THE POSITION:  

Under general supervision, the Shelter Volunteer Coordinator assists in the planning, organization, implementation and review of the Animal Care Volunteer Program; assists with recruiting, training, scheduling and evaluation of volunteer staff; performs community liaison functions, coordinates public relations activities; humane education programs and performs related work as required.

The ideal candidate will have prior experience as a volunteer coordinator working in an animal shelter. The candidate will have experience handling shelter animals and be able to train volunteers how to safely handle animals. The candidate will have experience in volunteer program development as well as the ability to analyze volunteer program data for retention. The ideal candidate will have some experience using the Chameleon software for animal management.  

Essential Duties

What you will do:   

Duties may include, but are not limited to the following:
 
Recruits, interviews, recommends, orients, trains and evaluates volunteers; schedules their daily work assignments and activities to assure maximum program coverage and effectiveness;
 
Ensures that all departmental procedures are followed.
 
Under direction from the Animal Services Administrator, responds to volunteer complaints and conflicts that may arise.
 
Maintains a system for tracking volunteer program hours, schedules, skills and abilities, as well as performance measures.
 
Maintains and physically organizes volunteer work areas, files and records.
 
Prepares annual report on volunteer hours and activities.

Under general direction, develops and implements policies and procedures for implementing various volunteer, shelter and community programs; works with Animal Services Bureau Administrator to identify needs and opportunities for utilization of unpaid staff, and to design programs to fill those needs.
 
Designs and develops training and orientation programs in a variety of areas including volunteer program procedures, applicable laws and department policies, techniques for dealing effectively with the public, and the proper and humane handling of animals.
 
Assists with production and update of volunteer training manuals and volunteer job descriptions.
 
Coordinates ongoing training opportunities for volunteers to enhance their skills and keep them engaged; implements a system to provide volunteers with consistent recognition to increase volunteer retention.
 
Coordinates volunteer meetings and annual Volunteer Recognition event.
 
Coordinates and attends meetings with Volunteer Coordinators from other Animal Care Services and volunteer organizations in the Bay Area.
 
Maintains good communication with volunteer staff through personal contact, email and newsletters to keep volunteers apprised of changes, accomplishments and opportunities.
 
Represents the Bureau's various programs to the public and news media through public service announcements, conferences, outreach events and personal contacts with community leaders.
 
Provides Humane Education presentations to local groups, schools and civic organizations.
 
Assists with gathering and review of articles for volunteer produced quarterly "All Fur Love" community newsletter.
 
Coordinates the acquisition and distribution of Animal Services Bureau Volunteer uniforms.
 
Coordinates and oversees volunteer planning committees for events and fundraisers.
 
Performs other essential duties as assigned.

JOB RELATED AND ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS   

You have:   

Any combination of experience and education that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
 
Experience: Two (2) years progressively responsible experience in volunteer program management, public relations, project management or similar field. At least one (1) year of professional animal handling experiences is highly desired.
 
Education: Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth (12th) grade. Education and coursework related to Public Administration, Animal Behavior, and Veterinary Office Assisting or similar is highly desired.
 
License & Certificates: Possess and maintain a valid California Class C Driver's License.

The study reviewed the Community Development and Transportation Department’s Planning, Engineering, and Transportation divisions and aimed to identify operational efficiencies, technology improvements, and a staffing structure better aligned with the workload in order to improve efficiencies. As a result, the Engineering and Transportation functions will now operate as a stand-alone Department with a new Director and Assistant Director. The first step in implementing the Study’s recommendations is to hire a Director and Assistant Director, one of whom will serve as the City Engineer. The new Director, reporting to the Assistant City Manager responsible for land use and development functions, will have functional responsibility for land development, engineering, and transportation, including the City’s Capital Improvement Program (CIP), which includes utilities, civic projects, and construction inspection.

