THE POSITION 

Under immediate supervision (Parks Maintenance Worker I) or general supervision (Parks Maintenance Worker II), performs semi-skilled to skilled maintenance, repair, and construction work assigned to the parks division; operates maintenance and construction tools and equipment; performs a variety of maintenance tasks relative to assigned area of responsibility.

Distinguishing Characteristics

Parks Maintenance Worker I: This is the entry level class in the Maintenance Worker series. This class is distinguished from the Maintenance Worker II by the performance of the more routine tasks and duties assigned to workers in this series. Employees at this level are not expected to perform with the same independence of direction and judgment on matters related to established procedures and guidelines as are positions allocated to the II level. Since this class is typically used as a training class, employees may have only limited or non directly related work experience. Employees work under immediate supervision while learning job tasks.

Parks Maintenance Worker II: This is the full journey level class within the Maintenance Worker series. This class is distinguished from the Maintenance Worker I by the assignment of the full range of duties assigned. Employees at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise, and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies within the work unit. Positions in this class are flexibly staffed and are normally filled by advancement from the I level.

Representative Duties

The following duties are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices.

1. Handle complaints and answer questions from the public.
2. Perform general electrical, painting, plumbing and carpentry work as needed.
3. Make minor adjustments on service equipment; maintain tools and equipment in working order.
4. Oversee the work of community service workers.
5. Maintain logs of daily activities.
6. Assist in other areas as needed.
7. Perform related duties as required.
8. Inspect park grounds, structures, medians and related facilities for safety, appearance, and vandalism; remove graffiti from park surfaces.
9. Clean and clear park grounds, facilities, structures and playing fields of debris and potentially dangerous conditions; set up park for special events.
10. Plant, mow, prune, and maintain turf, trees, shrubs, and plants; clear sites of weeds.
11. Perform a wide variety of semi-skilled tasks in the construction and repair of park and community facilities.
12. Install, maintain, repair, and program irrigation systems.
13. Operate grounds maintenance equipment as well as a variety of hand and power tools.
14. Apply pesticide, herbicide, and other pest management treatments.

QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of:

Principles and practices of maintenance and repair activities related to area of assignment.

Common tools, materials, and motorized vehicles and equipment used in assigned area of responsibility.

Parks Maintenance Worker I

Education/Training:

Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade.

Experience:

One year of experience in construction or maintenance work is desirable.

License or Certificate:

Possession of a California Class C Driver License.

Possession of a valid forklift certificate within one year of employment.

 

Parks Maintenance Worker II

Education and Experience Guidelines - Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Education/Training:

Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade.

Experience:

Two years of experience in area of assignment equivalent to the Maintenance Worker I in the City of Ceres.

License or Certificate:

Possession of a California Class C Driver License.

EXAMINATION PROCESS   Those who meet the employment qualifications and whose strengths and background most closely match the needs of the position will be contacted through the CalOpps email system and invited to an Interview Panel test.  Candidates who achieve a passing score on the Interview Panel will be certified on an Employment List, from which the top 3 scoring candidates will be referred to the hiring department for a final selection interview.

The BeautifySJ Program is a blight reduction, community and neighborhood beautification, and encampment management program within the Community Services Division of the Parks, Recreation, and Neighborhood Services Department. BeautifySJ Programs include, the Graffiti Removal Program, Illegal Dumping Program, Neighborhood Dumpster Day Program, Neighborhood Litter Program, Recreational Vehicle Pollution Prevention Program, Encampment Trash removal Program, Clean Gateways and Cash for Trash Program.

The Parks, Recreation and Neighborhood Services Department is currently seeking to fill two temporary (Overstrength) full-time Community Activity Specialist vacancy in the BeautifySJ Prorgram. The position is currently funded through June 30, 2026. These two (2) Community Activity Specialist who will support the Encampment Management Team with the implementation of the no return/no encampment zone for encampments. In addition to this assignment, these two positions will assist the encampment abatement teams with weekly abatement activities including noticing encampments, referrals to partner departments for outreach, providing education on encampment setback areas. The position daily engagement with those residing in homeless encampments. Those selected for the positions can expect to work in-person, 40 hours per week with a typical in-person schedule of Monday-Friday.

Applicants can also expect at times to work on activities and events and may include evening and weekend work.

The duties of this position will consist of:
 

• Posting encampment abatement notices at encampments
• Engaging with those who reside in homeless encampments to educate them on the "no return zone" and other encampment setbacks
• Working in and near homeless encampment locations
• Pilot and document best practices for a no-encampment zones
• Coordinate with city officials, other City Departments, law enforcement, and service providers to ensure a unified approach to clearing and managing encampments
• Coordinating resources and scheduling workload for efforts including but not limited to Secondary Employment Unit (SEU) requests and scheduling through SJPD outreach service requests to the Housing Department, etc.
• Process reports and data tracking through the Survey123 system

The City of Burlingame's Park's & Recreation Department is accepting applications for the position of Tree Worker

 

DEFINITION

To perform a variety of skilled work involving the trimming, removal, installation, and general maintenance of trees; to operate and maintain all tree maintenance equipment; and to perform related work as required.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

This is the journey level class in the Tree Maintenance class series. Positions in this class perform duties requiring greater skill and experience. All positions assigned to the class require the ability to exercise judgment and initiative, and to direct the activities of lower-level staff in tree maintenance operations.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

Receives general supervision from the Parks Supervisor. Lead supervision is also provided by the Tree Lead Worker.

Exercises technical or functional supervision over lower level and less experienced personnel.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (include but are not limited to the following)

·      Climbs trees using ladders and climbing equipment or works from bucket of an aerial lift truck boom to perform tree maintenance tasks, pruning, limb removal, or line clearing.

