The County of San Mateo Department of Public Works is looking for up to 2 summer interns to perform a variety of administrative and technical functions in the Engineering and Resource Protection Division. Interns will gain on-the-job experience under the guidance of experienced professional engineers, Public Works Technicians, and surveyors while participating in various activities in the assigned discipline.
College students in Associate, Undergraduate and Graduate Degree programs studying the following are encouraged to apply:

1. Engineering (Civil, Environmental, Geotechnical, Structural, Transportation and Water Resources Engineering)

4. Geographical Information Systems (GIS) Technology

Examples Of Duties

• Scan, review, and file documents.
• Prepare letters, forms, spreadsheets, and database.
• Evaluate Division web pages and make recommendations for improvements.
• Aid in design tasks under supervision, such as drafting plans, specifications, utility letters, and creating models.
• Assist with field inspections to assess construction progress and current site conditions.
• Collect, enter, and analyze project-related data.
• Prepare reports, flyers, and presentations summarizing findings and observations.
• Support permitting processes by gathering documentation and liaising with regulatory agencies.
• Assist with inspections during the construction phase by reviewing plans and responding to RFIs, preparing CCO’s and construction related correspondences.
• Maintain organized records of project documents and correspondence.
• Conduct research on industry best practices and emerging technologies.
• Collaborate with project team members to ensure alignment with project goals.
• Attend training sessions and workshops for professional development.
• Ensure compliance with safety regulations and protocols at all times.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications

• Education: At the time of submitting application, you must be enrolled in an accredited university or a community college.

Work Schedule:
 Work in an onsite environment, and you may be expected to work onsite in the office up to 5 days per week. In-office workdays are determined by the nature of the work and are scheduled by your supervisor.

Job Description:

The Town of Los Altos Hills is recruiting a college intern to work in the Community Development Department. The intern will split time between the planning and building divisions of CDD. The role for planning will include support of both short range and long range planning.  Interns working on long range planning will work primarily as a research aide for the Town’s 2023-2031 certified Housing Element implementation.  For short range planning and the building division support interns will be focused on day to day permit activities, but may also work on other more general department duties as needed.

 

Examples of Duties:

• Conduct research and analysis of State Law and Fair Housing requirements for the Town’s 2023-2031 certified Housing Element implementation
• Conduct field investigations as necessary
• Prepare and conduct surveys in association with the Housing Element implementation progress and reporting

Job Description:  

The intern will work in the Public Works/Engineering Department and will be assisting engineering project managers with general clerical, administrative, field work, and technical tasks for public works projects.  Tasks may include electronic document filing, checking mathematical calculations, creating spreadsheets using Microsoft Excel, preparing presentations using Microsoft PowerPoint, entering data and creating reports in various software applications, performing field data collection or investigation, construction management, internet research, creating map displays using Auto CAD, Google Maps/Earth, compiling and organizing data or documents.  The intern may also assist in other areas such as internal and external Department communication and public outreach.

Next Generation Regional Internship Program

In conjunction with the Two-County (San Mateo and Santa Clara) Regional Internship Program, the City of South San Francisco offers paid summer internship opportunities for current undergraduate and graduate college students who are interested in contributing to the community. An internship with the City of South San Francisco offers valuable, real-world job experience in a local government setting. Through this internship, you will gain exposure to a wide variety of programs and services, while enhancing and sharpening your writing, presentation, research, analysis, and critical thinking skills. As part of the Two-County Regional Internship Program, this experience will also be supplemented with learning forums and access to professionals in your interested field.

These paid positions are part-time and do not include benefits. The intern position is a temporary assignment for summer 2024. These positions include flexible scheduling and College/University credit may be provided, as applicable. Interns receive direction and guidance from a supervisor who is traditionally part of the management staff.

 

Project Description

Under supervision, the History Room Intern will assist with archival projects at the City of South San Francisco Public Library. Interns may assist with collection processing, creating metadata, describing public events, and social media and/or other outreach initiatives. The intern will gain an on-the-job understanding of archival standards and best practices and learn how to use the ArchivesSpace content management system and other technologies. They will also gain experience working with a variety of archival materials. In addition to archival projects, the intern will help plan, coordinate, and host one public event and create a public display showcasing archival material. The internship helps develop the intern’s communication, research, information management, and problem-solving skills.

 

Project Outcomes

The History Room Intern will learn how to process and describe collections and materials housed in the Library’s History Room.

The City of Belmont, in partnership with Carlmont High School, will be hosting summer high school internships for students that are interested in public government. This unique opportunity was created to expose the student community of Belmont to the many departments it takes to run a City.

 THE POSITION  

The Community Development and Transportation Department (CDT) is seeking a value-driven team player to fill the position of Planning Intern. This internship provides an excellent opportunity for an enthusiastic college level student seeking broad experience within a dynamic City Planning Division. The Planning Division of the Community Development and Transportation Department administers City Council policies contained in the General Plan, Zoning Ordinance, and other plans and ordinances. In addition, the Division establishes new and amended rules governing land use and urban design for adoption by City Council from the platform of the General Plan. The Division provides staff, professional service, and administrative support relating to the development, improvement, and preservation of affordable housing opportunities.

The Planning Intern will assist with a number of projects and efforts throughout the Division, which may include:

• Shadowing and assisting Planning staff during counter hours

THE POSITION:  The City of San Mateo’s Community Development Department has an opportunity for an intern to work on a number of projects. •    Contracts / Grant Administration. Support the Housing Division Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) and Permanent Local Housing Allocation (PLHA) administration of contracts and grant funds for nonprofit recipients.
•    Housing Element Compliance / Certification. Support the Housing Division with implementation of Housing Element policies and programs.
•    Community Relations Commission Support. Support the Community Relations Commission, under the direction of the commission liaison, in coordinating commission meeting, preparing documents for commission review, and preparing commission documents for approval and filing with the City Clerk.

In addition, the intern may work on a variety of other projects to support Community Development Department special projects and operations, depending upon need, availability and interest.
