DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

This entry-level classification in the Program Leader series is responsible for providing child development services in Youth Services programs. Incumbents at this level are not expected to function with the same amount of knowledge or skill level as positions allocated to the Senior Program Leader level, and usually exercise less independent discretion and judgment in matters related to work procedures and methods. Work is usually supervised while in progress and fits an established structure or pattern. Exceptions or changes in procedures are explained in detail as they arise. As experience is gained, assignments become more varied and are performed with greater independence.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Provides support duties for child development services in Youth Services programs; assists children in activities; prepares and serves snacks based on established guidelines; performs clean-up and food storage duties.

Education and Experience:

•  High School Diploma or GED, or currently enrolled in child development Regional Occupational Program (ROP).
•  Experience working with children in a childcare or educational setting is desirable.

Knowledge of:

• Child development services, operations, and activities.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Must possess: mobility to perform medium physical work; vision to read printed materials and a computer screen; hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone or radio. The classification supports indoor and outdoor programs requiring frequent walking, running, conducting exercises, and related physical activities. Finger dexterity is needed to access, enter, and retrieve data using a computer keyboard, calculator, or tools and equipment used in assigned program area. Program activities may require sitting, standing, walking on level and slippery surfaces, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, stooping, squatting, crouching, grasping, and making repetitive hand movement in the performance of daily duties; the ability to lift, carry, and push tools, equipment, and supplies weighing up to 40 pounds or heavier weights with assistance and/or the use of proper equipment.

ENVIRONMENTAL ELEMENTS

Incumbents work in both indoor and outdoor environments with moderate to loud noise levels. May work in controlled temperature conditions, cold and hot temperatures, or inclement weather conditions. TEMPORARY POTTERY INSTRUCTOR

Recreation Services Division is seeking self-motivated, energetic, responsible individuals interested in employment as a pottery instructor for adults. Under general supervision of the Recreation Services Coordinator, pottery instructors are responsible for teaching pottery techniques through lecture and demonstrations.  Classes are run year-round and meet once a week for 3 hours. Class sessions are six weeks long and include a week break for cleaning and restocking after two consecutive class sessions (every 12 weeks).

• Teach pottery/ceramic classes by leading and demonstrating techniques associated with the subject matter
• Maintain a safe, friendly and inclusive class environment for all participants
• Adjust class as appropriate and as needed to meet the various skill levels of participants
• Develop curriculum for each class meeting
• Knowledge of glazing and firing techniques

THE POSITION

JOB DESCRIPTION

The Tiny Tots Instructor will teach assigned classes of pre-school children ranging in ages from 18 months to 5 years old in enrichment, recreational and educational based programming (Tiny Tots Aide will assist).

The Senior Educational Facilities Planner (Sr. Planner) provides professional planning services that guide the physical development of the campus and assists in strategic development and improvement of buildings and space to support UCSC's mission of research, teaching, and public service. As a senior member of the unit, the Sr. Planner is the resident expert on campus and UC policy regarding capital matters, and provides assistance and support in all areas of planning for CPSM staff, campus leadership. They also act as liaison to the Office of Capital Planning at the UC Office of the President.

The Sr. Planner uses skills as a seasoned, experienced planning professional with a full understanding of industry practices and procedures to resolve a wide range of planning issues; uses advanced planning concepts and objectives to resolve highly complex issues; develops short and long range capital plans, demonstrates good judgment in selecting methods and techniques for analyzing alternatives and recommending solutions; exhibits high levels of organization; recommends revisions to proceedures and policies to improve efficiency, and is able to operate with considerable independence.

The Sr. Planner provides high-level reports and analysis of campus space needs in an effort to ensure the efficient use of campus space; works with campus leadership and clients to provide in-depth programming, utilization and visioning studies for all types of campus space using a variety of planning tools: metrics, conceptual space plans, and test fit diagrams; coordinates with campus technical experts on the re-use of space; generates and manipulates large data sets, manages databases to comprehensively manage campus capital expenditures, leads and coordinates the annual updates to the multi-year Capital and Seismic Financial Plans, and generates analytics for capital planning, space management and capital outlay.