The new Engineering and Transportation Department is supported by 24 FTE and has a FY 2023-24 Capital Budget of approximately $38 million in general infrastructure and transportation projects and $13 million in utility infrastructure projects. The Five-Year CIP (FY 2023-24 to FY 2027-28) totals $473 million, including citywide projects. Major projects include an impressive list of transportation projects, such as the SR84/US101 Freeway Interchange, grade separations along the Caltrain rail line, parking, and transportation demand management and Vision Zero implementation, and various traffic calming and roadway projects. Other major projects entail the Transit Center, the Water Master Plan implementation, finalizing and implementing a Recycled Water Master Plan, and various Stormwater System improvements. The Department of Public Works is currently recruiting to fill a Communications Technician position for the Radio Communications Shop. The Radio Communications shop maintains the communication system for the City of San José that is used by multiple departments, such as: Police, Fire, Department of Transportation, Parks Recreation Neighborhood Services (Park Rangers), and Public Works (Animal Care & Services).

The City of San José public safety and city services depend upon the use of commercial radio communications equipment. For police officers and firefighters, radio communications are the primary means of communicating with the 9-1-1 dispatch center in performing their duties. These vast stand-alone radio systems with fault-tolerant designs are essential to providing the public with reliable emergency response services 24 hours a day, 365 days a year with demand for system survivability through any catastrophic event.

The key responsibilities of the Communications Technician may include:

     * Installation, maintenance and repair of mobile and portable radios, base and control stations, microwave systems, dispatch consoles, voting receivers and comparators, digital Microwave system and P25 LMR systems.

     * Respond to trouble reports, perform preventative maintenance and project assignments. Update technical documentation including wiring block assignments, CEB programming and configurations, as-built drawings of installed equipment at City radio sites, specialized vehicular installations, and diagrams of the City's various communications systems.

     * Provide recommendations for process improvement changes with the input of technical staff.

     * Construct and/or modify communications equipment and perform research on new equipment.

The City of Foster City has an opening for a Engineering Intern in the Public Works Department. The position is part-time with flexible scheduling, up to 980 hours per fiscal year, and no benefits provided. The department is interested in candidates for the summer or candidates who can start as soon as possible.  

Important and Essential Responsibilities: 
Daily responsibilities will include works directly with the Public Works staff, populating the Geographic Information Systems (GIS) database, and performing indexing and data entry. The City of Berkeley invites you to apply for the position of Associate Transportation Engineer in the Transportation Division of the Public Works Department! 

When assigned to development review, you will have the opportunity to review residential, commercial, industrial and public works project plans, traffic impact reports, and other development and design related documents for compliance with City of Berkeley standards and regulations including all applicable local, state, and federal codes and guidelines; evaluate and recommend mitigation measures to address adverse impacts of development projects; review plan checks for small developments; and review traffic control plans for construction projects.

When assigned to capital projects designs and traffic signal systems, you will have the opportunity to manage capital improvement projects including development of conceptual design options, detailed engineering design, bid, and construction administration; prepare council reports, conduct presentations, and respond to project-related public inquiries; design/review traffic engineering design elements for Complete Streets Projects and traffic calming projects; work with project development team to analyze street and road use for all road users focusing on safety and efficiency of transportation networks; and work with traffic signal maintenance team to maintain and upgrade city’s traffic signal system, including using Synchro traffic signal timing software. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

A typical way of gaining the knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position is:

Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university with major course work in civil or traffic engineering and five years of increasingly responsible traffic engineering experience, three years of which were at a level equivalent to the Assistant Transportation Engineer class. Progressively responsible related experience may be substituted for the college course work on a year for year basis.

Other requirements include possession of a valid California Registration as a professional Traffic Engineer or a professional Civil Engineer. A CA Registration as a Traffic Engineer is preferred. Candidates must also possess a valid California driver's license and have a satisfactory driving record. Desirable qualifications include a master's degree in Transportation Engineering/Planning or a related field.  

DEFINITION: Under general supervision, performs a variety of preventative maintenance, repairs, and installation of water pollution control plant, sewage pumping facilities, and equipment; maintains accurate maintenance records; orders and maintains an inventory of supplies, parts, and other frequently used items; and performs related duties as assigned.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

Treatment Plant Maintenance Worker I is distinguished from Treatment Plant Maintenance Worker II in that the Treatment Plant Maintenance Worker II level requires a higher level of certification and is able to perform a broader range of duties more independently.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED AND RECEIVED 

Receives general supervision from supervisory or management staff in assigned department.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The duties listed below are illustrative only and are not meant to be a full and exhaustive listing of all of the duties and responsibilities of the position.

