The City of San Mateo is currently taking applications for the position of Dispatcher I.

Experience:

Some telephone or dispatch experience is highly desirable.

Education:

Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade.

License or Certificate:

Verification of successful completion of the P.O.S.T. Entry-Level Dispatcher Selection Test Battery Examination with a minimum passing "T-Score" of 48 or higher or verification of successful completion of a CritiCall Examination with a minimum passing score of 50 or higher. 

Possession of, or ability to attain, a POST (Peace Officer Standards & Training) Written Examination Certificate

Currently Dispatcher’s hours are scheduled under the 4-10 work schedule.  Employees work ten hours per day, four days per week and shift work is required.  Work schedules will vary and overtime may be required.

The City of San Bruno is currently accepting applications for Public Safety Dispatcher, Per Diem candidates. 

The Position 

The San Bruno Police Department is recruiting for Public Safety Dispatchers. The San Bruno Police Department has a long-standing tradition of small-town service with big-city dedication to public safety.  Public Safety Dispatchers are responsible for public safety dispatch and related records management activities. This position operates on a 24-hour, 365 days per year basis, and may be assigned to either a day, swing, or graveyard shift on a regular, rotational basis that includes nights, weekends, and holidays.  Public Safety Dispatchers perform a wide range of duties involving radio, telephone, and computers, applying various procedures and codes. Dispatchers receive and transmit emergency and non-emergency telephone and radio traffic as well as process communication reports, records, and radio logs, while maintaining a high level of confidentiality.  Dispatchers may also support the Police Department by performing clerical tasks, training, assisting with fingerprinting, and being accountable for financial transactions.  This position is integral in supporting the goals and objectives of the City and Police Department.   

Essential Duties 

• Receives and transmits emergency telephone and radio traffic.   

• Maintains and processes a variety of communications reports, records and radio logs. 

• Operates a dispatch console, uses Computer Aided Dispatch (C.A.D.) System and other computer programs to process information and records. 

• Maintains a high level of confidentiality. 

• Performs collateral duties including a variety of related clerical tasks: assisting in preparation of work schedules; training and evaluating performance of new employees; conducting training sessions; assisting in fingerprinting and jail operations, which may include searching prisoners; and is accountable for handling cash, bond, and check transactions.  

• Plans, organizes, and directs dispatching and related activities on an assigned shift. This may include preparing schedules and prioritizing work; observing work performed by Dispatcher I employees to ensure compliance with standards; approving time off; conducting employee evaluations; and providing effective recommendations on personnel matters. 

• Prepares and maintains training and procedure manuals.  As required, prepares special reports, and undertakes projects for Management Staff.  

• May act as Records/Dispatcher Supervisor in their absence. 

• Maintains liaison with other Department Divisions, City Departments, and other law enforcement and emergency response agencies. 

• Maintains various C.A.D and Record Management Files. 

• Performs related duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications 

 Must be able to pass an extensive background investigation. 

Education 

• Possession of a high school diploma or GED equivalent. Additional related college course work or degree preferred. 

Experience 

• Completion of a probationary period in a public safety agency. 

Certificates and Licenses 

• Must possess and maintain a valid California Driver’s License, Class C with a good driving record. 

• Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Basic Dispatch Certificate is required.  

Special Requirements 

• Possess excellent vision and hearing skills, with ability to sit, talk, type, hear, and walk for extended periods of time as well as lift or move up to twenty-five (25) pounds.

Police Officer Trainee

The City of Lincoln is accepting applications for the position of Refuse Truck Driver II in the Solid Waste division of the Public Works department. Under general supervision, this position performs the full array of duties in the Solid Waste division, including maintenance, operating collection vehicles and refuse equipment operation. This job classification is represented by the Classified, Local 39 employee group; the probation period is 12 months.

