 THE POSITION  

The Community Development and Transportation Department (CDT) is seeking a value-driven team player to fill the position of Planning Intern. This internship provides an excellent opportunity for an enthusiastic college level student seeking broad experience within a dynamic City Planning Division. The Planning Division of the Community Development and Transportation Department administers City Council policies contained in the General Plan, Zoning Ordinance, and other plans and ordinances. In addition, the Division establishes new and amended rules governing land use and urban design for adoption by City Council from the platform of the General Plan. The Division provides staff, professional service, and administrative support relating to the development, improvement, and preservation of affordable housing opportunities.

The Planning Intern will assist with a number of projects and efforts throughout the Division, which may include:

• Shadowing and assisting Planning staff during counter hours
• Maintaining a database of Planning permit records and files to serve an online permit viewing tool;
• Conducting research for various strategic planning studies that could include: Central Redwood City Master Plan, an Accessory Dwelling Unit Showcase, and Historic Preservation Ordinance;
• Investigating opportunities for increasing public involvement in Planning Division activities;
• Investigating opportunities for new methods of communicating with the public using social media, videos, and newsletters
• Preparing updates to documents, forms, handouts and other materials;
• Other appropriate tasks as needed.

About the Position: The Planning Department is seeking two interns who are interested in learning about open space conservation and planning for ecologically sensitive recreation. Their responsibilities may include researching and compiling project information, supporting with community and stakeholder engagement, assisting with environmental review and documentation, researching new programs and initiatives, conducting field surveys and data collection, and using computer-based systems such as GIS, Microsoft Excel and Adobe Illustrator for analysis of data and preparation of documents regarding Midpen lands and facilities. The interns will work as a team and individually on assignments, including opportunities for field work to gain experience in data collection techniques and tools and on-the-job training in planning research, analysis, and written communication.  The expected start date for the interns is on or after July 8, 2024. We have limited flexibility to change the start date.

Basic Requirements: Internships are open to applications from current students or recent graduates (within the last 12 months). Successful candidates will have a background in the natural sciences, park/open space management, land use/environmental planning, GIS/geography, biology, ecology, or another related field; and experience with field data collection techniques. This internship requires strong organizational and analytical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently and with a team. Experience with MS Outlook, MS Word and Excel, ArcGIS software, GPS equipment, Microsoft Excel, and Apple iPads is desired, and familiarity with Midpen preserves/trails as well as local flora, fauna, and natural history are a plus.   Possession of or ability to obtain a valid California driver’s license is required. Must possess the ability to lift, carry, push and pull materials and objects weighing up to 25 pounds.

Working Conditions: This position will report to the Planning Department at the Administrative Office in Los Altos, California.  Midpen offers a hybrid office/telecommute work environment for this position, which will be divided between onsite work, field visits, and limited home office work.  Fieldwork is conducted in rural or mountainous Midpen open space areas, which may involve working alone or with another intern in wildland areas, traversing rough difficult terrain sometimes with poison oak and dense vegetation, and carrying equipment weighing up to 25 pounds. This is a temporary position working 20 – 40 hours per week, which will extend up to a total of 950 hours over a 6-9 month period. This is a non-benefited position.

The City of East Palo Alto is seeking an outgoing, collaborative, responsible Police Records Clerk I (classification title Police Records Clerk I/II. At this time, we are only seeking a level I. VEHICLE ABATEMENT OFFICER - TEMPORARY (Approximately 20 hours per week)

The City is now accepting applications for the position of Vehicle Abatement Officer (Temporary) in the Police Department. Under supervision, this position will respond to complaints from the public related to abandoned vehicles; enforce municipal and vehicle codes, and parking regulations; maintain records; and perform other duties as assigned. This is a non-sworn classification responsible for enforcing parking regulations, identifying, marking and tagging abandoned vehicles, and arranging for their removal.

The City of Mill Valley is seeking a self-directed problem- solver with an entrepreneurial spirit, high standards of excellence, and demonstrated commitment to public service and program development.

Under the direction of the Recreation Supervisor, the Recreation Coordinator II – Aquatics Safety manages the City’s Aquatics lifeguards and scheduling, including lap swim, water-walking, lifeguard certification, community CPR/First Aid classes and JR Lifeguard program.  This position also supervises all lifeguards, senior lifeguards and provides key assistance to the Recreation Supervisor on all related matters (works closely with Recreation Coordinator I- Aquatics programs to support division goals and activities).

The Aquatics & Fitness Center is a 7-day a week operation.

