Position: Program Leader I (Special Events)

Hours: 8-30 hours per week 

The City of Redwood City’s Parks, Recreation and Community Services (PRCS) Department is looking for people interested in working approximately 15-20 hours per week, working the special events programs operated by the Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department.  Incumbents will typically assist in setting up, monitoring, and breaking down the events all while providing excellent customer service to visitors.

Typical duties may include, but are not limited to the following: Follow event plan and execute assigned duties effectively and efficiently; monitor or manage interactive recreation areas which may include, but are not limited to, arts and crafts, organized games, sports, drama, social recreation, and music/singing activities; supervise recreation participants insuring that proper safety precautions are observed in assigned activities; maintain and care for equipment as appropriate to help promote recreation activities effectively; assist in organizing, promoting, and managing special events; assist in setting up, monitoring, and breaking down the events; report to supervisors orally and in writing; complete assigned paperwork such as timecards, attendance reports and/or incident and accident reports; perform related duties and responsibilities as assigned.

This position requires weekday and weekend shifts, and may include both daytime and evening hours.  A person in this classification will work flexibly, up to 20 hours per week.  Hours and locations will vary across multiple community centers, and Building Attendants will be required to open and/or close the facility as needed.

DEFINITION: Under general supervision, instructs classes in swimming, enforces all rules and regulations pertaining to the safety and well-being of visitors and patrons. Perform related work as required.

• Lead all levels of swimming to all age groups.
• Provide corrective feedback and proper stroke technique.

TRAINING & EXPERIENCE: Must possess current ARC Water Safety Instruction certification. WSI certification required. CPR certification within 6 months of hire. ABA training is a desired skill. 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be able to lift 50 lbs. and react quickly to emergencies.

PRE-EMPLOYMENT CONDITIONS: Candidates receiving a conditional job offer must pass a pre-placement fingerprint review. Candidates must be comfortable calling 911 in an emergency and providing care according to the level of training.

The After School Instructor will plan, prepare, and instruct recreation activities (Instructor Aides will assist). Activities may include art, cooking, dance, STEM activities and other program areas. Programs are designed for children ages 6-12 years of age (school grades 2nd to 6th). Job site placement: Brier, Cabrillo, or Grimmer Elementary.

Schedule

Program End Date: Monday, June 6, 2022

Instructor Aide Hours: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday: 2:30pm-6pm. Wednesday: 2pm-6pm.

Instructor Lead Hours: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday: 2:00pm-6pm. Wednesday: 1:30pm-6pm.

• Must be a minimum of 18 years of age.
• At least one year's experience working with children in an academic or recreation setting.
• Must be willing and able to work days, nights, weekends, and holidays as required.
• High school diploma or equivalent.

JOB DESCRIPTION

Instruct children and adults (primarily 5-12 years of age) in beginning to intermediate sports camps or programs, such as Badminton, Basketball, Baseball, Cricket, Football, Softball, Soccer, Tennis, etc. Class content should provide basic and/or more advanced game mechanics, strategies, and the rules of sports, depending on the student level of skill. Class must emphasize the importance of good sportsmanship and team play. The goal is to have fun and develop a skill.

• Prepare area for specific sport (i.e. setup gym or sports field, assure all equipment is available, etc.)

A Program Specialist will plan, prepare and instruct recreation activities. Activities may include art, cooking, dance, pre-school program and other program areas. Programs are designed for children ages 4-17 (primarily 5-12) years of age.

Art programs may include drawing, painting, pastels, ceramics, crafts, sculpture, photography, weaving, printing, calligraphy, quilting, anime/magna, cartooning, clowning, and theater.

Cooking programs may include instruction on safety, using proper equipment and supplies and creativity.

Dance programs may include ballet, tap, jazz, hip-hop, ballroom, folkloric, salsa, and rhythmic international styles.

Pre-school programs for classes for children ages 12 months to 6 years.

• Different program areas will have different skills and knowledge requirements for the position; check with Recreation Supervisor. (For example: 6 ECE unites required for pre-school instructor)
• One school year teaching experience
• At least one year's experience working with children in an academic setting
• Must be willing and able to work days, nights, weekends, and holidays as required

JOB DESCRIPTION  

The Program Coordinator for is a unique position that is primarily responsible for planning and coordination of all aspects of the ASES funded After School Academy (ASA) program. ASA provides students in grades 1st through 6th a safe space for expanded learning. Every day students have the opportunity to make social connections, experience enriching activities, and receive academic assistance. Students socialize and connect with our team and their peers daily. ASA supports students every school day immediately after school until 6pm. Our goal is to improve student’s social, emotional, and academic potential through community, education, recreation, and enrichment.

• Coordinate all aspects of a After School Academy program
• Establish and maintain program records and computer databases
• Supervise and assign programming tasks to instructors and volunteers
• Maintain regular communication with school principals, teachers, and parents regarding student needs

• May work independently or in a team environment depending on program requirements

• Must possess one of the following: forty-eight (48) college semester units, AA Degree or higher
• Relevant technical skill, education, experience or expertise
• Experience assisting with implementation of children and/or youth programs and activities.
• Ability to establish and maintain productive relations and positive attitude toward others
• Excellent written and verbal skills
• Excellent organizational and supervisory skills, be resourceful, flexible and able to work both alone or as a team member
• Must be reliable and be able to provide transportation
• Available to work Monday through Friday, 12:00pm-6:00pm schedule.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

• Bachelor’s degree with teaching experience preferred
• Experience in implementation and programming of ASES grant funded programs
• Ability to frequently interpret and translate a language other than the English language among students, parents and school-based staff members

THE POSITION:
The purpose of this program is to augment full-time staffing in the City of Lincoln Firefighting program, but mostly the intent is to provide opportunity to develop the skills and abilities necessary for a candidate to gain employment in the fire services industry. The non-sworn Reserve Firefighter will gain the valuable work experience needed to obtain the California State Firefighter I certification. The City of Lincoln will benefit from producing well trained reservists who assist the department with the gained skills, knowledge and abilities. The Reserve Firefighter will receive on-going training.
