional planning duties associated with air quality and environmental planning. This class is distinguished from Senior Environmental Planner in that the latter provides lead direction as well as performs more complex and specialized work requiring considerable professional knowledge and the use of significant independent judgment and may provide lead direction for defined tasks.

Represents the District at meetings with the public, other public agencies and consulting firms.

This Internship is offered as part of a Regional Internship Partnership to introduce and encourage new graduates to local municipal governments. The Town of Los Altos Hills has five rewarding, non-benefitted summer internships to begin June 10, 2024 through August 30, 2024.

Job Description: 

The intern’s workload will be a balance of assisting in daily municipal operations and special projects. Duties may include, but are not limited to proof reading, poster design, grassroots marketing, implementing events, organization of record management, benchmarking, photographing activities and research. The position will serve as a regular staff member and will receive assignments and work direction from the Community Services Supervisor. The primary goal of the internship program is to provide a college student or recent graduate an opportunity to apply their academic training in a municipal government setting. This paid internship provides hands-on experience in the daily operations of municipal government on all levels, thus enhancing the intern’s skills and résumé for a future profession in government.

• Current Undergraduate College Student or Bachelor’s degree in Community Services/Recreation or related fields
• Knowledge of principles and practices of organization and recreation

Position Summary

Under supervision of the Ironworker Superintendent, performs structural maintenance, repair and construction for the Golden Gate Bridge and other District facilities as required. Following plans and specifications, lays-out and fabricates a wide range of items.

Essential Responsibilities

• Performs maintenance, repair and construction for the Golden Gate Bridge and other District facilities including, but not limited to, the following: 
  1. Maintenance, repair, and replacement of steel components and fasteners. 
  2. Rigging for other crafts. 
  3. Installs and repairs of chain link and other fencing. 
  4. Shop fabrication of steel items and erection of structural and miscellaneous steel items. 
  5. Placement of reinforcing steel for concrete. 
  6. Maintenance of toll collection facilities and equipment. 
• Knows and follows the safety and health rules and safe working practices applicable to his or her job.
• Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with District employees, customers, vendors and all others contacted during the course of work using principles of excellent customer service.
• Performs additional related duties as assigned
• Regular and reliable attendance and performance is required

Minimum Qualifications

Education and/or Experience: Completion of Ironworker’s Apprenticeship. Four years’ Structural Ironworker experience required; welding and shop fabrication experience desirable. Additional qualifying experience may be substituted for completion of an Ironworker Apprenticeship Program; applicants substituting additional qualifying experience for an Ironworker Apprenticeship Program should attach a statement supporting the additional qualifying experience. 

Required License: Must possess and maintain a current, valid California driver's license and satisfactory driving record. No reckless driving and DUI infractions within the last 7 years. No more than 2 moving violations within the last 3 years. May operate District vehicles.

Physical Requirements:  Must be able to perform heavy manual labor. Work is performed outside in varying weather conditions. Must be able to stoop, bend, push, pull, and lift up to 50 pounds. Will be required to wear a respirator, or other personal protective equipment involving full body protection. Must be able to work comfortably at considerable heights from platforms, ladders, floats or suspended scaffolds; climb and walk on the Bridge cables; and climb ladders.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of:

• Occupational health and safety rules and working practices applicable to this position
• Methods, tools, equipment and procedures used in steel fabrication, and erection, maintenance and repair 
• Methods, equipment and procedures for installation and maintenance of rigging for access systems

THE POSITION:

The Facilities Carpenter I is an entry level classification in the carpentry series. Carpenters in this class are assigned routine skilled carpentry tasks. Under the training concept of growing excellence in craft, positions allocated to the Facilities Carpenter II level which become vacant may reasonably be filled at the I level. 
 

The Facilities Carpenter II is responsible for performing a variety of skilled carpentry and related tasks in the construction, remodeling, repair, and maintenance of City facilities. This the journey level classification within the carpenter series. Incumbents at this level act with independence, handle "master" craftworker projects, and assume the more complex activities which would otherwise require the attention and coordination of the Facilities and Building Manager. 

 

 

Essential Duties

What you will do: 

Depending on assignment, duties may include but are not limited to the following:  
 

1. Remodels offices in City facilities. Takes down walls, doors and windows, reinstalls new walls and cuts in new doorways.

2. Installs, repairs and replaces doors, door closures, windows, floors, roofs, and other structural appurtenances.

3. Builds and repairs wooden fixtures and office furniture of all kinds.

4. Fabricates new cabinets, bookshelves and countertops.

5. Performs maintenance and repair work on all city buildings, rental units, and on private residences involving Police damage to the premises.

6. Rescreens screen doors and window screens.

7. Fabricates tack boards and bulletin boards.

8. May perform allied craft work in the course of maintaining City facilities.

9. Performs related work as necessary.

• Tools, materials and standard practices of the carpentry trade.
• The qualities of various woods and related building materials and their suitability and use in specific situations.
• Federal, state, and county municipal building codes.
• Occupational Safety and Health Act safety requirements, and related devices and equipment.

• Skillfully use carpentry and related tools and equipment.
• Work from sketches, drawings, blueprints, plans, specifications and instruction manuals, and independently make necessary corrections.

Facilities Carpenter II
