THE TRAINEE POSITION:

Position Details

Under close supervision, maintain constant watch over a public swimming pool facility to enforce regulations and prevent accidents, assist swimmers in distress and provide emergency and routine first aid. Create a safe and positive atmosphere for all participants and perform basic facility maintenance duties.

 

Examples of Duties

• Actively scan the pool, deck and locker rooms for safety and potential hazards and address the situation properly to remedy it
• Recognize and respond to emergencies in accordance with the facility emergency action plan
• Know and enforce all facility rules, policies, and procedures while providing a safe and enjoyable environment for all patrons
• Perform daily inspections or equipment and facility; correct and/or report any and all unsafe conditions to supervisor
• Teach swim lessons and aquatic classes to a variety of skill and age levels; evaluate participants according to program outlines and goals

Working Conditions

Work is at the Aquatics Center at San Bruno Park and is performed both indoors and out, with exposure to heat, sun, water, noise, dust, pollens and chemicals/cleaning agents used in an aquatics complex. There is potential for slip hazards when working near water and exposure to blood borne pathogens when rendering first aid. Working hours will include evenings, weekends, and holidays.

Physical Demands

Supplemental Position Information:

Part-time temporary employees serve in an at-will capacity and understand that service with the City may be dismissed at any time. This position does not provide any benefits, apart from paid sick leave. In accordance with the Healthy Workplaces, Healthy Families Act of 2014, all temporary, part-time, and seasonal employees, who on or after July 1, 2015, work in California for 30 or more days within a year from the commencement of employment are entitled to paid sick leave for prescribed purposes.  Employees will accrue one hour of paid sick leave for every 30 hours worked and are entitled to use accrued sick days beginning on the 90th day of employment. Employees may use up to 24 hours (or 3 days) of accrued sick leave in each year of employment.

SALARY AND HOURS: 

$ 18.83 - $ 19.77 - $ 20.76 - $ 21.79 - $ 22.88 per hour.  This is a part-time position with paid sick leave available.  Initial appointments are generally made at the first step of this five-step scale.  Hours will range from 5 to 15 hours per week during the academic school year and 20-25 hours per week during camp seasons.  Hours are generally scheduled during the following times, with additional hours available for special events:

Youth Program

            2:00 PM – 6:00 PM Monday through Friday (Academic school year)

8:00 AM – 6:00 PM Monday through Friday (Summer, Winter and Spring Camp)

Applications will be screened, and a limited number of the most qualified candidates will be invited to participate in the examination process, which may consist of an oral panel interview, written exercise, department interview, or in the form of a practical demonstration of skill and ability, or any combination of these.  A passing score of 70% is required to make the eligibility list.  Recommendations for appointment from this list will be made to the Parks and Recreation Director, under the deciding direction of Recreation Coordinator.  Depending on the number of applicants, this process may be altered.  Prior to appointment, a background check, including fingerprinting for submission to the Department of Justice must be completed, as well as TB screening.

ABOUT THE POSITION

In working with the Youth and Teen Unit individuals will have the opportunity to be a part of a team of dedicated Program leaders who are passionate about the community and inspiring youth to reach their full potential.   The City of Redwood City is providing after school program opportunities for youth at the Sandpiper Community Center in Redwood City. The City is looking for highly motivated program leaders to assist with academic support, and planning, organizing a variety enrichment activities. This position will report directly to the Recreation and Community Services Program Coordinator and will work approximately 20-28 hours per week, Monday - Friday during the school year (August 2023 to June 2024 depending on site assignment).   Typical duties may include, but are not limited to the following:

• Provide academic/homework support to encourage them to do their best.
• Plan, organize and conduct recreation enrichment activities for youth.
• Encourage students to engage in a variety of health and enrichment activities and community services projects.
• Be a positive role model to participants, insuring that participants are physically and emotionally safe.
• Assist in preparing activity calendars, lessons plans that create a vibrant and welcoming atmosphere for participants to excel.
• Supervise participants, insuring that proper safety precautions are observed in assigned activities.
• Maintain and care for equipment; prepare activity calendars, bulletin boards, lesson plans and/or coaching strategies as appropriate to help promote and plan activities effectively.
• Assist in organizing, promoting, directing and staffing; report to supervisors orally and in writing.
