This Internship is offered as part of a Regional Internship Partnership to introduce and encourage new graduates to local municipal governments. The Town of Los Altos Hills hopes that internships like this will serve as a platform to connect a diverse student population with agencies that recognize their value and provide important opportunities for applicants to bring fresh ideas while gaining valuable hands-on experience in the public sector.

The Town of Los Altos Hills has five rewarding, non-benefitted summer internships to begin June 10, 2024 through August 30, 2024.

Job Description: 

The intern’s workload will be a balance of assisting in daily municipal operations and special projects. Duties may include, but are not limited to proof reading, poster design, grassroots marketing, implementing events, organization of record management, benchmarking, photographing activities and research. The position will serve as a regular staff member and will receive assignments and work direction from the Community Services Supervisor. The primary goal of the internship program is to provide a college student or recent graduate an opportunity to apply their academic training in a municipal government setting. This paid internship provides hands-on experience in the daily operations of municipal government on all levels, thus enhancing the intern’s skills and résumé for a future profession in government.

Qualifications:

• Current Undergraduate College Student or Bachelor’s degree in Community Services/Recreation or related fields
• Knowledge of principles and practices of organization and recreation
• Interest in local government
• Strong oral & written communication skills
• High level of computer skills
• Effective interpersonal skills as well as the ability to establish and maintain professional working relationships with supervisors, co-workers, and the public
• Applicable previous experience
• Self-motivated

TITLE: Facilities Technician
EMPLOYMENT TYPE: Non-Exempt (Full-Time)
DIVISION: Facilities Maintenance

PAY RANGE: $31.01 - $41.35 hourly per CBA ($64,500 - $86,008 estimated annual)
WORK SCHEDULE: Varies – days, nights, weekends, and holidays (per CBA)
WORK LOCATION: Varies – San Carlos, CA and/or South San Francisco, CA
JOB SUMMARY: The Facilities Technician reports to the Assistant Manager, Facilities and is responsible for providing building maintenance services at the District facilities in accordance with established standards and procedures.

EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
• Perform regularly scheduled maintenance on all facilities according to manufacturers’ specifications and Standard Operating Procedures.
• Perform basic facility repairs including painting, carpentry, plumbing, heating and cooling (HVAC), hydraulic and electrical systems.
• Complete daily work orders in a timely fashion in accordance with District standards.
• Respond to facility-related emergencies 24/7 during assigned periods in rotation.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:
• Perform scheduled maintenance, provide emergency response services and make repairs, and repair tools and equipment and monitor building maintenance contracts.
• Ensure all maintenance and repair activities are recorded, organized, and complete. Records must be readily available for reference, audit, and quality control.
• Collaborate with District departments to obtain work scope information, discuss options, collect job details and estimate labor and material costs relating to work order.
• Inspect and report on functional operation of buildings, grounds and related facility systems including: heating and cooling systems, fueling and lubrication systems, storm, plumbing, potable water, sewer and industrial waste systems, fire alarm and fire sprinkler systems, electrical power and lighting systems, in-ground hydraulic lift systems, bus parking designation markings, roofing systems, bus exhaust evacuation systems, roll up access doors and roll up fire doors, and environmental protection systems.
• Maintain clear and accurate records of maintenance tasks performed and status of District facilities.
• Develop and maintain a spare parts inventory of basic maintenance hand and power tools.
• Maintain open communications with other departments; develop and maintain effective internal relationships. Maintain a safe and clean work environment.
• Must participate in weekend and holiday on-call rotation.
• Safely operate a variety of maintenance vehicles.
• Perform all job duties and responsibilities in a safe manner to protect one’s self, fellow employees and the public from injury or harm. Promote safety awareness and follow safety procedures in an effort to reduce or eliminate accidents.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

SUPERVISION: Works under the general supervision of the Assistant Manager, Facilities, who establishes goals and objectives and evaluates performance.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Sufficient experience, training and/or education to demonstrate the knowledge and ability to successfully perform the essential functions of the position. In lieu of a degree, work-related experience that demonstrates the skills and experience necessary to perform this role will be accepted. Development of the required knowledge and abilities is typically obtained through but not limited to:
• High School Diploma or GED
• Three (3) years full-time industrial building/facility maintenance experience, or a combination of education and experience demonstrating the ability to successfully perform the essential functions of the position.
• Must have valid California driver’s license with a safe driving record.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
• General experience troubleshooting electrical systems, heating and cooling (HVAC) systems, plumbing, and hydraulic systems.
• Able to work safely in different kinds of weather conditions and workspace environments.
• Able to safely lift 50lbs and climb/work on ladders and other equipment.

