 THE POSITION  

The Community Development and Transportation Department (CDT) is seeking a value-driven team player to fill the position of Planning Intern. This internship provides an excellent opportunity for an enthusiastic college level student seeking broad experience within a dynamic City Planning Division. The Planning Division of the Community Development and Transportation Department administers City Council policies contained in the General Plan, Zoning Ordinance, and other plans and ordinances. In addition, the Division establishes new and amended rules governing land use and urban design for adoption by City Council from the platform of the General Plan. The Division provides staff, professional service, and administrative support relating to the development, improvement, and preservation of affordable housing opportunities.

The Planning Intern will assist with a number of projects and efforts throughout the Division, which may include:

• Shadowing and assisting Planning staff during counter hours
• Maintaining a database of Planning permit records and files to serve an online permit viewing tool;
• Conducting research for various strategic planning studies that could include: Central Redwood City Master Plan, an Accessory Dwelling Unit Showcase, and Historic Preservation Ordinance;
• Investigating opportunities for increasing public involvement in Planning Division activities;
• Investigating opportunities for new methods of communicating with the public using social media, videos, and newsletters
• Preparing updates to documents, forms, handouts and other materials;
• Other appropriate tasks as needed.

About the Position: The Planning Department is seeking two interns who are interested in learning about open space conservation and planning for ecologically sensitive recreation. Their responsibilities may include researching and compiling project information, supporting with community and stakeholder engagement, assisting with environmental review and documentation, researching new programs and initiatives, conducting field surveys and data collection, and using computer-based systems such as GIS, Microsoft Excel and Adobe Illustrator for analysis of data and preparation of documents regarding Midpen lands and facilities. The interns will work as a team and individually on assignments, including opportunities for field work to gain experience in data collection techniques and tools and on-the-job training in planning research, analysis, and written communication.  The expected start date for the interns is on or after July 8, 2024. We have limited flexibility to change the start date.

Basic Requirements: Internships are open to applications from current students or recent graduates (within the last 12 months). Successful candidates will have a background in the natural sciences, park/open space management, land use/environmental planning, GIS/geography, biology, ecology, or another related field; and experience with field data collection techniques. This internship requires strong organizational and analytical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently and with a team. Experience with MS Outlook, MS Word and Excel, ArcGIS software, GPS equipment, Microsoft Excel, and Apple iPads is desired, and familiarity with Midpen preserves/trails as well as local flora, fauna, and natural history are a plus.   Possession of or ability to obtain a valid California driver’s license is required. Must possess the ability to lift, carry, push and pull materials and objects weighing up to 25 pounds.

Working Conditions: This position will report to the Planning Department at the Administrative Office in Los Altos, California.  Midpen offers a hybrid office/telecommute work environment for this position, which will be divided between onsite work, field visits, and limited home office work.  Fieldwork is conducted in rural or mountainous Midpen open space areas, which may involve working alone or with another intern in wildland areas, traversing rough difficult terrain sometimes with poison oak and dense vegetation, and carrying equipment weighing up to 25 pounds. This is a temporary position working 20 – 40 hours per week, which will extend up to a total of 950 hours over a 6-9 month period. This is a non-benefited position.

The San Rafael Public Library is accepting applications for Substitute Librarians and Substitute Library Assistants to work in our San Rafael Public Libraries, including Downtown (1100 E Street), Pickleweed (50 Canal Street), and Northgate (5800 Northgate Drive, Ste. 083).  We are looking for people who are available on call, weekends, or other limited shifts.  This is a great opportunity for those interested in working at both a downtown and neighborhood branch libraries, as well as those excited by providing library services to a diverse community.  These are temporary positions, limited to 1,000 hours worked within a fiscal year (July 1 thru June 30) and receive no City benefits.

Substitute Librarians perform professional-level library public service work, including answering reference questions, providing readers’ advisory, providing technical assistance, and presenting programs (as needed).

Substitute Library Assistants perform circulation tasks such as checking materials in and out, and work at the public service desk, assisting patrons with basic requests including answering simple questions, creating new patron accounts, and referring patrons to other staff for more complex questions. 

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Substitute Librarians:

• Knowledge of Library Services and reference materials; readers advisory; professional practices and techniques of library science; and on-line library systems and information resources.
• Masters in library science issued by a college or university accredited by the American Library Association is preferred.
• Ability to work and effectively communicate with a diverse range of patrons.
• Bilingual in Spanish desired.

