Next Generation Regional Internship Program
In conjunction with the Two-County (San Mateo and Santa Clara) Regional Internship Program, the City of South San Francisco offers paid summer internship opportunities for current undergraduate and graduate college students who are interested in contributing to the community. An internship with the City of South San Francisco offers valuable, real-world job experience in a local government setting. Through this internship, you will gain exposure to a wide variety of programs and services, while enhancing and sharpening your writing, presentation, research, analysis, and critical thinking skills. As part of the Two-County Regional Internship Program, this experience will also be supplemented with learning forums and access to professionals in your interested field.
These paid positions are part-time and do not include benefits. The intern position is a temporary assignment for summer 2024. These positions include flexible scheduling and College/University credit may be provided, as applicable. Interns receive direction and guidance from a supervisor who is traditionally part of the management staff.
Project Description
The goal for the NextGen intern will be to support the Literacy Services Coordinator in the development of action plans for the literacy program. Duties and responsibilities include: administering foundational literacy skill assessments to adult learners; assisting with the development of literacy training materials for volunteers; conceiving, developing, and executing unique and engaging social media and outreach campaigns. In consultation with the Literacy Services Coordinator, review literacy assessment data and recommend practice activities.
Project Outcomes
Interns will be working with the Literacy Services Coordinator and Project Read team to develop and identify outreach strategies for our diverse adult learner population and to increase program enrollment and retention of tutors for Project Read. Interns will create social media content and flyers to engage both adult learners and volunteers. Help the Literacy Coordinator build an effective survey of current learners and tutors to identify areas of growth and improvement for the program. Interns will be introduced to methods and principles of teaching adults including English language learners who have passed the initial Project Read assessment. Interns will create and support the implementation of relevant community workshops that fit the needs of Project Read adult learners and volunteers all while research learning objectives and present concepts using concrete examples using principles of andragogy.
