LIFEGUARD I ($16.54 hourly)

SUMMARY

Under immediate supervision, monitors activities in the water, pool decks, and ancillary areas of aquatics facilities to ensure the safety of patrons; learns, explains, and enforces safe swimming programs and pool policies, regulations, and rules.  Performs rescues and administers first aid, CPR, and AED as needed; and performs related work as required.  Lifeguards may be asked to perform office or front desk duties in the aquatic office only.  

 

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

Receives immediate supervision from higher-level supervisory staff and direction from higher-level staff.  Exercises no supervision over staff.

 

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

This is the entry-level classification in the Lifeguard series.  Initially under close supervision, incumbents learn to perform essential lifeguard duties.  Work is usually supervised while in progress and fits an established structure or pattern.  Exceptions or changes in procedures are explained in detail as they arise.  As experience is gained, assignments become more varied; close supervision and frequent review of work is reduced as an incumbent demonstrates the skills necessary to perform the work independently.

3. Performs all required lifeguard-training skills as needed.

10. Assists with District special events as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:

• Prior experience participating in aquatics programs or performing lifeguard duties is desirable.

 

Knowledge of:

• Principles and techniques of lifeguarding, including lifesaving methods and procedures.
• Operational characteristics of water rescue safety equipment and devices.
• Principles and practices for providing high level of customer service.
• Modern office practices, methods, and computer equipment and applications.

 

Ability to:

• Learn and understand the organization and operation of the District’s aquatics facilities.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Work is primarily performed within a public swimming pool environment, where stamina is needed to perform moderate to heavy lifting of pool equipment and furniture or children and adults who may require removal from the pool, and to stay in the pool for prolonged periods.  Must possess the mobility to stand, stoop, kneel, reach, bend, climb, push and pull materials and equipment, and swim while wearing an appropriate uniform with protective equipment.  Vision and hearing must be sufficient to see and hear adults and children in crowded and noisy conditions and/or situations.  Must also possess:  the mobility to work in an office setting and use standard office equipment, including a computer; vision to read printed materials and a computer screen; and hearing and speech to communicate in person or by using a telephone and radio.  Finger dexterity is needed to access, enter, and retrieve data using a computer keyboard or to operate safety equipment.  Must possess the ability to swim distances and dive to pool depths, as determined by testing/certification authorities, and to lift 150 pounds or heavier weights with assistance and/or the use of proper equipment.

 

ENVIRONMENTAL ELEMENTS

Incumbents work outdoors in a pool environment with wet and slippery conditions, and are exposed to variable weather conditions; may be exposed to chlorine, acids, and other chemicals at aquatics facilities, as well as blood and body fluids while rendering first aid and CPR.  Incumbents will interact with individuals in interpreting and enforcing rules, policies, and procedures.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS

Incumbents may be assigned an irregular work schedule, including weekends, early mornings, evenings, and holidays.

• Department of Justice fingerprint clearance.
• TB Test.

LIFEGUARD II ($19.20 hourly)
 

SUMMARY

Under general supervision, opens, closes, and secures the pool facility; monitors activities in the water, pool decks, and ancillary areas of aquatics facilities to ensure the safety of patrons; explains and enforces swimming programs and pool policies, regulations, and rules.  Performs rescues and administers first aid, CPR, and AED as needed; prepares facilities and sets up equipment for special activities and events; and performs related work as required.

 

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

Receives general supervision from higher-level supervisory staff and direction from higher-level staff.  Exercises no supervision over staff.

 

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

This is the journey-level classification in the Lifeguard series responsible for performing the full range of lifeguard duties, including patron safety and opening/closing an assigned pool facility.  Incumbents at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise and are fully aware of the aquatics operating procedures and policies.  This classification is distinguished from the Aquatics Lead in that the latter is an advanced journey-level classification which provides technical and functional direction over assigned lifeguard staff.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Under general supervision, lead, perform lifeguard duties in enforcing City public swimming pool rules and monitoring pool patron conduct; perform emergency rescue and lifesaving techniques. • Lifeguard (Recreation Leader) - $17.14 - $20.84/hourly
  • Under general supervision of the Recreation Coordinator, Senior Lifeguard or Pool Manager, the Lifeguard performs swim instructor duties in teaching swimming and water safety courses, enforcing City public swimming pool rules and monitoring pool patron conduct.  Lifeguards must have knowledge and be physically able to perform emergency rescue and lifesaving techniques.   • Under general supervision from the Recreation Coordinator or Pool Manager, must be able to perform all duties as a Lifeguard and know operational rules and protocols of Dan Oden Swim Complex. Must have basic customer service practices and knowledge of all current safety standards and information related to aquatics. Must assist in teaching swimming lessons and lifeguarding.