SELECTION PROCESS MAY INCLUDE: The process will include a panel interview and may include written and skills test assessments or supplemental questions. ABOUT THE POSITION
The City of Gilroy is recruiting an undergraduate or graduate-level City Administration College Intern for the summer of 2024. This internship will provide a significant opportunity to gain experience and exposure and accumulate skills that are used daily in various city government programs that make substantial impacts to the community. These programs are in the areas of the City Clerks office, emergency management, economic development, public information and outreach, and other municipal administration programs and services.
 
The City Administration Intern will perform a variety of functions under the direction of the City Administrator and supervision of the Assistant to the City Administrator.

VOLUNTEER WORK SCHEDULE 
Internships can start as early as May 31, 2024 and end as late as September 30, 2024. 
 
This paid internship is offered at 15 - 25 hours per week with flexible scheduling. The selected Intern may request a schedule of their choice during standard work hours as described below. The office start and end date of the internship will be determined at the time of hire. Work hours are generally Monday – Friday between 8:00am – 5:00pm.

Overview:
The Senior Environmental, Health, and Safety Specialist’s primary role is to implement, administer, and maintain Valley Waters Workers’ Compensation program, including but not limited to third-party administration, OSH medical services, OSH insurance, modified work, and case management. This position will serve as the Program Lead for assigned EH&S programs, including Employee Training, Designated Employee Representative (DER) for Commercial Driver, Infection Control, Hearing Conservation, and Respiratory Protection. This position will support the Lockout-Tagout program by managing the lock and tag inventory and equipment needs; and the Facility Safety Audit program by performing audits.
 
Key Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

• Implement, administer, and maintain Valley Waters Workers’ Compensation program, including but not limited to third-party administration, OSH medical services, OSH insurance, modified work, return-to-work,  and overall case management.
• Serve as the Program Lead for assigned EH&S programs, including Employee Training, Designated Employee Representative (DER) for Commercial Driver, Infection Control, Hearing Conservation, and Respiratory Protection.
• Will support the Lockout-Tagout program by managing the lock and tag inventory and equipment needs; and the Facility Safety Audit program by performing audits.
• Manage the process of employee injuries, from initial reporting to coordinating medical treatment and facilitating return-to-work programs.
• Collaborate with departmental managers and stakeholders to identify safety hazards and develop strategies to mitigate risks.
• Conduct regular inspections and audits of workplace environments to ensure compliance with safety standards and regulations.
• Investigate workplace incidents, accidents, or near-misses, and develop recommendations for preventive measures.
• Provide guidance and support to employees and management on environmental, health, and safety matters, promoting a culture of safety awareness and compliance.

Ideal Experience:

• Minimum of 5 years of experience in a similar role, preferably in a large organization or industrial setting.
• Proven track record of implementing and administering Workers' Compensation programs, including managing injury cases and facilitating return-to-work programs.
• Experience in developing and delivering safety training programs, with a focus on engaging and educating diverse employee populations.
• Strong background in conducting safety inspections, risk assessments, and incident investigations.
• Experience in collaborating with regulatory agencies and external stakeholders on environmental, health, and safety initiatives.

• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively interact with employees at all levels of the organization.
• Strong leadership and decision-making abilities, with a proactive approach to problem-solving and risk management.

• Gather and analyze information regarding accidents, reconstruct accidents, determine relevant issues, and causes, recommend preventative measures. 
• Research, evaluate, and recommend policies and programs to comply with state laws and regulations, and effectively minimize Valley Water risk.

Ideal Knowledge:

• Comprehensive knowledge of Workers' Compensation laws, regulations, and best practices. Applicable federal and state laws, including the labor code relating to federal and state OSHA regulations, federal DOT regulations, and federal, state, and local environmental, codes, and regulations.
• Understanding of injury management principles, including medical treatment protocols and return-to-work strategies.
• Familiarity with safety training methodologies, adult learning principles, and instructional design techniques.
• Knowledge of hazard identification and risk assessment methodologies, with the ability to apply them in diverse workplace settings.
• Understanding of emergency response planning and crisis management principles.
• Awareness of emerging trends and technologies in environmental, health, and safety management.

Ideal Training and Education:
Equivalent to a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in industrial safety, construction technology, environmental sciences, engineering, physics, chemistry, or a related field.  

Substitution:
Directly related experience may be substituted on the basis of one and one-half years of experience for the one year of education.