In addition, the Sr. Planner is responsible for generating or reviewing the technical and budget approval documents created by other planners to ensure that they are accurate and complete; has advanced proficiency in Google and Microsoft Office Suites, and working knowledge of AutoCAD and other communication and presentation software.

Capital Planning and Space Management (CPSM) is a unit within the Division of Business Administration (BAS.) The Division includes a broad and diverse set of operational units that provides and maintains administrative, student development and physical infrastructure that supports the mission of the campus. As a member of BAS, CPSM supports the Office of the Chancellor and Campus Provost/Executive Vice Chancellor in the areas of capital financial planning and policy analysis. In this capacity, CPSM develops and maintains relevant databases, provides analyses of policies and programs, assists in the determination of campus priorities, and in the development of strategies designed to achieve these priorities. The After School Instructor will plan, prepare, and instruct recreation activities (Instructor Aides will assist). Activities may include art, cooking, dance, STEM activities and other program areas. Programs are designed for children ages 6-12 years of age (school grades 2nd to 6th). Job site placement: Brier, Cabrillo, or Grimmer Elementary.

Schedule

Program End Date: Monday, June 6, 2022

Instructor Aide Hours: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday: 2:30pm-6pm. Wednesday: 2pm-6pm.

Instructor Lead Hours: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday: 2:00pm-6pm. Wednesday: 1:30pm-6pm.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES (These duties are a general description and are not all inclusive.)

• Develop and submit lesson plans including class content and material needs.
• Reinforce instruction on an individual or small group basis by assisting or tutoring students.
• Lead organized activities to develop and strengthen youth academic, recreational, and social skills.
• Plan lessons and activities so they are appropriate to students with various abilities.
• Ability to requisition supplies and/or purchasing program supplies within City guidelines.
• Evaluate and provide constructive feedback on activities.
• Conduct creative and safe class meetings; instruct students on the safe and proper use of supplies, tools, and equipment.
• Participate in cleaning and maintaining the facilities and equipment.
• Interact professionally and appropriately with parents, students, and staff.
• Communicate with supervisor regarding classroom needs.
• Attend staff meetings and trainings.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED AND RECEIVED

General supervision is provided by a Program Coordinator or Recreation Supervisor. The Instructor Lead may supervise an Instructor Aide.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

• Must be a minimum of 18 years of age.
• At least one year's experience working with children in an academic or recreation setting.
• Must be willing and able to work days, nights, weekends, and holidays as required.
• High school diploma or equivalent.

REQUIREMENTS FOR EMPLOYMENT

• Must be able to handle sensitive and/or stressful situations or information with tact, discretion and significant awareness of confidentiality.
• Must effectively communicate with adults and children from a variety of cultural backgrounds
• Knowledge of youth education and recreation programs and methods of implementation.
• Willingness to comply with suspected child abuse reporting (11166.5 PC)
• Employees are required to be certified in Adult/Child CPR & First Aid from American Red Cross, American Heart Association or supervisor approved equivalent. Employees must be certified within 30 days of hire date or prior to the first day of work, whichever occurs earlier.
• Fingerprinting and TB test are required
• Must submit verification of legal right to work in the United States as a condition of employment
• Completion of two years of college or pass Paraprofessional/Instructional Assistant Exam

SELECTION PROCESS

Qualified application will be evaluated on the basis of related experience and quality of presentation.

The most highly qualified applicants will be invited to an oral interview. Applicant evaluations may include a written and physical test. Satisfactory candidates will be placed on an eligibility list. Placements are anticipated immediately after the list is established. Some placements may be assigned to emphasize public education as the City's needs require.

Some positions may require a health evaluation.
