The Police Communications Center is a fast-paced environment serving first responders and the community during emergency and non-emergency events. Communications Officers interact daily with the public and law enforcement personnel through phone calls, 9-1-1 events, in person and over the police radio system. We are looking for highly skilled professionals who can multi-task and react calmly during emergency situations, while making quick decisions and determining the nature and severity of service calls. ABOUT THE POSITION

Under general supervision, the Communications Officer, as a member of the Police Department, transmits and receives information over the police and public works radio system; dispatches routine and emergency calls for service; types, records, and files information; handles emergency and non-emergency telephone calls utilizing complex technical aids, such as computer aided dispatch systems (CAD), and performs related work as assigned.

Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Receives emergency and non-emergency telephone calls from the public for police, fire, or other emergency services; determines the nature of the call and the resources necessary to respond.
• Monitors police radio communications; maintains contact with police units to track officer status and respond to need for additional resources; monitors various radio channels to keep abreast of county-wide police activities affecting the City and assist other county agencies with mutual aid.
• Prioritizes requests for police and other public safety services; determines availability and location of patrol units; transmits information and dispatches police personnel and equipment in response to calls; routes calls for fire and emergency medical assistance to the Santa Clara County Fire Department.
• Assists police personnel in the field by quickly and accurately researching and relaying criminal history information and other requested data.
• Receives and coordinates requests for emergency Public Works assistance outside of the City’s normal business hours (pertaining to full municipal services in Los Altos, and sewer maintenance requests in Los Altos Hills and the surrounding unincorporated areas).

Certificates:

THE POSITION:

The City of Hayward is seeking a Senior Utilities Engineer with a water and/or wastewater background to supervise, direct, plan, and coordinate the activities of the Utilities Division. The Senior Utilities Engineer is a mid-management level position that performs, oversees, and directs engineering activities including planning, conceptual design, final design, cost estimating, project bidding, services during construction and construction management for a variety of projects in wastewater treatment, water storage and distribution, sewer collection, and storm water management. The ideal candidate will possess in-depth knowledge of wastewater treatment and related water/wastewater infrastructure projects. This position will serve as a key member of the team that will manage and deliver a $100 million treatment system upgrade for the City’s Water Pollution Control Facility (WPCF) to incorporate nutrient removal into the treatment process.  
 
DEFINITION
Under general direction, supervise, direct, plan, and coordinate the assigned functions and activities of the Engineering Section of the Utilities Division.
 
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
This is a mid-management level position that performs, oversees, and directs all assigned activities of the Utilities engineering section, including planning, conceptual design, final design, cost estimating, project bidding process, services during construction and construction management for variety of projects in water distribution, sewer collection, storm water management, and wastewater treatment.  This position is distinguished from that of subordinate Associate Civil Engineer position by its responsibility for the supervision of assigned engineering and technical staff, in addition to engineering and technical responsibilities for project development, design, and construction management for more complex projects.  This position is distinguished from Deputy Director of Public Works for Utilities by the latter position's overall responsibility for all aspects of the Utilities Division functions.

Senior Electrical Engineer

Position Summary

 

Under direction, perform varied professional and electrical engineering work at an advanced level of difficulty in the field and office. Perform assessments of and prepare written reports documenting the existing electrical systems and loads at existing facilities. Work with other engineers and technicians on design of new facilities and rehabilitation/retrofit of existing facilities. May supervise subordinate engineering personnel engaged in design and construction work. May act as resident engineer on major capital improvement projects and as oversight engineer on in-house maintenance and repair projects. Interpret, explain and carry out electrical engineering design, inspection and construction methods and procedures. Responsibilities include regular contact with other professional engineering personnel, as well as contractors and their representatives, and the general public, obtaining and providing technical electrical engineering data and information, preparing, checking and reviewing detailed and complex electrical engineering plans, specifications and related reports. Perform related duties as required.

 

Essential Responsibilities

 

• Performs assessments of electrical systems and prepare written reports documenting the capacity and limitations of the systems
• Performs detailed engineering calculations and analysis in connection with electrical design of utility systems for transportation facilities 
• Prepares and supervises the preparation of detailed electrical engineering designs, drawings, specifications, cost estimates and quantity estimates for a wide range of electrical construction and maintenance projects

• Assists in the preparation of complex contract documents
• Conducts correspondence and prepare technical engineering reports in connection with a wide variety of projects
• Knows and follows the safety and health rules and safe working practices applicable to their job
• Ensures that employees under their supervision follow established safe work practices and obey all safety rules
• Meets and consults with department officials, engineers and contractors on technical engineering matters

Minimum Qualifications

 

Education and/or Experience: 

• Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering
• Five years position-related electrical engineering experience, including design, estimate and specification preparation and the inspection of construction work
• One-year supervisory experience is desirable

 

Required Licenses:  

• Registration (P.E. license) as an Electrical Engineer in the state of California. Must have a PE license as an Electrical Engineer for at least 5 years. 
• Must possess and maintain a current, valid California driver's license and satisfactory driving record. No reckless driving and DUI infractions within the last 7 years. No more than 2 moving violations within the last 3 years. May operate District vehicles.

