POLICE OFFICER

Trainee - $6,546 per month

Academy Graduate - $7,878 to $10,683 per month (up to $12,285 with incentives)

The City of Pleasant Hill is currently seeking applicants for Police Officer: Entry-Level Trainee and Academy Graduate. Police Officers can serve in patrol, traffic, investigations, and K-9 assignments. Other collateral opportunities include instructor positions (Firearms and Force Options Team), Regional SWAT, Mobile Field Force, 10851 Task Force, CSI, Regional Major Accident Investigation Team, Driving Team with firearms and force options team, Crisis Intervention Team (CIT), FBI Safe Streets Task Force, SET Team, Drone Team, Social Media Team, Community Resource Officer, School Resource Officer, and Field Training Officers. Specialty assignments may add an additional 5% pay. 

Officers work 12-hour shifts as part of a team concept. Shift schedules include 4-10 and 3-12, which may be changed periodically as job assignments may be rotated among patrol, traffic, and criminal investigation.  Night shifts include 5% additional pay. 

EDUCATION:

Entry Level Candidates - High school diploma and 60 units of college-level course work.

Academy Graduates (no sworn experience) - High school diploma and a minimum of 45 units of college-level course work, in addition to graduation from a P.O.S.T. basic academy.

Entry level and Academy Graduate candidates with an honorable discharge may be credited with up to 15 semester units for a minimum of 3 years of active duty in the U.S. Armed Services (Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines and Coast Guard).

THE POSITION / JOB DUTIES

The Police Public Service Assistant (PSA) III is assigned to the Police Department’s Equipment Room and provides daily support with the customer service and equipment room operations. Examples of job duties include:

· Issues and collects equipment, vehicles, and weapons to and from Police Department staff

· Maintains inventory and accounts for all equipment assigned to the Equipment Room

· Transports and coordinates repair of Police Department vehicles

· Identifies and communicates with Police and City staff, as well as outside vendors, to execute job duties

· Escorts outside vendors while they conduct their business inside the Department campus

· Pick-up and delivers equipment and supplies

· Assists with the general maintenance of the building

· Performs other duties as assigned

Salary Range for Police Recruit Trainees and Police Academy Attendees:  $6,863 - $8,342/month plus generous benefits

Police Academy Graduate: High school diploma or legal equivalent (GED) and completion of sixty (semester) college units or ninety (quarter) college units; and a valid State of California POST Basic Law Enforcement Academy Certificate dated within 24 months of application submission.  Your State of California POST Academy Certificate MUST be attached to application for consideration.

Police Officer – Lateral:  High school diploma or legal equivalent (GED) and completion of sixty (semester) college units or ninety (quarter) college units; and either a valid State of California POST Basic Certificate and currently work as a Police Officer in a California POST agency OR have worked in the job classification within one (1) year of application, and can show proof of successful completion of the California POST agency-specific field training program.  Qualifying documentation MUST be attached to application for consideration.

As a Moraga Police Officer, you will be required to respond to emergency and non-emergency calls for service; enforce laws and ordinances; monitor and control traffic; prevent crime; administer first aid when needed;  make arrests;  serve warrants and subpoenas;  interview victims and witnesses; interrogate suspects; process crime scenes for evidence; process and transport prisoners; investigate crimes and prepare comprehensive written reports; testify in court; present cases for prosecution to the District Attorney’s office; speak before public groups on job related topics and provide other services as needed.

This is a non-sworn, civilian training classification to be used while incumbent is attending a certified P.O.S.T. Basic Police Academy.  Incumbent in this classification receives the same employee benefits as Police Officers, with the exception of being placed in the “Miscellaneous” retirement category until successful completion of a designated police academy, and as a civilian employee, will not be covered by government code sections 4850 and 3300 through 3311.  Upon successful completion of an academy, incumbent shall be sworn as a Police Officer, placed in the safety retirement category and begin an 18-month probationary period as a Police Officer on the date of swearing in. 

Education: 

• High school graduate or its equivalent. 
• Completion of 30 semester (or equivalent quarter) units from an accredited college or university preferred. 

Physical Capabilities/Vision:

• Must be capable of performing the full range of work assigned to a Police Officer free from physical, mental or emotional restrictions, which would adversely impact job performance. 
• All vision must be corrected to 20/20.
• Must be free from color blindness and have a normal field of vision.

Hearing:

• Normal hearing acuity.

• Weight in proportion to height, age and frame.

Age: 

• Applicant must be 21 years of age minimum by completion of Police Academy.

Citizenship: 

• California Government Code Section 1031(a) requires that Police Officers be citizens of the United States.  California Government Code Section 1031.5 requires that permanent resident aliens who desire to be employed as Police Officers be eligible for and have applied for citizenship.

License:

• Possession of a valid California driver’s license issued by the Department of Motor Vehicles.
