THE POSITION:

The Facilities Carpenter I is an entry level classification in the carpentry series. Carpenters in this class are assigned routine skilled carpentry tasks. Under the training concept of growing excellence in craft, positions allocated to the Facilities Carpenter II level which become vacant may reasonably be filled at the I level. 
 

The Facilities Carpenter II is responsible for performing a variety of skilled carpentry and related tasks in the construction, remodeling, repair, and maintenance of City facilities. This the journey level classification within the carpenter series. Incumbents at this level act with independence, handle "master" craftworker projects, and assume the more complex activities which would otherwise require the attention and coordination of the Facilities and Building Manager. 

 

 

Essential Duties

What you will do: 

Depending on assignment, duties may include but are not limited to the following:  
 

1. Remodels offices in City facilities. Takes down walls, doors and windows, reinstalls new walls and cuts in new doorways.

2. Installs, repairs and replaces doors, door closures, windows, floors, roofs, and other structural appurtenances.

3. Builds and repairs wooden fixtures and office furniture of all kinds.

4. Fabricates new cabinets, bookshelves and countertops.

5. Performs maintenance and repair work on all city buildings, rental units, and on private residences involving Police damage to the premises.

6. Rescreens screen doors and window screens.

7. Fabricates tack boards and bulletin boards.

8. May perform allied craft work in the course of maintaining City facilities.

9. Performs related work as necessary.

Facilities Carpenter I

Experience: Equivalent to completion of a regular carpentry apprenticeship.

Education: Equivalent to completion of the twelfth (12th) grade.

License: Possession and maintenance of a valid Class C California Driver's License.

 

Facilities Carpenter II

Experience: Two (2) years of experience performing duties comparable to those of a Facilities Carpenter I for the City of Hayward. 

Education: Equivalent to completion of the twelfth (12th) grade. 

License: Possession and maintenance of a valid Class C California Driver's License. 


SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Essential duties require the mental and/or physical work environment: work in variable indoor and outdoor conditions; tolerate exposure to outdoor elements in all weather conditions (e.g. heat, cold, and rain) throughout the year; be able to tolerate some exposure to noise, vibration, chemicals, moving objects, traffic, engine exhaust, dust, mechanical and electrical hazards, and odorous environments; frequently kneel, stoop, crouch, squat, climb, twist, and handle equipment; grasp, perform repetitive hand movements and fine coordination to prepare documents and data using a computer keyboard and mouse/trackball; sit for prolonged periods of time; stand, walk, reach, bend and safely lift and move equipment and materials weighing up to 75 pounds; converse by telephone, by email, in person, and be clearly understood; read and comprehend documents; interact with the public and all different levels of City staff in an effective and professional manner. Under general supervision, a Police Officer is responsible for the performance of law enforcement duties to protect life and property in accordance with applicable laws, to carry out special assignments as necessary, and other related duties as assigned. A wide variety of assignments are available which include Patrol, Traffic, Narcotics, Detectives, Off-Road and Surface Street Motorcycle Patrol, Bike Patrol, Special Weapons Team, Crisis Negotiation Team, Canine, Background Investigations, School Liaison, Gang Suppression, Special Enforcement Section and Intelligence.

This position participates in a 4/10 work schedule. Must be available to work nights, weekends, and holidays.

Requirements:

Candidates must have completed a California P.O.S.T. Certified Police Academy. Must be 21 years of age as of the appointment date, high school graduate or G.E.D., (as recognized by the U.S. Department of Education), and U.S. citizen or a permanent resident alien who is eligible and has applied for citizenship.

Out-of-State Candidates:

The California Commission on Peace Officers Standards and Training (POST) will conduct an evaluation of all out-of-state training. POST is the sole authority on applicable training and determines whether the candidate must attend an abbreviated academy, or a regular police academy. If an academy is required, the candidate will be hired as a Police Officer Trainee. Upon completion of the academy, promotion will be made to Police Officer.

Selection Process:

All qualified applicants will be invited to appear before an Oral Appraisal Board. Applicants passing the Oral Board examination will be placed on the eligibility list based on their Oral Appraisal Board rankings. Prospective employees will be required to pass a physical agility examination and undergo a thorough background investigation including a medical, psychological, polygraph and drug/alcohol screening.

Phase I Includes:

• 99 Yard Obstacle Course (time limit 25 seconds)
• Body Drag (165 pounds) (time limit 14 seconds)
• Chain Link Fence (time limit 10 seconds)
• Solid Fence (time limit 13.5 seconds)
• One Mile Run (time limit 10 minutes)

Phase II: For candidates progressing to the Chief’s Oral Interview process

• 1.5 Mile Run (time limit 15 minutes)
• 15 Military Style Push-ups without stopping

THE POSITION:

The ideal candidate for Police Officer will be an individual with a high commitment to customer service, a proven record of integrity, and the ability to work comfortably in a small-town atmosphere enjoyed by the residents of Atherton.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Must possess a valid California Class C Driver’s license and have a satisfactory driving record; POST certification to include demonstrated firearms proficiency and qualification; complete a comprehensive background investigation including a polygraph, psychological, and medical examination. 

 

TYPICAL DUTIES:

COMPENSATION PACKAGE:

The current monthly salary for these positions ranges depending on the job title and experience.

Police Trainee - $8709.15 per month;  Police Officer - $10,538.83 - $12,810.01.

The City of Berkeley invites you to apply for the position of Camp Maintenance Mechanic (Non-Career Intermittent) in the Parks, Recreation and Waterfront Department! In this role, you will have the opportunity to keep our camps running smoothly by performing both routine and heavy, physical work in the construction, maintenance, repair and cleaning of camp facilities. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

A typical way of gaining the knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position is: Equivalent to graduation from high school, and one (1) year of experience in construction and maintenance.

State of California Drinking Water Treatment Certifications (Grade 1 or 2) desirable. Must possess and maintain a valid California non-commercial (Class C) driver's license, and have a satisfactory driving record. Must possess sufficient strength and stamina to lift and carry objects weighing up to 80 pounds and be able to perform sustained heavy physical labor. Must be willing to work outdoors in all weather conditions and on off-hour shifts in emergency situations.

Licenses and Certifications:

• Possession of, or the ability to obtain, a valid Class C California driver’s license upon appointment.
• Possession of International Code Council (ICC) certification as a Combination Building Inspector.
• Newly hired Chief Building Official will possess a Chief Building Official (CBO) certification within one year.

The ideal candidate will possess a Chief Building Official (CBO) certification, a Plan Check certification, and the Certified Access Specialist (CASp) certification.

Selection Process
Applications will be reviewed for relevant education, experience, training and other job related qualifications. Based upon a review of employment applications received, a limited number of the qualified applicants will be invited to participate in the examination process.

The process will consist of an Oral Panel Interview (weighted 80%) and a written exercise (weighted 20%). An eligibility list will be established from those who pass the examination process with a score of 70% or higher. Current and future vacancies may be filled from this list. The list will remain in effect for at least one year unless exhausted sooner. 

The department will invite the most qualified candidates from the eligibility list to a final department interview. The Director of Community Development will make the hiring decision.