 

Physical Requirement: 

• Must inspect construction work on the Golden Gate Bridge, other structures and buildings, climb scaffolds, catwalks and ladders

The City of San Jose's Planning, Building and Code Enforcement (PBCE) Department is recruiting to fill a Senior Engineer position in its Building Division. The Building Division is a part of the Development Services team and consists of four Core Groups. These four Groups are: Permit Center, Plan Review, Expedited Review, and Inspection Groups. 

The Senior Engineer in PBCE’s Building Division performs a variety of professional and supervisory assignments including, coordinating and directing the activities of a group of engineers and inspectors in reviewing complex professional plans and calculations to ensure compliance with uniform codes, engineering principles, Federal, State and local ordinances and regulations.

Leads program assessment efforts in streamlining of the current plan review process and evaluating/implementing software for the plan review on-line application.

The Community Energy Department is seeking an Associate Electrical Engineer to support an emerging program which is intended to increase the City’s overall energy resiliency.  This newly formed Associate Electrical Engineer position will collaborate with staff from other departments, consultants, vendors, private developers, and other partners to identify, assess, develop and deliver innovative energy resiliency projects, including participating in the potential development of a City utility to provide electric distribution service to a large development project.

The Associate Electrical Engineer will perform a diverse set of professional electrical engineering-related assignments which are primarily focused on the engineering, design, and implementation of electric distribution microgrids, distributed energy resources, and other electrical projects within new residential, commercial and other land-use developments, as well as City-owned facilities.  The person selected will have knowledge and experience related to the design, construction and operation of high voltage electric transmission and distribution systems, building and other facility electrical systems, and renewable energy generation and storage solutions.  Knowledge and experience related to the design and operation of component-level or integrated electronic circuitry is not applicable to this position.

Knowledge and experience in the following specific areas is directly relevant to this Associate Electrical Engineer position: Experience in electrical power system and microgrid design, including transmission, distribution, generation and storage. Knowledge of electrical power transmission and distribution equipment and operation comprised of 115KV, 21KV, 12KV, 4.16KV and 480V switchgears, substations, breakers, switchboards, panel boards, UPS, generators, substation equipment, and SCADA.  Knowledge of designs for equipment installation, underground duct banks, conduit and other raceway systems, power and control cables and grounding.  Knowledge of building and facility electric distribution, metering and power backup systems and equipment.  Knowledge of renewable energy devices such as wind and solar generators and storage batteries.  Knowledge of distributed energy resource systems implementation and management.  Knowledge of federal and state electric energy laws, regulations, and procedures.  Knowledge of PG&E tariffs, interconnection processes, system impact and facility studies, and transmission and distribution services and operations.  Familiarity with the principles and practices of project and construction management.  Ability to exercise professional level judgment in the application of codes and standards expressed in the California Code of Regulation Title 24, PG&E Greenbook, Institute of Electronic and Electrical Engineers (IEEE), American National Standards Association (ANSI), National Electric Code (NEC), Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), California Mechanical Code (CMC), the California Plumbing Code (CPC), The California Energy Code (CEC), the National Fire Protection Code (NFPA), and will be familiar with the California Building Code (CBC), the California Fire Code (CFC).

DEFINITION

To operate a computer aided dispatch system receiving calls and dispatching police, fire or other City services.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

This is a journey technical level position in which incumbents are expected to independently perform the full range of duties assigned. This class is distinguished from the Communications Supervisor in that the latter provides technical and functional supervision over assigned communication personnel.

The Communications Center in the Support Services Division of the Hayward Police Department is responsible for dispatching both Police and Fire Services throughout the City of Hayward. The Hayward Police Department is one of 18 CALEA (Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement) accredited police departments in California and is committed to maintaining CALEA's high standards and broadly recognized excellence.
The Communications Center is frequently the first point of contact that a member of the public will have when requesting assistance from the City of Hayward. The information gathered by the communications operator during this contact is critical to a positive outcome. The Communications Center consists of six (6) stations with each communications operator assigned to a specific job.
 


 

Essential Duties

Duties may include but are not limited to the following: 

Receives emergency and non-emergency calls from the public, private companies and other jurisdictions.

Dispatches police and fire personnel or other City services in response to such calls.

Relays emergency and non-emergency information to public safety personnel in the field.

Relays information to other agencies as required.

Monitors multiple frequencies.

Maintains accurate record of location and status of public safety units.

Operates a manual dispatch system when necessary.

Assists in relaying information during response to natural disasters.

Performs related work as necessary.

Minimum Qualifications

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION

Any combination equivalent to experience and education that could likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Experience: Two (2) years of heavy public contact experience while performing multiple tasks simultaneously. Public Safety dispatch experience is desirable.

Education: Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth (12th) grade.

Licenses and Certificates: Completion of the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Basic Public Safety Dispatcher course is highly desirable.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS
Typing Certificate: A typing certificate with 35net words per minute must accompany your application.

Under the general supervision of a Senior Engineer, the Associate Engineer position performs a variety of professional engineering, plan review, and inspection work.

Typical duties include, but are not limited to the following:

- Examine plans, perform calculations and review specifications for commercial, industrial, and residential buildings for compliance with the California Building Code, California Fire Code, California State Fire Marshal regulations, and
applicable NFPA standards and local ordinances.
