San Mateo Consolidated Fire Department

The San Mateo Consolidated Fire Department commenced operations on January 13, 2019, and serves the cities of Belmont, Foster City, and San Mateo as a Joint Powers Authority. The Department collectively has ten engines and two trucks operating out of nine fire stations. There are 164 full-time employees assigned to one of the following divisions: Administration, Community Risk Reduction, and Fire Operations. The Department serves nearly 161,000 residents daily with a day-time population around 230,000. Additionally, the department participates in a mutual aid program throughout the county, helping to secure a million people daily. What You’ll Do

• Interpret and enforce provisions of fire prevention and fire safety laws, ordinances, and other regulations.
• Perform periodic inspections of new and existing buildings, structures and installations requiring fire clearances; identify fire hazards; recommend corrective actions; perform follow-up inspections to see that corrective actions have been taken.
• Investigate complaints pertaining to violation of fire prevention laws, issue correction orders as necessary.
• Investigate fires; secure fire scenes; identify types of fires; investigate causes of fire; collect, prepare, and present evidence; interview witnesses and suspects; write fire investigations; testify in court when required.
• Provide information to the public concerning the fire prevention practices and procedures; develop and conduct training programs and group presentations relative to fire prevention and fire investigation.
• Instruct fire suppression crews about code interpretation and inspection techniques regarding fire prevention.
• Draw and prepare diagrams of buildings for pre-fire planning and fire inspections.
• Check building plans for code compliance, consult with architects and developers regarding problems and solutions.
• Perform tests on water flow, sprinkler and fire alarms and elevator return systems; certify smoke detectors.
• Prepare records and reports.
• Provide information to the public in forums and meetings.
• Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.

THE DEPARTMENT

The Fire Department operates five (5) fire stations throughout the City which are staffed 24-hours per day, plus an Emergency Operations Center and Fire Training Tower. Two fire stations have paramedic ambulances. The City of South San Francisco is the only Fire Department in San Mateo County providing its own paramedic transport services. The Paramedic ambulances respond to medical emergencies, as well as structure fires and other hazardous incidents. The department cross-staffs a Type I/Heavy Urban Search and Rescue, an OES Type VI Engine, and two Fire/Rescue Boats.

The Fire Department is an active participant in the San Mateo County automatic aid system and responds regularly in support of neighboring jurisdictions throughout the county, including the San Francisco International Airport.  Department members are eligible to participate on FEMA USAR California Task Force 3, sponsored by the Menlo Park Fire Protection District.  The department is also an active participant in the Bay Area Maritime Search and Rescue Council and regularly trains with other fire agencies and the United States Coast Guard.  

The City is planning for the replacement and expansion of two of its existing fire stations, modernizing and relocating the facilities to better serve the public.

In support of the San Mateo County automatic aid agreement, all entry level candidates will attend a regional, county-wide, fire academy where they will be introduced to all agencies in the county and rotate through a variety of training sites.  The roughly 12-week academy also includes specialized training depending on candidate certifications.

Training is provided to protect life, property, and the environment from the risks of fire, explosion, and hazardous materials.

Incumbents perform paramedic ambulance transport services, engage in medical aid, firefighting, and all other suppression and prevention activities to protect life and property; drive, operate, and maintain fire apparatus and equipment; assist and participate in training, inspections, and related fire prevention and public education activities.

This is one of newer programs within the Marysville Fire Department.  The Marysville Fire Department is hiring continuously for three (3) Seasonal Firefighters.  

For this position, each hour worked will be paid at $16.50, that will be paid monthly in accordance with the City of Marysville's established pay schedule, with a maximum of 960 hours per appointment. 

The City of San Bruno Fire Department offers an exciting opportunity to serve as a Fire Cadet. Our one-year Fire Cadet program is an unpaid, volunteer work experience program that offers hands-on training, and introductory knowledge of firefighting skills, fire service tools and equipment. Cadets respond to emergency calls, render Basic Life Support and participate in training, and participate in the daily station duties.

Cadets must be willing to commit to 24-hour shifts, two to four times per month. The cadet program is one year in length. Upon completion, this program meets the manipulative training and experience requirements in obtaining a California State Fire Marshal’s Office Firefighter II certification.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

• State of California EMT or National Registry EMT certification
• Possession of a valid driver’s license and a driving record with minimal violations
• Possession of a Firefighter I Academy certification (or proof of “student in good standing” letter signed by an Academy Instructor if currently enrolled)
• 18 years of age at the time of application

The Position:

The Assistant City Manager works directly for the City Manager in the Office of the City Manager. The Office is responsible for the general management and oversight of Daly City’s municipal operations, including the North County Fire Authority and North San Mateo County Sanitation District. This involves service and coordination to multiple agencies and municipalities.  Additionally, the general management of the operating and capital budgets;
financial planning for the municipal corporation; continued improvement, expansion, or redirection of programs and activities within the organization to meet community needs; recommendation of senior management personnel; participation in labor relations activities; generating public information, facilitating conversation and information exchange with citizens, encouraging community participation; and representing the organization in  
inter-jurisdictional matters with other agencies as designated by the City Manager.

These are seasonal grant-funded positions assigned to a 40-hour work week. This position is expected to be active from approximately May through November.  The actual start and end dates will be dependent on weather and snow conditions and may be extended beyond 6 months, but no more than 9 months from the employment start date.  The eligibility list established from this recruitment will be used to fill current and future vacancies. The North Tahoe Fire Protection District is currently accepting applications for current and future job openings from qualified individuals to serve on the chipping crew. These positions are grant-funded, seasonal positions assigned to a 40-hour work week. These positions are returning to the fire district in 2025, and we’ll be hiring three people to operate the chipping crew.  This position is expected to be active from approximately May through November.  The actual start and end dates will be dependent on weather and snow conditions and may be extended beyond 6 months, but no more than 9 months from the employment start date.  The eligibility list established from this recruitment will be used to fill current and future vacancies.  

The Chipping Crew Members work under the direct supervision of the Division Chief of Fire and Life Safety or their designee.  

The primary purpose of this crew is to operate a residential chipping program for the local community. This includes responding to chipping requests, traveling to those addresses with a truck and chipper, chipping the material, ensuring a clean site upon leaving, potentially hauling and dumping the material at a temporary holding site, assisting with loading, and ensuring activities are adequately tracked. The applicant must be comfortable working in outdoor environments under varying weather conditions and lifting objects frequently up to 25 pounds and occasionally up to 50 pounds.  Chipping crew members will also assist with community workdays utilizing the truck and chipper or assisting with cutting and hauling combustible materials and filling green waste dumpsters.
