The Lifeguard/Swim Instructor position may be assigned to the following areas:

Lifeguard

Under general supervision, the Lifeguard performs lifeguard duties in enforcing City public swimming pool rules and monitoring pool patron conduct; perform emergency rescue and lifesaving techniques.

Swim Instructor

Under general supervision, the Swim Instructor performs swim instructor duties in planning, coordinating and teaching swimming and water safety courses, enforcing City public swimming pool rules and monitoring pool patron conduct.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Lifeguard

• Enforce swimming pool rules and regulations, including ensuring orderly conduct by pool patrons.
• Assist in providing instruction for a variety of swimming classes for all ages and ability levels. Assist swimmers who are in distress and administer a variety of first aid and/or life saving techniques, as appropriate.
• Assist in maintaining pool areas in a safe and clean condition.
• Build and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers, other City employees and the public using principles of good customer service.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Swim Instructor

• Assist in providing instruction for a variety of swimming classes for all ages and ability levels.

The City of Berkeley invites you to apply for the position of Aquatics Specialist I in the Parks, Recreation and Waterfront Department! In this role, you will have the opportunity to provide instruction in swim and serve as a lifeguard at assigned swimming facilities. We're looking for a Supervising Public Health Nurse to manage programs in our Public Health Division! Join us in our mission to achieve health equity and optimal health for all people in Berkeley through systems change, service provision, and collaboration with community members and partners.

As a Supervising Public Health Nurse, you will have the opportunity to direct the Family Support Services Unit or the Communicable Disease Prevention and Control Unit. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Behavioral Health Clinician I:

Behavioral Health Clinician II:
At this level, Behavioral Health Clinicians handle more complex or difficult client cases. In addition to the responsibilities of a Behavioral Health Clinician I, incumbents at this level may lead teams conducting intake assessments and crisis intervention. 

Required Qualifications

Both positions require a master's degree from a recognized school of Social Work, Counseling, Psychiatric Nursing, or other Marriage and Family Therapy eligible discipline, or a doctorate degree in Psychology. 

Behavioral Health Clinician I:

Field placement of at least one (1) year in a medical, psychiatric, or community mental health setting

Registration as an Associate Marriage and Family Therapist (AMFT), Associate Clinical Social Worker (ACSW), and/or Associate Professional Clinical Counselor (APCC) with the State of California Board of Behavioral Sciences (BBS) OR a Registered Psychologist with the Board of Psychology.

Extra Help - Extra-help positions are short-term employment for up to 1040 hours which is equivalent to about six months; however, employment might end sooner depending on the needs of the hiring departments. Extra-help assignments are at-will and the employee is paid on an hourly basis. Some extra help positions are eligible for benefits under the Affordable Care Act. Medical Services Assistants II who are assigned to the clinics and perform advanced patient care duties as defined in the classification specification shall receive a differential of 6.2% in addition to all other compensation.
 

Examples Of Duties

Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Accurately take and record the condition, respiration, pulse, temperature and blood pressure of patients; record other pertinent information as observed or measured.
• Apply non-sterile dressings and administer non-medicated treatments under the supervision of a registered nurse, licensed physician, surgeon, podiatrist, nurse practitioner or physician assistant.
• Carry out rehabilitation procedures as directed by therapists; perform a range of motion body movement with/for patients; position and exercise patients.

Qualifications

Certification Requirement:

Bilingual Fluency:

THE POSITION:

DEFINITION: Under general supervision, assists instructor in swim classes, enforces all rules and regulations pertaining to the safety and well-being of visitors and patrons. This entry-level aquatics position is designed to give valuable training and orientation to the American Red Cross Learn-to-Swim Program, and the Mill Valley Aquatics Program for Individuals who desire to work in aquatics but don’t have required experience. • Supervise and coordinate the work of subordinate childcare staff.
• Monitor and order classroom supplies and materials as needed.

• Supervise and coordinate staff and children.
• Establish and maintain positive working relationships.  Work cooperatively to achieve program goals.
• Interact and communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, with children, parents, staff, host school and community members.
• Manage time, activities and resources effectively.
• Work as scheduled.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: 

• Completion of twelve (12) units of Early Childhood Education (ECE) courses.     
• One year working with children in a Preschool setting.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

• Department of Justice and FBI fingerprint clearance
• Prefer possession of a valid California Driver’s License

Must be able to perform physical activities such as but not limited to:  lifting or carrying children or heavy items (up to 40 lbs.) unassisted, reaching, bending, standing, or walking.  The employee is occasionally required to sit, climb or balance, twist, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.  Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