·       Establishes safe work zones and adheres to safe work practices including the use of personal protective equipment.

·       Directs the work of the immediate support crew in a safe and effective manner.

·       Operates all types of tree maintenance equipment such as aerial lift trucks, chainsaws, brush chippers, sprayers, stump grinders, or other tools and equipment.

·       Keeps records of work performed, including damage to property.

·       Assists in the training and supervision of lower-level staff.

·       Maintains tree maintenance equipment.

·       Responds to inquiries from the general public regarding tree maintenance work and explains City tree policies.

·       Confers with Tree Lead Worker to plan, review work projects, and make suggestions to better implement the work program.

·       Performs the duties of the Tree Lead Worker in his/her absence.

·       Responds to emergency calls outside of normal work hours as required.

KNOWLEDGE/ABILITIES/SKILLS: (The following are representative sample of the KAS’s necessary to perform essential duties of the position)

Knowledge of: Materials, equipment and methods used in care, trimming and removal of trees; tree planting, and maintenance methods; pruning standards of the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA). Principles of training. Safety measures relating to the pruning, removal and general maintenance of trees in populated areas.

Ability to: Direct activities of immediate subordinates; perform manual labor; monitor supplies and materials; analyze situations and adopt effective courses of action; set up safe work sites in traffic, learn the geography of the city; work cooperatively with other City crews; establish and sustain work routines. Perform aerial rescues. Perform high climbing and pruning work in City trees. Pass annual training and perform First Aid and CPR.

Skills: Ability to safely and efficiently operate aerial lifts, brush chippers, tractors and implements, spray rigs, front end loader, blower, chain saws, stumpers and cutters, gas pole saw, hydraulic tools, shop tools, limb lowering devices. Rig trees for safe and efficient high climbing.

QUALIFICATIONS: (The following are minimal qualifications necessary for entry into the classification.)

Education and/or Experience: Sufficient education and experience to perform the above duties efficiently. Typically, this is obtained through achievement of Certified Tree Worker status, and equivalent to the completion of twelfth grade supplemented by specialized training in tree care work.

License/Certificates: Possession of valid 'Class C' California Motor Vehicle Operators License; Certified Tree Worker Certificate (ISA) and Certified Line Clearance certificate within one year of appointment; and First aid and CPR certificate within one year of appointment.

PHYSICAL, MENTAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL WORKING CONDITIONS:

The County of Yuba is currently recruiting for the position of Public Health Nurse Intern/Public Health Nurse in the Health and Human Services Department. The Construction Services Manager will directly perform a variety of new construction, skilled building and grounds repair and restoration work, supervises construction crews of staff, and manages the work of licensed contractors. The Construction Services Manager is responsible for the management and completion of repair and improvement projects at a variety of park facilities and locations.

This is skills-based physical labor work, in all weather conditions, for a person at an intermediate level. The work performed will support MRCA’s operation of nature parks within greater Los Angeles and other MRCA efforts related to public access, open space conservation, habitat restoration, and urban park development.

Supervision

The position reports to the Division Chief. Assorted tasks may be supervised by the Deputy Executive Officer. The position supervises 6-12 other staff.  

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

• Schedule and prioritize construction projects.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS

Physical Demands

Supervision

Required Hours and Location

Monday through Friday, 8 hours per day, 40 hours per week with some scheduling flexibility. Occasional overtime work on evenings or weekends upon prior approval by supervisor. The position will work out of the Los Angeles River Center and Gardens but may be required to travel to various other locations. Offices at the River Center are spread among multiple buildings and floors. 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience

• High school diploma or GED certificate. A.A. degree preferred.
• Two (2) years performing administrative duties.
• Experience in construction field preferred.   

Training and Certification

• Must have a valid California driver’s license in good standing with a satisfactory driving record at the time of hire.
• Basic First Aid and CPR certification (or ability to complete within 6 months).

Knowledge of: 

• Proficiency in Windows-based programs including word processing, spreadsheets, and databases.
• Proficiency in grammar, spelling and basic mathematics. 
• Knowledge of operating standard office equipment. 
• Office practices and procedures.
• Bilingual skills in English and another locally common language, such as Spanish, is desired.

The Position

The City of Fremont currently has a vacancy for the position of Park Maintenance Worker I. The Park Maintenance Worker I performs routine maintenance and repair work in the care of parks, recreation areas and equipment. The selected candidate will be part of a work crew assigned to a daily work detail.

This recruitment will establish a pool of candidates to fill regular and temporary vacancies.

Examples of Job Duties

All Assignments

• Responsible for vehicle and pedestrian traffic safety in work area.
• Manually transports heavy objects, supplies and materials.
• Operate ground maintenance equipment including a backhoe and tractor attachments, as well as a variety of hand and power tools.

Trees Assignment

• Prunes and trims designated street trees to shape and improve growth.
• Operates an aerial pruning platform, brush chipper, chain saw, stump grinder, leaf blower, and pole saw.
• Drives a one-ton truck to locations where work is to be performed.
• Clears areas of leaves, using rake or blower, and remove debris.

Central Parks and Sport Complex Assignment

• Maintains lawns, trees, shrubs, ground cover, picnic tables, benches, and sprinkler systems.
• Irrigates, cultivates, prunes, plants, and transplants a variety of turf, shrubs, trees and plants.

Outlying Parks Assignment

• Maintains lawns, trees, shrubs, ground cover, picnic tables, benches, and sprinkler systems.
• Maintains and make minor repairs to playground/picnic equipment, picnic areas and athletic fields.
• Operates mowing equipment in parks and athletic fields.

Special Assignments

• Performs general painting, plumbing and carpentry.
• Maintains, repairs and renovates irrigation system controllers, valves, pipes, and related components.
