The City of Berkeley invites you to apply for the position of Registered Environmental Health Specialist! In this role, you will have the opportunity to apply your knowledge of environmental health and safety regulations to make a positive impact for the Berkeley community. You will be responsible for conducting inspections of private and public properties, interpreting sanitary regulations, and investigating complaints for possible health regulation violations.

Part of our Health, Housing, and Community Services Department, the Environmental Health Division administers programs in Food Safety, Vector Control, Noise Control, Tobacco Licensing, Cannabis, Recreational Health, Water Quality, and Body Art.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Equivalent to graduation from a four year college or university with major coursework in environmental health, sanitation or a related biological field. State certification in pesticide use and safety and vertebrate vector control is desirable.

In this role, you will perform as a technical portfolio manager overseeing staff assigned to function as project managers. You will be responsible for establishing, implementing and maintaining an enterprise IT portfolio management program to ensure that IT projects and programs are planned and delivered according to business unit demands and priority. The Program Manager II will collaborate with the IT Director/CIO, other IT leads and City department heads (and/or their delegates) to provide the vision and leadership necessary to plan and execute strategic programs and tactical projects.

The Department

The Position

As a key member of the Police Department's management team, the Police Records Administrator (Manager) plans, organizes and supervises the activities of a Police Records Unit engaged in the processing of police reports and warrants, the accessing of law enforcement information networks, the preparation of records for prosecution, and reception of the general public. The incumbent has considerable latitude in the application of departmental policy, following general guidelines and professional and administrative standards in accomplishing assignments. The Position

The Police Communications Call Taker (Per Diem) receives emergency and non-emergency call for service, performs technical support duties in police department communications, and performs related duties as required. The position requires excellent customer service and communication skills.

Experience: One (1) year in a law enforcement agency within the last thirty-six (36) months and possession of a current Basic California P.O.S.T Certificate.

Education: High school diploma or equivalent (possession of an Associate's degree or Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution is desirable).

POLICE OFFICER

Candidates must have successfully completed a California POST approved Basic Police Academy with a valid California POST Academy Certificate; OR Currently attending a POST approved Basic Police Academy and/or has been accepted to a POST approved Basic Police Academy.

The City of Hayward is accepting application for Police Officer--Academy Graduates and Academy Participants. Police Officers at the City of Hayward perform a wide variety of law enforcement assignments including but not limited to: patrol, traffic control, criminal and juvenile investigation, and radio communication. Those candidates who are currently participating in the Police Academy would be hired as a Police Officer Trainee ($5,837-$6,125). The Police Officer Trainee is hired into a civilian position for the period of time they are assigned to the police academy. Upon successful completion of training at the academy, Trainees will then be sworn in and appointed to the classification of Police Officer. Police Officer Trainee benefits are limited to those of a civilian employee.

DEFINITION 

Under general supervision, the Police Officer patrols the City's commercial, industrial, and residential districts; enforces laws and ordinances of the state of California and the city of Hayward, works closely with the community to preserve the peace and promote public safety; carefully documents own activities in written reports and statements; performs a wide variety of law enforcement assignments such as patrol, traffic control, criminal and juvenile investigation, radio communications, and administrative services; provides court testimony; investigates crimes such as burglary, robbery, assault, and disturbing the peace; assists firefighters and emergency medical technicians; and performs related duties as assigned.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS 

Work normally consists of routine police tasks performed according to Department rules and regulations. The Position

The Police Public Service Assistant (PSA) III is assigned to the Police Department’s Crime Lab and provides support to the Forensic Specialists and Crime Scene Investigators during operations in the Crime Lab. The Police Public Service Assistant III position requires excellent customer service and communication skills.

Examples of job duties include:

• Ordering and purchasing supplies.
• Re-supply evidence packaging area and appropriate lab areas.
• Clerical tasks, to include typing, running stats, electronic filing tasks, etc.
• Pick up and return evidence as needed.
• Pick up and deliver equipment and supplies.
• Arrange logistical operations within the lab and evidence packaging area including but not limited to arranging chemical waste and sharps removal, filter replacement, etc.
• Minor maintenance on office or lab equipment as required.
• Assist in assembling print kits for evidence collection.
• Identify and communicate with police, and outside vendors to complete job duties.
• Escorts outside vendors while they conduct business on the police campus.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

The Position

The Public Service Assistant (PSA) II is assigned to the Police Department’s Red-Light Camera Unit. Under direct supervision of the Traffic Enforcement Project Specialist, the Public Service Assistant II will perform administrative tasks in support of the Police Department’s Red-Light Camera Unit. This position is a temporary/part-time appointment and may work up to 20 hours a week.

Examples of job duties include:

• Order and prepare court packets of red-light violation from Red Flex for review by court commissioner and defendants.
• Research and understand several sections of the vehicle, government and evidence code as it pertains to red light violations.
• Prepare trial by written declaration packets.
• Research and print out DMV information, including photos and convictions for case files.
• Assist with conducting enforcement sign and equipment verifications.
• Assist with verifying yellow light timing with city Traffic Engineers.
• Assist with review and maintenance of court evidence binders.
• Uploading case file evidence.
• Research statistical studies and assist in report preparation.
• Order office supplies and maintain a functional and organized workspace.
• Retrieve, sort and distribute incoming mail.
• Answer phone and return phone and email messages.
