The City of American Canyon Parks & Recreation Department invites energetic, creative and responsible individuals to apply for the position of Program Coordinator. Program Coordinators are part-time, temporary staff members who work under Recreation Coordinators to oversee and implement a wide range of recreation programming. Program Coordinators may be asked to provide recreation leadership, supervision, and assistance in various recreation programs, including day camp, youth and adult sports, special events and outdoor spaces.

This position is well-suited for applicants with experience as a Recreation Leader or Youth Leader, can work independently, and effectively lead staff members.

Being a Program Coordinator can include working shifts that are scheduled during early mornings, nights, weekends and holidays all year around.  This is a position that is considered temporary/part-time and employees are limited to no more than 980 hours per fiscal year.

Under general supervision, plans, organizes, coordinates, develops, implements, promotes and evaluates assigned program areas and provides lead direction to lower-level staff and volunteers. 

Examples of Duties

Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following: 

• Plan, organize, implement, and lead assigned program areas in one or more City departments.
• Assist in the development, recommendation and implementation of goals, objectives, policies, procedures and work standards for assigned program area.
• Monitor day-to-day operations of programs and events, including making site visits handling and resolving complaints.
• Formulate and organize program plans and schedules for seasonal and year-round activities related to program areas.
• Provide lead direction to staff in assigning and scheduling work.
• Train lower level staff and volunteers in program activities and ensure compliance with safety procedures.
• Review work area and ensure it is safe and appropriate for all employees and participants.
• Develop and coordinate program marketing efforts through news releases, posters, flyers, web pages, mailing lists and other methods.
• Monitor supplies and equipment for assigned programs; maintain adequate supply inventory; ensure equipment is operational and safe; advise supervisor of needed repairs or replacement.
• Prepare clear and comprehensive written reports as requested.
• Respond to citizen concerns and requests.
• Attend department meetings as requested.
• Answer the telephone and assist and register customers as needed.
• Perform related duties as assigned.

The Construction Services Manager will directly perform a variety of new construction, skilled building and grounds repair and restoration work, supervises construction crews of staff, and manages the work of licensed contractors. The Construction Services Manager is responsible for the management and completion of repair and improvement projects at a variety of park facilities and locations.

This is skills-based physical labor work, in all weather conditions, for a person at an intermediate level. The work performed will support MRCA’s operation of nature parks within greater Los Angeles and other MRCA efforts related to public access, open space conservation, habitat restoration, and urban park development.

The position reports to the Division Chief. Assorted tasks may be supervised by the Deputy Executive Officer. The position supervises 6-12 other staff.  

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

• Schedule and prioritize construction projects.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the job. The Construction Secretary will assist the Chief of Construction, Construction Services Manager and the Construction Project Analyst with administrative tasks within the division.

Supervision

The Urban Forestry Division of the City of Fremont has two paid internships available for immediate hiring.  Through a variety of tasks and duties, interns will gain well-rounded, first-hand work experience and observational knowledge in the fields of urban forestry management and municipal administration.

The Role

The role consists of assisting city staff in the preservation, maintenance, and sustainable growth of Fremont’s urban forest. Examples of division responsibilities include program administration, tree assessment, community outreach and education, grant management, data collection and analysis, contracts and vendor management, project management, as well as other related responsibilities.

Position Details:

Under general supervision, this position is assigned to perform a variety of duties to support the users of various indoor and outdoor City facilities and programs. The Recreation Specialist will oversee programs and rental activities. This includes opening and closing buildings, managing swimming pool patrons and activities, monitoring facility use including facility and guest safety during rentals, setting up tables and chairs for rentals, City programs and events, performing light janitorial and custodial duties, ensuring compliance of established rules and procedures for the use of facilities, and performing other duties as required. • Perform daily inspections or equipment and facility; correct and/or report any and all unsafe conditions to supervisor

• Must test negative for Tuberculosis within the past 2 years
•  Must be patient and courteous with all members of the public
• Be dependable and punctual

Working Conditions:

Work is assigned at both indoor and outdoor facilities, and may include exposure to unsanitary conditions, odors, cleaning chemicals, and some noise. The successful candidate must be able to work variable hours, including mornings, late evenings, holidays, and weekends.

Supplemental Position Information:

Part-time temporary employees serve in an at-will capacity and understand that service with the City may be dismissed at any time. This position does not provide any benefits, apart from paid sick leave. In accordance with the Healthy Workplaces, Healthy Families Act of 2014, all temporary, part-time, and seasonal employees, who on or after July 1, 2015, work in California for 30 or more days within a year from the commencement of employment are entitled to paid sick leave for prescribed purposes.  Employees will accrue one hour of paid sick leave for every 30 hours worked and are entitled to use accrued sick days beginning on the 90th day of employment. Employees may use up to 24 hours (or 3 days) of accrued sick leave in each year of employment.

THE POSITION:

Parks Maintenance Worker I:

• Operate a vehicle with trailer.
• Use basic hand and power tools common to groundskeeping.
• Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
• Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships.
• Operate a variety of power tools and equipment.

Parks Maintenance Worker II: (In addition to the requirements of Parks Maintenance Worker I)

• Operate hand and power mowers, edgers, saws, pruners, tractors, tractor attachments such as back hoes and loaders, sprayers, trucks, blowers, etc.
• Prune, plant, and irrigate turf, landscape and trees.
• Install, repair, and adjust landscape sprinkler systems.
• Identify plant disease, nutrient, watering and related problems.
• Perform basic carpentry and concrete work required for vandalism repair and park improvements.
• Maintain sanitary and safe swimming pool conditions including sampling and adding chemicals, and maintaining gas chlorine systems.
• Mix and apply pesticides and fertilizers.
• Ability to perform or learn to perform traffic control setups necessary to complete daily assignments.
• Ability to operate or learn to operate a computer and work-related software.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

• High school diploma or equivalent
• Able to read, speak and write English
• Incumbents assigned to this job classification are subject to Department of Transportation’s Drug and Alcohol Regulations if they possess a Class B driver’s license and opt to utilize the license on the job.

Parks Maintenance Worker I:

• Previous work experience involving groundskeeping, horticulture, and irrigation is preferred.

Parks Maintenance Worker II:

• Three years of work experience involving groundskeeping

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.  While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear.  The employee frequently is required to stoop, kneel, crouch, or drawl.  The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance and taste or smell.  The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts and outdoor weather conditions.  The noise level in the work environment is usually very loud.
