This Internship is offered as part of a Regional Internship Partnership to introduce and encourage new graduates to local municipal governments. The Town of Los Altos Hills hopes that internships like this will serve as a platform to connect a diverse student population with agencies that recognize their value and provide important opportunities for applicants to bring fresh ideas while gaining valuable hands-on experience in the public sector.

Job Description: 

The intern’s workload will be a balance of assisting in daily municipal operations and special projects. Duties may include, but are not limited to proof reading, poster design, grassroots marketing, implementing events, organization of record management, benchmarking, photographing activities and research. The position will serve as a regular staff member and will receive assignments and work direction from the Community Services Supervisor. The primary goal of the internship program is to provide a college student or recent graduate an opportunity to apply their academic training in a municipal government setting. This paid internship provides hands-on experience in the daily operations of municipal government on all levels, thus enhancing the intern’s skills and résumé for a future profession in government.

• Current Undergraduate College Student or Bachelor’s degree in Community Services/Recreation or related fields
• Knowledge of principles and practices of organization and recreation

THE DEPARTMENT

The Parks and Recreation Department is the third largest department in the City and is organized by program area, with each program administered by a supervisor, coordinator, or specialist. The Parks and Recreation Department is composed of a Director and 22 full-time management positions. The department is comprised of the Recreation, Parks, and Building Maintenance divisions. The Parks and Recreation Department mission is to provide opportunities for physical, cultural and social well being; protect and enhance the physical environment; and ensure the effective and efficient use of public facilities and open space.

The Building Maintenance Division maintains 32 facilities totaling more than 563,000 square feet and over 275 acres of park land. Position Details

Under close supervision, maintain constant watch over a public swimming pool facility to enforce regulations and prevent accident, assist swimmers in distress and provide emergency and routine first aid. Create a safe and positive atmosphere for all participants and perform basic facility maintenance duties.

There is potential for slip hazards when working near water and exposure to blood borne pathogens when rendering first aid. Working hours will include evenings, weekends, and holidays.

Under the direction of the Custodial Supervisor, the Casual Maintenance Custodian Assistant serves as the worker in the duties of care and cleaning of assigned buildings and related facilities.  The incumbent may be required to travel between several City buildings during their scheduled shift.  This recruitment is to fill a position that has been designated to cover a night shift from 5 p.m. to 1:30 a.m., including weekends.  This recruitment may also be used to fill similar casual positions throughout the City;  shifts and schedules may vary and may include daytime shifts as needed. 

This is a non-benefited casual position.  A casual employee may not work more than 1000 hours per fiscal year.