Substitute Library Assistants:

• Knowledge of basic office practices and procedures, including the operation of standard office equipment; alphabetical, numerical, and topical filing systems; material organization and structure of libraries; including categories of materials and general arrangement; library technical services terminology and equipment including on-line databases.
• Experience working in public libraries preferred.
• Ability to work and effectively communicate with a diverse range of patrons.
• Bilingual in Spanish desired.

Under general supervision, a Police Officer is responsible for the performance of law enforcement duties to protect life and property in accordance with applicable laws, to carry out special assignments as necessary, and other related duties as assigned. A wide variety of assignments are available which include Patrol, Traffic, Narcotics, Detectives, Off-Road and Surface Street Motorcycle Patrol, Bike Patrol, Special Weapons Team, Crisis Negotiation Team, Canine, Background Investigations, School Liaison, Gang Suppression, Special Enforcement Section and Intelligence.

This position participates in a 4/10 work schedule. Must be available to work nights, weekends, and holidays.

Requirements:

Candidates must have completed a California P.O.S.T. Certified Police Academy. Must be 21 years of age as of the appointment date, high school graduate or G.E.D., (as recognized by the U.S. Department of Education), and U.S. citizen or a permanent resident alien who is eligible and has applied for citizenship.

Out-of-State Candidates:

The California Commission on Peace Officers Standards and Training (POST) will conduct an evaluation of all out-of-state training. POST is the sole authority on applicable training and determines whether the candidate must attend an abbreviated academy, or a regular police academy. If an academy is required, the candidate will be hired as a Police Officer Trainee. Upon completion of the academy, promotion will be made to Police Officer.

Selection Process:

All qualified applicants will be invited to appear before an Oral Appraisal Board. Applicants passing the Oral Board examination will be placed on the eligibility list based on their Oral Appraisal Board rankings. Prospective employees will be required to pass a physical agility examination and undergo a thorough background investigation including a medical, psychological, polygraph and drug/alcohol screening.

THE POSITION:

The ideal candidate for Police Officer will be an individual with a high commitment to customer service, a proven record of integrity, and the ability to work comfortably in a small-town atmosphere enjoyed by the residents of Atherton.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Must possess a valid California Class C Driver’s license and have a satisfactory driving record; POST certification to include demonstrated firearms proficiency and qualification; complete a comprehensive background investigation including a polygraph, psychological, and medical examination. 

TYPICAL DUTIES:

Applicants must be able to apply the knowledge and skills required of a sworn police officer, and display the ability to perform the following: patrol the Town in an assigned area, individually or as part of a team; provide information, directions and assistance to the public in a variety of situations; take reports and assist the public with complaints; observe, monitor and control routine and unusual traffic situations; stop motorists for various vehicle code violations, and issue traffic citations or give verbal warnings; make arrests for criminal offenses; serve warrants and subpoenas; transport individuals for medical clearance and booking at the County facility; be available to work a wide range of schedules that may include weekends, holidays, and night shifts.

COMPENSATION PACKAGE:

The current monthly salary for these positions ranges depending on the job title and experience.

Police Trainee - $8709.15 per month;  Police Officer - $10,538.83 - $12,810.01.

About the Opportunity

We currently have an exciting opportunity for full-time Senior Planner to join our team in Millbrae, San Mateo County.  

Your key responsibilities are:

• Managing highly complex projects on a wide range of current and advance planning topics such as mixed-use developments, implementing and updating the City’s Specific Plans
• Researching and preparing complex reports regarding long-range planning policy topics, including but not limited to, General Plan, Specific Plan, municipal code amendments, rezoning requests, and environmental review
• Making presentations to the City Council, Planning Commission, community groups, and outside agencies
• Participating in the review of complex development proposals for conformance to City standards
• Resolving disputes between the City, developers, and property owners

More About You

Education: Graduation from a four-year college or university with major course work in city or regional planning, urban planning, public policy, or a closely related field. Master’s degree in a related field is highly desirable.

Experience: Five (5) years of increasingly professional work experience in municipal planning. Two (2) years of experience can be substituted by a Master’s degree.

Licenses: Possession of a valid California Driver’s License and a satisfactory driving record

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

A typical way of gaining the knowledge, skills, and abilities for this classification is:
Equivalent to graduation from college or university with a Master's degree in Library Science and three (3) years of experience as a professional librarian. Progressively responsible related experience may be substituted for the college coursework on a year-for-year basis.

Other requirements include the ability to travel to various locations within and outside the City of Berkeley to meet the program's needs and to fulfill the job responsibilities. When driving on City business, maintenance of a valid California driver's license and satisfactory driving record is required. Must be able to work evenings and weekends.

In addition to the qualifications above, the ideal candidate will have lead or supervisory experience.