Recreation Coordinator II schedule may include Saturdays and Sundays and is subject to change depending on facility and supervisor needs. 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

• Recruit, hire, manage, train, schedule, audit, discipline and evaluate staff, contractors, interns, and volunteers.
• Schedule and provide regular in-service training for aquatics staff.
• Schedule and provide regular class and certification offerings necessary to staff for the proper operation of a public pool facility.
• Manage and develop the swim lesson program to balance and meet the needs of the community and the goals of the Department.
• Plan, develop and implement programs and events.
• Evaluate the progress and effectiveness of scheduling and programming utilizing measurable outcomes.
• Coordinate with local police and fire agencies for emergency response protocols.
• Assist in the development of policies, procedures, contracts, and manuals for facility users and staff.
• Work with local organizations, businesses, school personnel, parents, and community members in developing recreational programs and activities.
• Maintain all personal certifications and be available to lifeguard, teach swim lessons, and otherwise supplement line staff when needed.
• Provide assistance and guidance to facility users, anticipate and resolve problems, provide quality customer service.
• Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.

THE POSITION:     

Under the direction of the Pool Manager, the Assistant Pool Manager is responsible for assigned aquatic program areas, and acts as Pool Manager during the Pool Manager’s absence. The Assistant Manager assists in the direction and supervision of the staff and programs at the facility. This is an at-will, intermittent, part-time, hourly position. Work a flexible work schedule, which may include evening, weekdays, weekends and holidays

EXAMPLE OF DUTIES:

Duties may include, but are not limited to the following:

• Acts as Pool Manager in the absence of same.
• Assist with pool staff assignments and scheduling.
• Perform lifesaving practices and standards according to accepted industry standards.
• Assist with training and supervision of staff and volunteers on assigned duties.
• Meet program goals and objectives, collect and maintain relevant statistical records and data.
• Acts in capacity of pool lifeguard.
• Assist in maintaining on-site security and safety of participants, staff, and others in the pool area, preparation and maintenance of incident records.
• Assist in organization, teaching and evaluation of swim lessons and pool activities.
• Enforce City and program rules and guidelines.
• Assist Pool Manager to monitor correct completion of required paperwork.
• Attend pertinent staff meetings as required during the season.
• Perform other program-related duties as assigned.

THE POSITION:

The ideal candidate for Police Officer will be an individual with a high commitment to customer service, a proven record of integrity, and the ability to work comfortably in a small-town atmosphere enjoyed by the residents of Atherton.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Must possess a valid California Class C Driver’s license and have a satisfactory driving record; POST certification to include demonstrated firearms proficiency and qualification; complete a comprehensive background investigation including a polygraph, psychological, and medical examination. 

TYPICAL DUTIES:

Applicants must be able to apply the knowledge and skills required of a sworn police officer, and display the ability to perform the following: patrol the Town in an assigned area, individually or as part of a team; provide information, directions and assistance to the public in a variety of situations; take reports and assist the public with complaints; observe, monitor and control routine and unusual traffic situations; stop motorists for various vehicle code violations, and issue traffic citations or give verbal warnings; make arrests for criminal offenses; serve warrants and subpoenas; transport individuals for medical clearance and booking at the County facility; be available to work a wide range of schedules that may include weekends, holidays, and night shifts.

COMPENSATION PACKAGE:

The current monthly salary for these positions ranges depending on the job title and experience.

Police Trainee - $8709.15 per month;  Police Officer - $10,538.83 - $12,810.01.

Benefits include California Public Employee Retirement System (CalPERS), medical, dental and vision insurance; Educational Assistance Plan (EAP); sick leave incentive and conversion plan, deferred compensation.

About the Opportunity

We currently have an exciting opportunity for full-time Senior Planner to join our team in Millbrae, San Mateo County.  

Your key responsibilities are:

• Managing highly complex projects on a wide range of current and advance planning topics such as mixed-use developments, implementing and updating the City’s Specific Plans
• Researching and preparing complex reports regarding long-range planning policy topics, including but not limited to, General Plan, Specific Plan, municipal code amendments, rezoning requests, and environmental review
• Making presentations to the City Council, Planning Commission, community groups, and outside agencies
• Participating in the review of complex development proposals for conformance to City standards
• Resolving disputes between the City, developers, and property owners

More About You

Education: Graduation from a four-year college or university with major course work in city or regional planning, urban planning, public policy, or a closely related field. Master’s degree in a related field is highly desirable.

Experience: Five (5) years of increasingly professional work experience in municipal planning. Two (2) years of experience can be substituted by a Master’s degree.

Licenses: Possession of a valid California Driver’s License and a satisfactory driving record
