THE POSITION:

The Public Works Department plays a significant role in transitioning the City to a vibrant mixed-use City, by leading the effort to design, construct and maintain the City’s infrastructure. The Department consists of the Maintenance and Engineering Divisions.  The City of East Palo Alto is seeking a highly organized, hands-on, decisive and innovative Engineer with excellent interpersonal skills to fill the position of Senior Engineer.

Under direction of the Public Works Director/City Engineer, the incumbent manages the construction of multiple Capital Improvement Projects; Performs project development for Capital Improvement Projects including preparing plans and specifications and assembling bid documents on a variety of public works infrastructure projects; Prepares written reports for City Council meeting agendas. Supervises and participates in the conduct of complicated engineering, planning, design, and review activities; and to exercise lead supervision over others as assigned.  The work assigned may involve development review, public works, traffic, building construction, drainage water and sewer projects; and to do related work as required.

Under general supervision, an Assistant Engineer/Assistant Civil Engineer performs a variety of professional field and office engineering work in connection with the Design, Development, Transportation, and Construction Sections of the Engineering Division, and other related engineering projects; and performs other duties as assigned.  The Assistant Engineer/Assistant Civil Engineer is the journey level classification in the series. Incumbents perform a variety of professional level engineering work requiring independent judgment.

The incumbent will work on encroachment permits, capital improvement projects (primarily building, utility, and creek projects), and development projects.  The position may be filled at either level depending on the candidate’s possession of EIT Certificate or profession registration.

Under direction, the Associate Civil Engineer is responsible for overseeing and performing a variety of complex professional field and office engineering work in connection with the Design, Development, Special Projects, Transportation and Construction Sections of the Engineering Division and other related engineering projects; may serve as project leader with supervisory responsibility; and performs other duties as assigned.

An Associate Civil Engineer oversees consultants and may supervise assistant or junior professional staff, technical staff, and/or lead a design team or an engineering unit.  The incumbent will work on capital improvement projects (primarily building, utility, and creek projects) and development projects.

City of Lafayette – Associate Civil Engineer

Full Time / Exempt

$91,178 - $119,934 per year

The City of Lafayette (pop. 24,000) is recruiting for the position of an Associate Engineer. The position encompasses various professional field and office engineering work related to the management and administration of the City’s Capital Improvement Program (CIP), land development, traffic engineering, and public works infrastructure construction and maintenance projects.  The position will require a hands-on approach to project management with the engineer performing their own construction inspection.  Since construction inspection is a large component of this position, candidates must be comfortable working outdoors year-round and being adjacent to vehicle traffic, heavy equipment, open trenches and general public works construction activities. The position provides professional staff assistance to other engineers, departments, and the public in areas of expertise.  This is a challenging job in a great city!  The new Engineer will be joining a staff of dedicated, energetic and fun professionals.

As part of the Engineering Services Department the Associate Engineer performs the following major duties:

• Plans, designs, and inspects civil engineering construction projects.
• Reviews construction plans to verify compliance with City, State, Federal, and/or industry standards and requirements for public works infrastructure. 
• Reviews engineering calculations and participates in pre-design, construction, and utility coordination meetings.
• Provides construction administration, public relations, management, surveying, and inspection of construction projects.
• Reviews and inspects work to preserve public safety and ensure conformance with plans and specifications.
• Assists in processing encroachment permits and inspections.
• Participates in Clean Water programs and preparation of required reports.
• Performs field investigations of problems affecting property owners, contractors, and maintenance operations and responds to citizen inquiries and complaints.
• Prepares staff reports to Council and Commissions and participates in public meetings.

In addition to familiarity with civil engineering principles, procedures, methods, materials and techniques used in public works projects, qualified candidates should have the ability to communicate effectively with the public and contractors.  Experience with Microsoft Office programs is required. GIS and CAD software experience is highly desirable. An equivalent to graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major coursework in civil engineering is required  The Associate level position requires five years of professional engineering experience and Registration as a Civil Engineer issued by the California State Board of Registration for Civil Engineering.

 DEFINITION

Under supervision, performs sub-professional engineering office work related to Public Works improvements; elementary field surveying; computer-aided drafting and design work; and related work as required.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Performs a wide variety of responsible sub-professional engineering work; computes and posts simple engineering data; computer-aided drafting, design, and mapping; revises, reviews, files, and updates engineering plans and maps; assists field survey and traffic survey crews as needed.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of: The elementary principles of algebra, geometry, and trigonometry; drafting symbols used in construction work; basic engineering office equipment; modern personal computers and related computer software; principles and practical application of computer-aided drafting, design, and mapping systems.

Ability to: Learn the use of surveying equipment and techniques; learn basic construction inspection procedures; accurately make and verify mathematical computations; perform neat and accurate drafting; collect engineering field data, and make field notes; maintain accurate records; effectively operate computer-aided drafting, design and mapping software; effectively use modern office software; understand and carry out oral and written instructions; work flexible hours; deal effectively and courteously with the public and general contractors; attend work and perform duties as assigned.

Education: Completion of 45 semester college units with major in civil engineering or related course of study.

The Marin Municipal Water District is recruiting for an Operations Director to serve as a senior leader fostering innovation through effective leadership, administrative oversight and policy direction, with a strong focus on regulatory compliance, for the various units within the newly established Operations Department. Under the direction of the General Manager, provides targeted focus on the operational business side of the organization. The Operations Department is comprised of staff engaged in the operations, maintenance and delivery of safe and potable water through water supply, treatment, storage, distribution, maintenance and water quality activities including backflow prevention, laboratory services and regulatory compliance. 

The ideal candidate will be a seasoned professional with a strong background in water utility operations and a proven ability to resolve largescale complex problems, foster continuous improvement to advance organizations by staying abreast of and applying industry best practices and effectively leading teams of professionals providing critical services to the community in a highly regulated environment. 

The District: The District is a medium-sized, municipal, water agency with a Board of Directors/General Manager form of government, 240 full-time employees and a $112,000,000 combined annual operating and capital budget for FY 2019.  Annually, the District delivers water to 190,000 residents and businesses in the central and southern portions of Marin County and has stewardship responsibilities for 21,000 acres of pristine watershed lands on Mt. Tamalpais.  

Incumbents will work a flexible schedule, with increased scheduling during peak workload periods, but less than 1,000 hours during the assignment through the fiscal year starting July 1st and ending June 30th.

JOB SUMMARY

Under direction this position provides pool supervision, performs rescues, and enforces safety rules and related duties as required. The Lifeguard is a part-time hourly position. This class receives assignments from and reports to the Supervisory Team; must be available to work evenings, weekends and holidays. Staff meetings are mandatory and held on Fridays at 10:00 am.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES

• Administers first aid.
• Enforces pool regulations and policies.
• Assists in the maintenance of operational equipment.
• Maintains the pool area, deck and locker room for cleanliness and safety.
• Prevents accidents.
• Performs rescues.
• Provides customer service as needed.
• Must be available to work evenings, weekends and holidays.
