THE POSITION

The Park Maintenance Worker I will work in the Parks Division within the Public Works Department, performing semi-skilled and skilled labor to: maintain turf, trees, shrubs, groundcover, top dressings, irrigation systems, playground equipment, park furnishings, restrooms, and sport field equipment; operate and understands basic maintenance procedures for various power turf equipment, including but not limited to mowers of various sizes, edger’s, blowers, chainsaws, and related equipment as required; perform a wide variety of skilled tasks involving the use of power equipment and hand tools in the areas of park and grounds maintenance, irrigation system installation, programming, and maintenance, tree/shrub trimming maintenance; perform the installation, maintenance and repair of various parks and grounds improvements, planting and trimming of trees/shrubs; understand fertilizer and herbicide products and application related to turf and ornamental plant care; and may performs other related duties as assigned.

The normal work schedule will be a 9/80 work schedule (9-hour days Monday-Thursday, 8-hour Friday with every other Friday off) from 6:00 am-3:30 pm. The ideal candidate should like working cooperatively to accomplish established work goals, have a willingness to learn and apply procedures and methods, and have an interest in providing the public with exceptional customer service. DOT is accepting applications for the position of full-time benefited Maintenance Assistant. Candidates who meet the minimum qualifications will be required to pass a written exam and a practical exam.
 
Under immediate supervision, the Maintenance Assistant performs unskilled work in the maintenance and repair of streets, pavements, sewers, landscaping, traffic signs, and traffic signals. Duties include digging holes, trenches, and ditches. It also includes operating a wide range of hand, mechanical, and power tools, as well as a variety of light and heavy vehicles, trucks, and equipment relevant to work performed, ensuring compliance with safe working practices.
 
Maintenance crews provide services seven days a week. Individuals in this classification may be required to work alternate work shifts, including grave and swing, weekends, holidays, overtime, and on-call.