Open positions may be filled as regular/full-time or seasonal/part-time.  Seasonal positions are limited to 999 hours per fiscal year and are unbenefited, and may become regular/full-time positions, dependent upon the future needs of the department.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

The Refuse Truck Driver II is the journey-level class responsible for a wide variety of maintenance and refuse collection tasks. This classification is distinguished from the next higher classification of Senior Refuse Truck Driver in that the latter performs the more complex assignments and lead responsibilities. 

SUPERVISION RECEIVED/EXERCISED

This position receives general supervision from the Solid Waste division’s Public Services Supervisor. May exercise technical and functional supervision over assigned staff.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Include but are not limited to the following:

• Performs general maintenance, repair, construction, equipment operation and installation work in refuse collection.
• Operates a variety of collection vehicles and equipment including front, rear and side loaders in the collection and transportation of residential and commercial refuse; drives to landfill site when vehicle is full and unloads material; evaluates and updates assigned routes; cleans, maintains and inspects assigned vehicles; maintains daily logs.
• Demonstrates a full understanding of applicable policies, procedures and work methods associated with assigned duties; may provide training to lower level staff; responds to questions and concerns from the general public; provides information as is appropriate and resolves public service complaints.
• Establishes positive working relationships with representatives of community organizations, state/local agencies, City management and staff, and the public.

PHYSICAL, MENTAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL WORKING CONDITIONS

Position requires sitting, standing, walking on level and slippery surfaces, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, stooping, squatting, crouching, grasping and making repetitive hand movement in the performance of daily duties. The position also requires both near and far vision when inspecting work and operating assigned equipment. The need to lift, carry and push tools, equipment and supplies weighing 25 pounds or more is also required. Additionally, the incumbent in this outdoor position works in all weather conditions including wet, hot and cold. The incumbent may use cleaning and lubricating chemicals, pesticides or herbicides which may expose the employee to fumes, dust and air contaminants. The nature of the work also requires the incumbent to climb ladders, use power and noise producing tools and equipment, operate hydraulic aerial devices, drive motorized vehicles and heavy equipment, work in heavy vehicle traffic conditions and often work with constant interruptions.

KNOWLEDGE/ABILITIES/SKILLS

The following are a representative sample of the KAS’s necessary to perform essential duties of the position.

Knowledge of:  Practices, techniques and materials used in maintenance, construction and repair of streets, buildings, parks and water treatment facilities; knowledge of the City street system; applicable federal, state and local laws, codes and regulations; operating characteristics and safety requirements for operation of trucks, refuse vehicles and other heavy and light equipment; defensive driving; proper lifting procedures; methods and techniques for record keeping; basic principles of mathematics; occupational hazards and standard safety procedures.

Ability to:  Perform maintenance, repair and installation of asphalt, signs, concrete, water mains and storm drains; drive and operate trucks and heavy construction equipment; respond to issues and concerns from the community; interpret, explain and apply applicable laws, codes and regulations; operate a variety of construction equipment, vehicles and power and hand tools; perform heavy manual labor for extended periods of time; work at substantial heights; respond to after-hours call-outs if assigned; organize, prioritize and follow-up on work assignments; work independently and as part of a team; make sound decisions within established guidelines; analyze a complex issue, and develop and implement an appropriate response; follow written and oral directions; observe safety principles and work in a safe manner; communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; establish and maintain effective working relationships.

Skill to:  Safely and effectively operate a variety of maintenance equipment, tools and materials.

ABOUT THE POSITION

(Lateral applicants that are currently employed as a Public Safety Dispatcher (non-probationary) do not need to submit proof of test scores, however a California POST Dispatcher Academy Certificate is required.)
• Completion of college-level coursework is highly desirable

Certificates:

• Possession of a typing certificate with a minimum of 50 wpm dated within one year of the application date must be included as an attachment.
• Possession of Basic P.O.S.T. Dispatch Certificate is highly desirable and may be substituted for work experience.

This position will require the ability to work rotating shifts on an on-going basis, including irregular hours on short notice. This position will also be assigned a uniform to wear during work hours.
