ABOUT THE POSITION
The City of Gilroy is recruiting an undergraduate or graduate-level City Administration College Intern for the summer of 2024. This internship will provide a significant opportunity to gain experience and exposure and accumulate skills that are used daily in various city government programs that make substantial impacts to the community. These programs are in the areas of the City Clerks office, emergency management, economic development, public information and outreach, and other municipal administration programs and services.
 
The City Administration Intern will perform a variety of functions under the direction of the City Administrator and supervision of the Assistant to the City Administrator.

VOLUNTEER WORK SCHEDULE 
Internships can start as early as May 31, 2024 and end as late as September 30, 2024. 
 
This paid internship is offered at 15 - 25 hours per week with flexible scheduling. The selected Intern may request a schedule of their choice during standard work hours as described below. The office start and end date of the internship will be determined at the time of hire. Work hours are generally Monday – Friday between 8:00am – 5:00pm.

The City of Belmont, in partnership with Carlmont High School, will be hosting summer high school internships for students that are interested in public government. This unique opportunity was created to expose the student community of Belmont to the many departments it takes to run a City.

 THE POSITION  

The Community Development and Transportation Department (CDT) is seeking a value-driven team player to fill the position of Planning Intern. This internship provides an excellent opportunity for an enthusiastic college level student seeking broad experience within a dynamic City Planning Division. The Planning Division of the Community Development and Transportation Department administers City Council policies contained in the General Plan, Zoning Ordinance, and other plans and ordinances. In addition, the Division establishes new and amended rules governing land use and urban design for adoption by City Council from the platform of the General Plan. The Division provides staff, professional service, and administrative support relating to the development, improvement, and preservation of affordable housing opportunities.

The Planning Intern will assist with a number of projects and efforts throughout the Division, which may include:

• Shadowing and assisting Planning staff during counter hours
• Maintaining a database of Planning permit records and files to serve an online permit viewing tool;
• Conducting research for various strategic planning studies that could include: Central Redwood City Master Plan, an Accessory Dwelling Unit Showcase, and Historic Preservation Ordinance;
• Investigating opportunities for increasing public involvement in Planning Division activities;
• Investigating opportunities for new methods of communicating with the public using social media, videos, and newsletters
• Preparing updates to documents, forms, handouts and other materials;
• Other appropriate tasks as needed.

About the Position: The Planning Department is seeking two interns who are interested in learning about open space conservation and planning for ecologically sensitive recreation. Their responsibilities may include researching and compiling project information, supporting with community and stakeholder engagement, assisting with environmental review and documentation, researching new programs and initiatives, conducting field surveys and data collection, and using computer-based systems such as GIS, Microsoft Excel and Adobe Illustrator for analysis of data and preparation of documents regarding Midpen lands and facilities. The interns will work as a team and individually on assignments, including opportunities for field work to gain experience in data collection techniques and tools and on-the-job training in planning research, analysis, and written communication.  The expected start date for the interns is on or after July 8, 2024. We have limited flexibility to change the start date.

Basic Requirements: Internships are open to applications from current students or recent graduates (within the last 12 months). Successful candidates will have a background in the natural sciences, park/open space management, land use/environmental planning, GIS/geography, biology, ecology, or another related field; and experience with field data collection techniques. This internship requires strong organizational and analytical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently and with a team. Experience with MS Outlook, MS Word and Excel, ArcGIS software, GPS equipment, Microsoft Excel, and Apple iPads is desired, and familiarity with Midpen preserves/trails as well as local flora, fauna, and natural history are a plus.   Possession of or ability to obtain a valid California driver’s license is required. Must possess the ability to lift, carry, push and pull materials and objects weighing up to 25 pounds.

Working Conditions: This position will report to the Planning Department at the Administrative Office in Los Altos, California.  Midpen offers a hybrid office/telecommute work environment for this position, which will be divided between onsite work, field visits, and limited home office work.  Fieldwork is conducted in rural or mountainous Midpen open space areas, which may involve working alone or with another intern in wildland areas, traversing rough difficult terrain sometimes with poison oak and dense vegetation, and carrying equipment weighing up to 25 pounds. This is a temporary position working 20 – 40 hours per week, which will extend up to a total of 950 hours over a 6-9 month period. This is a non-benefited position.