 

• Pool Manager (CRS Program Manager) - $19.93 -$24.22/hourly
  • Under general supervision of the Recreation Coordinator, able to perform all duties and responsibilities of a Lifeguard and Senior Lifeguard, assist in staff meetings and lifeguard trainings, direct contact for participants to explain pool rules, policies, and procedures. Pool Manager assists in implementing and scheduling staff, program, and services.

We are now hiring part-time Lifeguards and Water Safety Instructors for our aquatics programs!

Located at the McBean Memorial Pool, our Lifeguards and Water Safety Instructors are an essential part of the aquatics recreational programs that we offer our residents.  Be a part of a team that makes teaches important swimming skills and allows everyone to beat the heat and have fun!

PHYSICAL, MENTAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL WORKING CONDITIONS

The Department:

The Parks and Recreation Department provides planning, development, operation, maintenance, and rehabilitation of the City's neighborhood parks, open space, water sites, recreation buildings, and trails.

 

The Position:

Under supervision, to perform a variety of unskilled and semi-skilled tasks in connection with the development and maintenance of City parks and recreational facilities.

 

As an As-needed Laborer, the successful incumbent will work in the department, performing routine maintenance on various parks and facilities including the city-owned cemetery. This position will assist in maintenance and repair using a variety of tools and specialized equipment. 

The Laborer position performs varied, unskilled and skilled manual tasks related to landscape maintenance and sanitization. Typical tasks include cleaning and sanitizing restrooms and buildings, loading trash and leaves in truck, litter abatement, mowing, edging, cleaning park sites, graffiti abatement, and operating a variety of hand/power tools and heavy equipment as needed. This position may require working weekends, holidays, and after hours. Must be able to read, speak, and write English at a basic level, follow written and oral instruction, and perform heavy lifting.  

 

As an as-needed employee, this is an "at-will" position and there is no guarantee of hours. Hours are limited to 999 in a fiscal year or 960 hours in a fiscal year for retired CalPERS annuitants.

The Construction Services Manager will directly perform a variety of new construction, skilled building and grounds repair and restoration work, supervises construction crews of staff, and manages the work of licensed contractors. This is skills-based physical labor work, in all weather conditions, for a person at an intermediate level. The work performed will support MRCA’s operation of nature parks within greater Los Angeles and other MRCA efforts related to public access, open space conservation, habitat restoration, and urban park development.

Supervision

The position reports to the Division Chief. Assorted tasks may be supervised by the Deputy Executive Officer. The position supervises 6-12 other staff.  

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

JOB SPECIFICATIONS

Physical Demands

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to lift and carry items weighing up to 60 pounds for a distance up to 50 feet both indoors and outdoors;  frequently operate heavy equipment, hand tools, light equipment and power tools; constantly work in outdoor weather conditions; frequently move about work sites; communicate and exchange information; observe and document site conditions; transport equipment and tools between vehicles and work sites on a daily basis; and occasionally ascend/descend a ladder to access areas of work.

Required Hours and Location

The position will work out of the Los Angeles River Center and Gardens and will be required to travel to various other locations. Offices at the River Center are spread among multiple buildings and floors.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

The Position

The City of Fremont currently has a vacancy for the position of Park Maintenance Worker I. The Park Maintenance Worker I performs routine maintenance and repair work in the care of parks, recreation areas and equipment. The selected candidate will be part of a work crew assigned to a daily work detail.

This recruitment will establish a pool of candidates to fill regular and temporary vacancies.

Examples of Job Duties

All Assignments

• Responsible for vehicle and pedestrian traffic safety in work area.
• Manually transports heavy objects, supplies and materials.
• Operate ground maintenance equipment including a backhoe and tractor attachments, as well as a variety of hand and power tools.

Trees Assignment

• Prunes and trims designated street trees to shape and improve growth.
• Operates an aerial pruning platform, brush chipper, chain saw, stump grinder, leaf blower, and pole saw.
• Drives a one-ton truck to locations where work is to be performed.
• Clears areas of leaves, using rake or blower, and remove debris.

Central Parks and Sport Complex Assignment

• Maintains lawns, trees, shrubs, ground cover, picnic tables, benches, and sprinkler systems.
• Irrigates, cultivates, prunes, plants, and transplants a variety of turf, shrubs, trees and plants.

Outlying Parks Assignment

• Maintains lawns, trees, shrubs, ground cover, picnic tables, benches, and sprinkler systems.
• Maintains and make minor repairs to playground/picnic equipment, picnic areas and athletic fields.
• Operates mowing equipment in parks and athletic fields.

Special Assignments

• Performs general painting, plumbing and carpentry.
• Maintains, repairs and renovates irrigation system controllers, valves, pipes, and related components.

The City of Belmont is seeking a Pool Manager / Senior Lifeguard to supervise the Summer Aquatics Program at the Carlmont High School Aquatics Center.

 

• Must hold current Lifeguard Training, CPR/AED and First Aid Certificates. With proof of payment, the City will reimburse you for the cost of the lifeguard certification training at the end of the aquatics season.
