Per Diem Library Assistant I (Circulation Services)

THE POSITION: The San Mateo Public Library is seeking energetic individuals to provide a wide variety of library support work. Duties include but are not limited to the following: Assisting at the Accounts Desk; checking out and checking in of library materials; registering patrons for library cards; financial transactions at the Accounts Desk; promoting library services and providing consistent, excellent customer service. This recruitment is for two 19-hour Per Diem Library Assistant I positions that support Circulation services at each of the three San Mateo Public Library locations. An eligibility list will be created for future openings in this classification.  This recruitment will also be used to fill several on-call Library Assistant positions*.

SALARY AND HOURS:  $27.11 per hour (Step 1). Below are the starting schedules for the Per Diem Library Assistant I positions that may be changed in the future to meet the operational needs of the Library. These positions are currently scheduled at all three San Mateo Public Library locations, Main, Marina, and Hillsdale branches.  Availability at all three San Mateo Public Library branches is required.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED: Education equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade, supplemented by clerical and specialized college level courses in library science; or, one year of experience performing general clerical or related work in a public library system; bilingual skills desirable but not required; strong customer service skills are required.

ABILITY TO: Work with a minimum of supervision, follow written and oral instructions; work cooperatively in a team environment.

ADA SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: Perform physical tasks such as lifting and moving library materials; push, lift, and/or pull 40 pounds; sit; stand; walk; kneel; stoop; squat; reach; twist; exposure to chemicals and dust.

The Assistant Civil Engineer is an entry-level class in the Civil Engineer series. This class is distinguished from the Associate Civil Engineer by the performance of the more routine tasks and duties assigned to positions within the Civil Engineer series. Incumbents perform less complex office and field engineering work and assignments are generally routine or closely related within a framework of established procedures. Since this class is typically used as a training class, employees may have applicable education but only limited related work experience. The Assistant Civil Engineer receives general supervision from higher level professional engineers and may exercise technical or functional supervision over technical engineering staff. The Assistant Civil Engineer position does not require registration as a civil engineer or professional engineer. 

The Associate Civil Engineer performs a variety of complex engineering work for design, investigation, and management of public works projects and oversight of private development and permitted construction, prepares a variety of engineering documents, drawings and specifications, to act as project manager in assigned capital projects; and to perform a variety of professional public works and engineering tasks relative to assigned area of responsibility.  

This is the full journey level class within the professional Civil Engineer series. Employees within this class are distinguished from the Assistant Civil Engineer by the performance of the full range of duties as assigned, including by the greater complexity of the assignments received and by the greater independence with which an incumbent is expected to operate. Incumbents are expected to complete complex engineering assignments requiring the use of judgment and initiative in developing solutions to problems, interpreting general policies, and determining work assignments. Employees at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work unit. What You’ll Do

The Assistant to the City Clerk position serves as the welcoming and friendly face of government for both the City Council and the City Clerk’s office as this position is the first contact for the front counter and the primary receptionist. The position requires an ability to help demystify government services and processes, learn and maintain an understanding of all government services and procedures and help citizens get to the right service. The position’s administrative functions include responsibility for records management including filing and scanning; managing off-site records inventory; managing and ordering office supply inventory; writing correspondence, creating certificates of commendation and writing proclamations on behalf of the Mayor. This position is also charged with maintaining multiple calendars, processing reservations and invoices and acting as primary administrative support for Council and the City Clerk. Excellent attention to detail, writing and proofreading skills are required and a positive upbeat attitude with the ability to be flexible, resilient, and creative when situations change is essential. The successful candidate will have a strong work ethic, a passion for making a difference and helping citizens, and a desire to grow in this field.

Some of the duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Attend meetings as required, may prepare meeting minutes, may assist in City Council agenda preparation and follow-up, as needed; manage Council reservations, correspondence and calendars

The Bay Area Air Quality Management District (District) is a regional government agency. The District's statutory mandate is to regulate stationary sources of air emissions. The District accomplishes this goal through regulation of industrial facilities and conducts various outreach and incentive programs designed to encourage clean air choices.
 
The Air District's jurisdiction encompasses all of seven counties - Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara and Napa, and portions of two others - southwestern Solano and southern Sonoma.

About the Position
The Director of Rules and Strategic Policy leads the development of new and modified regulations to be presented to the Board of Directors for consideration. Equivalent to graduation from a four year college or university with major coursework in engineering or a closely related field and five years of professional level work experience in developing or implementing air quality regulations, preferably in a public agency, including three years of supervisory experience.

Experience developing air quality regulations, especially for stationary sources.
 
Experience working in partnership with community advocates to address environmental injustice.
