 THE POSITION  

The Community Development and Transportation Department (CDT) is seeking a value-driven team player to fill the position of Planning Intern. This internship provides an excellent opportunity for an enthusiastic college level student seeking broad experience within a dynamic City Planning Division. The Planning Division of the Community Development and Transportation Department administers City Council policies contained in the General Plan, Zoning Ordinance, and other plans and ordinances. The Planning Intern will assist with a number of projects and efforts throughout the Division, which may include:

• Shadowing and assisting Planning staff during counter hours

• Conducting research for various strategic planning studies that could include: Central Redwood City Master Plan, an Accessory Dwelling Unit Showcase, and Historic Preservation Ordinance;

• Investigating opportunities for new methods of communicating with the public using social media, videos, and newsletters

About the Position: The Planning Department is seeking two interns who are interested in learning about open space conservation and planning for ecologically sensitive recreation. Their responsibilities may include researching and compiling project information, supporting with community and stakeholder engagement, assisting with environmental review and documentation, researching new programs and initiatives, conducting field surveys and data collection, and using computer-based systems such as GIS, Microsoft Excel and Adobe Illustrator for analysis of data and preparation of documents regarding Midpen lands and facilities. The interns will work as a team and individually on assignments, including opportunities for field work to gain experience in data collection techniques and tools and on-the-job training in planning research, analysis, and written communication.  The expected start date for the interns is on or after July 8, 2024. We have limited flexibility to change the start date.

Basic Requirements: Internships are open to applications from current students or recent graduates (within the last 12 months). Successful candidates will have a background in the natural sciences, park/open space management, land use/environmental planning, GIS/geography, biology, ecology, or another related field; and experience with field data collection techniques. This internship requires strong organizational and analytical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently and with a team. Experience with MS Outlook, MS Word and Excel, ArcGIS software, GPS equipment, Microsoft Excel, and Apple iPads is desired, and familiarity with Midpen preserves/trails as well as local flora, fauna, and natural history are a plus.   Possession of or ability to obtain a valid California driver’s license is required. Must possess the ability to lift, carry, push and pull materials and objects weighing up to 25 pounds.

Working Conditions: This position will report to the Planning Department at the Administrative Office in Los Altos, California.  Midpen offers a hybrid office/telecommute work environment for this position, which will be divided between onsite work, field visits, and limited home office work.  Fieldwork is conducted in rural or mountainous Midpen open space areas, which may involve working alone or with another intern in wildland areas, traversing rough difficult terrain sometimes with poison oak and dense vegetation, and carrying equipment weighing up to 25 pounds. This is a temporary position working 20 – 40 hours per week, which will extend up to a total of 950 hours over a 6-9 month period. This is a non-benefited position.

Selection Process

THE JOB

The Labor & Employee Relations Manager will play a crucial role in fostering positive relationships between the City and its workforce. The Air Conditioning Mechanic position is responsible for performing HVAC duties at more than 200 civic building sites across San Jose. The position will be responsible for performing the operational support, adjustment, troubleshooting, repair and preventative maintenance of heating, ventilating, air conditioning systems and auxiliary equipment.

Duties include but are not limited to:

• Repair of Rooftop package units, Air Handlers and split systems.
• Inspecting, repairing, performing preventative maintenance and routine testing of heating, cooling, air-conditioning, ventilating equipment and controls; and chiller and low pressure boiler maintenance.
• Servicing DX refrigerant and hydronic chilled/hot water distribution piping systems and components and HVAC units for
• commercial facilities.
• Repairing/replacing actuators, valves, compressors, controls, etc. in a refrigerant or hydronic piping system or HVAC unit.
• Using safe job practices, including wearing the proper PPE and making the job area safe before proceeding to work.
• Maintains cooling towers and sump basins as well as filtration systems.
• Responds to calls for emergency repair service.

• Replaces sub-assembly units; inspects safety cut controls.
• Performs other related work as required.

Incumbents are expected to work independently and exercise judgment and initiative. Incumbents should possess ability to lift, carry, push, and pull materials and objects averaging a weight of 50 pounds, or heavier weights, in all cases with the use of proper equipment.

Under general supervision, a Police Officer is responsible for the performance of law enforcement duties to protect life and property in accordance with applicable laws, to carry out special assignments as necessary, and other related duties as assigned. A wide variety of assignments are available which include Patrol, Traffic, Narcotics, Detectives, Off-Road and Surface Street Motorcycle Patrol, Bike Patrol, Special Weapons Team, Crisis Negotiation Team, Canine, Background Investigations, School Liaison, Gang Suppression, Special Enforcement Section and Intelligence.

This position participates in a 4/10 work schedule. Must be available to work nights, weekends, and holidays.

Requirements:

Candidates must have completed a California P.O.S.T. Certified Police Academy. Must be 21 years of age as of the appointment date, high school graduate or G.E.D., (as recognized by the U.S. Department of Education), and U.S. citizen or a permanent resident alien who is eligible and has applied for citizenship.

Out-of-State Candidates:

The California Commission on Peace Officers Standards and Training (POST) will conduct an evaluation of all out-of-state training. POST is the sole authority on applicable training and determines whether the candidate must attend an abbreviated academy, or a regular police academy. If an academy is required, the candidate will be hired as a Police Officer Trainee. Upon completion of the academy, promotion will be made to Police Officer.

Selection Process:

All qualified applicants will be invited to appear before an Oral Appraisal Board. Applicants passing the Oral Board examination will be placed on the eligibility list based on their Oral Appraisal Board rankings. Prospective employees will be required to pass a physical agility examination and undergo a thorough background investigation including a medical, psychological, polygraph and drug/alcohol screening.