• Maintains and repairs pumps, motors, plumbing, electrical, and exercise and lubricate machinery within the plant; records and maintains accurate maintenance records in a daily log book;
• Orders supplies and materials; orders inventory of frequently used parts, oil, and filters for equipment used in the plant;
• Completes monthly work orders and enters information regarding maintenance tasks into the system; records SCADA; records hours on equipment and meters; makes entries into the end of the month report and prints work order summary;
• Generates new maintenance work orders for each month; prioritizes tasks to be performed on Water Pollution Control Plant equipment;
• Performs cleanup of the plant, removing trash, washing down decks, and clearing leaves and branches from storm drains; cleans tools and makes sure equipment is in proper locations and power tools are in safe working condition;
• Changes oil and filters on various pumps and compressors in the plant; maintains safety inspections of fire extinguishers, eye wash stations, and ladders in the plant;
• Removes and replaces packing from various pumps in the plant; installs new rings of packing with new Lantern rings if damaged; applies grease to the new set of packing for proper lubrication; removes corrosion or debris from packing gland before reinstalling;
• Evaluates pump performance and flow rate to determine if pump has excessive buildup of rags that is affecting its performance and efficiency; shuts down pumps to remove rags from impeller and clears any obstructions;
• Replaces damaged parts/fittings on leaking chemical feed pumps; makes alterations to existing supply tubing or fittings, replacing clamps or O-rings, or removing debris caught in the check valves; inspects, tests, calibrates, adjusts, cleans, and paints equipment in the water pollution control plant; and
• Performs related duties as assigned.

JOB-RELATED QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of: Principles, practices, and techniques of the installation, maintenance, and repair of water treatment plan systems; operation of various hand and power tools; proper procedures to safely perform maintenance on machinery and equipment in the plant; maintenance for MP2 program; recording and updating repair history on water pollution control plant equipment; how to create new work orders and close out completed work orders; forklift operations and scissor lift; replacing, repairing, and installing piping, fittings, and valves on water pollution control equipment; data entry of important, vital information regarding maintenance repairs; performance and evaluation on future preventative maintenance in the WPCP MP2 program; proper protective equipment.

Ability to: Drive and operate vehicles and equipment safely; keep inventory, order, and stock necessary parts and supplies for the maintenance shop; establish and maintain cooperative relationships with those contacted in the course of the work; adhere to prescribed policies, procedures, routines, and practices; carry out assignments with minimal instructions; read and understand written instructions, maps, equipment operation manuals, and other written documents associated with the work; effectively schedule work; effectively keep written records.

EDUCATION AND TRAINING GUIDELINES

Education: High school diploma or equivalent (GED). Technical training in a water treatment plant system or related field is desirable.

Experience: One (1) year of full-time experience in the installation, maintenance, and repair of pollution control plant and sewage pumping facilities.

Licenses: Possession of a valid California Class C driver's license, obtain and maintain a California Class B Driver’s License, and a satisfactory driving record. CWEA Certification as a Grade I Mechanical Technologist.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Respond to work at any hour of the day or night, within designated timeframe, as required during afterhours, weekend service, and/or emergency situations; carry communication equipment in order to respond after work hours. Vision, hearing, and physical ability adequate to obtain and maintain a California Class B Driver’s License; speak clearly and understandably. Requires moderate and sometimes strenuous exertion including bending, stooping, crouching, crawling, climbing, lifting, twisting, digging, carrying, and/or handling material weighing up to one hundred (100) pounds. Work in confined spaces and wear protective equipment. The City of Simi Valley/ Waterworks District No. 8,  Water Division, is seeking to fill an Associate Engineer position.  The Associate Engineer is expected to design, prepare plans using the latest version of AutoCAD, specifications and construction cost estimates for a variety of water infrastructure improvement projects.  Such projects include water main line replacement, water tank rehabilitation and repair, and pump station upgrades.  Other duties include assessing the feasibility of water service for proposed developments, ability to utilize GIS and provide excellent customer service.
