The City of Thousand Oaks is seeking highly motivated and results-oriented Utilities Maintenance Worker I/II/Trainees for the Water and Wastewater divisions of the Public Works Department.  Applications are currently being accepted to fill two positions at the Municipal Service Center in the Newbury Park area of Thousand Oaks (one each in Water and Wastewater). Dependent upon the candidate's qualifications, the vacancies will be filled at either the Utilities Maintenance Worker Level I, Level II or Trainee.

Primary responsibilities:

• Perform a variety of construction, maintenance, and repair duties as it relates to the water and wastewater divisions
• Perform light and heavy manual labor
• Inspect and perform maintenance on various pump and lift stations
• Operate a variety of maintenance and construction equipment

This Internship is offered as part of a Regional Internship Partnership to introduce and encourage new graduates to local municipal governments. The Town of Los Altos Hills hopes that internships like this will serve as a platform to connect a diverse student population with agencies that recognize their value and provide important opportunities for applicants to bring fresh ideas while gaining valuable hands-on experience in the public sector.

The Town of Los Altos Hills has five rewarding, non-benefitted summer internships to begin June 10, 2024 through August 30, 2024.

Job Description: 

The intern’s workload will be a balance of assisting in daily municipal operations and special projects. Duties may include, but are not limited to proof reading, poster design, grassroots marketing, implementing events, organization of record management, benchmarking, photographing activities and research. The position will serve as a regular staff member and will receive assignments and work direction from the Community Services Supervisor. The primary goal of the internship program is to provide a college student or recent graduate an opportunity to apply their academic training in a municipal government setting. This paid internship provides hands-on experience in the daily operations of municipal government on all levels, thus enhancing the intern’s skills and résumé for a future profession in government.

Qualifications:

• Current Undergraduate College Student or Bachelor’s degree in Community Services/Recreation or related fields
• Knowledge of principles and practices of organization and recreation
• Interest in local government
• Strong oral & written communication skills
• High level of computer skills
• Effective interpersonal skills as well as the ability to establish and maintain professional working relationships with supervisors, co-workers, and the public
• Applicable previous experience
• Self-motivated

The Position:
Community Service Officer I
The Community Service Officer I is an entry-level position assigned to the Field Operations Division of the Police Department. The successful incumbent will provide support to sworn Police Officers and departmental operations.
 
Community Service Officer II
The Community Service Officer II is a journey level position which provides a broader range of responsibility and requires a higher level of experience and training. The successful incumbent will provide support to sworn Police Officers and departmental operations and has the ability to work independently and exercise judgment and initiative.

The annual salary range for Community Service Officer I is $81,316.32 - $104,154.48. The annual salary range for Community Service Officer II is $92,026.68 - $117,321.24. This position will be filled at or near the minimum of the salary range.

Minimum Qualifications:

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
 
Community Service Officer I
Minimum Requirements
• Graduation from high school or possession of a GED; and
 • One (1) year of full-time paid or volunteer work experience involving considerable contact with the general public
 
Desirable Qualifications
• Paid or volunteer work experience within a law enforcement agency, the U.S. Armed Forces, or a related agency
 

 Community Service Officer II 
Minimum Requirements
• Graduation from high school or possession of a GED; and
 • Three (3) years of full-time paid or volunteer work experience involving considerable contact with the general public
 
Desirable Qualifications
• One (1) year of the required three (3) years of experience within a law enforcement agency, the U.S. Armed Forces, or a related agency.
 

Acceptable Substitution: 
None.
 
License/Certifications: 
Possession of a valid California Class C driver's license is required at time of appointment and for the duration of employment.
 
Other Requirements:  
• Applicants will be required to pass a City background investigation, which will include fingerprinting and polygraph and psychological screening
 • Will be required to have successfully completed polygraph screening prior to assignment to the Property and Evidence Room
 • Will be required to pass state and county mandated tests, which may include Criminal Justice Information Control/2 and Department of Justice/National Crime Information Center
 • May be required to work unusual hours, alternate schedules, or shifts
 • May be considered to be on-call for emergency response at all times while on duty, including during lunch and break periods
 • Must be able to perform all of the essential functions of the job assignment

Community Service Officer I
VETERAN’S PREFERENCE POINTS: This position qualifies for Veteran’s Preference Points.  Applicants who have separated from service (Active Duty Status) must submit proof of honorable discharge (Form DD214) with their application at time of filing or will be ineligible to have points added to their final score.
 
Community Service Officer II
PERMANENT CITY EMPLOYEES PREFERENCE POINTS: Current permanent employee candidates who receive a passing score on the examination will have an additional five (5) points added to their final score.