THE POSITION:  The City of San Mateo’s Community Development Department has an opportunity for an intern to work on a number of projects. The Department, which has about 55 full time employees, includes the Building, Housing, Planning, Code Enforcement, & Business/Admin Divisions. The Management Analyst Intern will primarily support the Housing and Business/Admin Divisions and receive primary supervision from the Department’s Business Manager and Housing Manager, and project specific direction from the supervisor/manager primarily responsible for each specific project. •    Contracts / Grant Administration. Support the Housing Division Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) and Permanent Local Housing Allocation (PLHA) administration of contracts and grant funds for nonprofit recipients.
•    Housing Element Compliance / Certification. Support the Housing Division with implementation of Housing Element policies and programs.
•    Community Relations Commission Support. Support the Community Relations Commission, under the direction of the commission liaison, in coordinating commission meeting, preparing documents for commission review, and preparing commission documents for approval and filing with the City Clerk.

In conjunction with the Two-County (San Mateo and Santa Clara) Regional Internship Program, the City of South San Francisco offers paid summer internship opportunities for current undergraduate and graduate college students who are interested in contributing to the community. An internship with the City of South San Francisco offers valuable, real-world job experience in a local government setting. Through this internship, you will gain exposure to a wide variety of programs and services, while enhancing and sharpening your writing, presentation, research, analysis, and critical thinking skills. As part of the Two-County Regional Internship Program, this experience will also be supplemented with learning forums and access to professionals in your interested field.

These paid positions are part-time and do not include benefits. The intern position is a temporary assignment for summer 2024. These positions include flexible scheduling and College/University credit may be provided, as applicable. Interns receive direction and guidance from a supervisor who is traditionally part of the management staff.

Project Description

The goal for the NextGen intern will be to support the Literacy Services Coordinator in the development of action plans for the literacy program. Duties and responsibilities include:   administering foundational literacy skill assessments to adult learners; assisting with the development of literacy training materials for volunteers; conceiving, developing, and executing unique and engaging social media and outreach campaigns.   In consultation with the Literacy Services Coordinator, review literacy assessment data and recommend practice activities.

Project Outcomes

Interns will be working with the Literacy Services Coordinator and Project Read team to develop and identify outreach strategies for our diverse adult learner population and to increase program enrollment and retention of tutors for Project Read. Interns will create social media content and flyers to engage both adult learners and volunteers.   Help the Literacy Coordinator build an effective survey of current learners and tutors to identify areas of growth and improvement for the program. Interns will be introduced to methods and principles of teaching adults including English language learners who have passed the initial Project Read assessment. Interns will create and support the implementation of relevant community workshops that fit the needs of Project Read adult learners and volunteers all while research learning objectives and present concepts using concrete examples using principles of andragogy.

Project Description

Intern will work with fleet management staff to populate fleet management software with data and create custom reports with data. Intern will also be involved in integration and migration of data from other platforms such as fueling logs.

Project Outcomes

This project will aid in streamlining fleet operations, inform future policy and purchases, and improve data retention. Intern will learn to plan and complete a multi-faceted project requiring cross departmental collaboration.

The City of Foster City has an opening for a Engineering Intern in the Public Works Department. The position is part-time with flexible scheduling, up to 980 hours per fiscal year, and no benefits provided. The department is interested in candidates for the summer or candidates who can start as soon as possible.  

Important and Essential Responsibilities: 
Daily responsibilities will include works directly with the Public Works staff, populating the Geographic Information Systems (GIS) database, and performing indexing and data entry. Other duties may include providing project assistance to technical and engineering staff related to capital improvement projects, researching, CAD drafting, plan review, data collection and analysis, permit issuance, and compiling information from various sources, and providing administrative or other support in the Public Works Department. 

Education and Training Guidelines: 
Any combination equivalent to experience and education that could likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way would be:

• Education: Graduation from high school. A degree or degree in progress in Engineering program in a school or university is required.
• Experience:  No experience is necessary; 6 months of paid or documented volunteer experience in a municipal agency is desirable.

Licenses, Certificates, Registration: 
Possess a valid California Driver's license with a good driving record.

Salary will be determined by experience and education.

 Creation of Bicycle Advisory Commission      

A Bicycle Advisory Commission of the Town of Danville is hereby established.  The Commission shall consist of six (6) regular members, one of whom shall be a Youth Commissioner.

Qualifications

All members of the Commission shall have experience, training, occupation, or education demonstrating a knowledge of and interest in bicycling.  Members of the Commission shall represent an inclusive cross-section of interests in bicycling such as recreational cyclists (road and mountain biking), commuters, families, seniors and youth, and merchants interested in cycling and cycling safety.

Powers and Duties

Advise the Town Council and Town Staff on matters related to:

1. Implementation of the Town’s Bicycle Master Plan;
2. Conditions, operations and safety of existing bicycle facilities and other non-motorized forms of transportation;
3. Review of proposed bicycle-related policies, programs, projects, plans, funding applications, and legislation;
4. Coordination with the public including bicycle-related organizations, the business community, and other local agencies to promote cycling projects and programs; and
5. Development and dissemination of bicycle awareness and education materials to the community.

Term of Office

For the initial five appointments to the Commission except the Youth Commissioner, two of the members shall be appointed to two-year terms and three shall be appointed to four-year terms.  All subsequent appointments shall be for four-year terms.  The term of the Youth Commissioner shall be two years.

Time and Place of Regular Meetings

The Commission shall hold at least one regular quarterly meeting.  The Commission shall fix the time and place of its regular meetings by resolution and may call special meetings as necessary.  All meetings of the Commission are open to the public and the Commission shall give notice of its meetings as required by law.

Absence from Meetings

If a member of the Commission is absent without cause from three (3) consecutive regular meetings of the Commission, that member’s office shall be vacant automatically. The Commission shall immediately notify the Town Council of the vacancy. A member is not absent without cause if that member’s absence is (1) due to illness or (2) unavoidable, and the member gives the Secretary of the Commission notice before the day of the regular meeting at which the member will be absent and giving the reason for the absence. 

Removal or Vacancy

A member of the Commission may be removed by a majority vote of the Council.  A vacancy is filled in the same manner as the original appointment.  A person appointed to fill a vacancy serves for the remainder of the unexpired term.  

No Compensation

Members of the Commission shall not receive compensation for their attendance at Commission meetings but are entitled to reimbursement for reasonable expenses actually incurred in the course of their duties, provided that such reimbursement shall first be approved by the Town Council. 

Adoption of Rules

The Commission shall adopt rules for the transaction of its business and shall keep a public record of its resolutions, transactions, findings, and determinations. 

Residency Requirement

All members of the Commission shall be residents of the Town of Danville.

Qualifications and Role of Youth Commissioner

The Town Council shall appoint a Youth Commissioner to serve on the Commission to represent the interests of Danville youth. The Youth Commissioner shall be a Danville resident of high school age. The Youth Commissioner shall have the same obligations and authority of all other commissioners.

Officers and their Duties

The Commission shall elect a Chair and Vice-Chair from among its members. The Chair and the Vice-Chair serve for a term of one (1) year and until the successor of each is appointed and qualified.  The Chair shall preside at all meetings of the Commission, shall appoint committees of the Commission as needed, and shall perform such additional duties as are necessary and incidental to the office.  The Vice-Chair shall perform the duties of the Chair on such occasions as the Chair shall be unavailable or unable to perform such duties.

Brown Act and Conflicts of Interest

The Commission shall be subject to and conduct its business in compliance with the Ralph M. Brown Act, California Government Code, Section 54950 et seq. The members of the Commission shall be subject to the provisions of the Town’s Conflict of Interest Code.
