THE POSITION: 
This position inspects plans or buildings and construction for compliance with structural building codes, laws and ordinances and provides training and working lead assistance to other inspectors on structural matters as required.

You are: 
The ideal candidate will have thorough knowledge of the California Building Codes, CalGreen Code and related codes and regulations, including the methods, materials, techniques and practices employed in building inspection industry. Additionally, the ideal candidate will have working knowledge of the principles and practices of organization, administration, the ability to manage complex projects through inspection skills; and organization and functions of the various trades, agencies and organizations involved in the construction process, in addition to being an outstanding person, who aspires to excellence in customer service and is a committed team player.

•  Building, housing, plumbing, mechanical and electrical codes with specialized knowledge of materials and standards to be applied in structural inspections.

• Perform the physical aspects of a field inspection.
• Effectively train and provide working lead assistance to building inspectors.
• Deal effectively, tactfully and professionally with co-workers, the general public, architects and engineers.
• Read and interpret building plans and specifications and enforce their application.
• Prepare clear and concise written reports.
• Research and study building codes, laws and ordinances.
• Perform moderate to heavy amounts of paper work.
• Work independently with minimal or no supervision.

You have: 
 Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying.  A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Experience:  
Four (4) years of experience dealing with code compliance considerations related to the structural elements of buildings.
OR
Two (2) years structural inspection experience involving major commercial or industrial installations.  

Education: 
Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade.                          
 
License:  
Possession of a Class C California Drivers License.

ICBO (International Conference of Building Officials) Certification as a structural and/or combination inspector is highly desirable, but not required.

ABOUT THE POSITION
The City of Gilroy is recruiting an undergraduate or graduate-level City Administration College Intern for the summer of 2024. This internship will provide a significant opportunity to gain experience and exposure and accumulate skills that are used daily in various city government programs that make substantial impacts to the community. These programs are in the areas of the City Clerks office, emergency management, economic development, public information and outreach, and other municipal administration programs and services.

VOLUNTEER WORK SCHEDULE

WHAT YOU WILL DO

The Transportation Supervisor is an important part of the City's transit team that provide services including the Auburn Loop fixed route and Auburn OnDemand ride share programs.

Under direction of the Public Works Director, Transit Manager or designee, the incumbent coordinates, supervises, assigns, reviews and participates in the work of staff responsible for Auburn Transit's daily operations; schedule drivers to ensure routes are completed in a safe and timely manner; ensures work quality and adherence to established policies and procedures including providing necessary training and ensuring re-certification of drivers as required; and operates a bus as necessary to cover shifts.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES

The following duties are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices.

• Plan, prioritize, assign, supervise, review, and participate in the work of staff responsible for Auburn Transit daily operations; perform regular road supervision, vehicle trial checks, and daily vehicle inspection monitoring.
• Establish schedules and methods for providing Auburn Transit services; schedule drivers to ensure routes are completed in a safe and timely manner; coordinate any changes to facilitate coverage for all shifts.
• Coordinates transportation needs for local schools and special events; prepares calendar of trips or special events to be incorporated into the bus timetable; identify resource needs; review needs with appropriate management staff; allocate resources accordingly.
• Provide an increasing level of customer service and satisfaction by providing service that is flexible, dependable, and consistent.
• Participate in the development of policies and procedures; monitor work activities to ensure compliance with established policies and procedures; make recommendations for changes and improvements to existing standards and procedures.
• Recommend and assist in the implementation of goals and objectives; implement approved policies and procedures.
• Participate in the selection of Bus Drivers; provide or coordinate staff training; issue manuals, bulletins and technical guides to improve services and operational activities; work with employees to correct deficiencies; implement discipline procedures.

• Coordinate maintenance for buses and allocate buses to be used on routes.
• Respond to the scene of transit vehicle accidents and passenger incidents; provide on the scene assistance to drivers and passengers.
• Investigate accidents and incidents; make prompt and accurate reports; review investigation with transit drivers and determine accident preventability and recommend appropriate corrective actions.
• Act as Safety Liaison with various agencies including police and emergency authorities as necessary.
• Provide regular informational and safety meetings.
• Perform a full range of customer relations; answer questions from the public relating to bus routes and schedule of pick-ups and drop-offs; issue bus passes.
• Work with local businesses to promote the use of Auburn Transit and fulfill the optimal service hours of the route.
• Operate a bus as necessary to cover shifts.
• Perform related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

DEFINITION:
Under general administrative direction of the City Manager, plans, directs, manages, and oversees the activities and operations of the Public Works Department including streets, utilities, water treatment and wastewater treatment, ensures all resources within each division are properly allocated and managed; provides long range planning for department programs, projects, and needs; coordinates assigned activities with other departments and outside agencies; and provides highly responsible and complex administrative support to the City Manager.

CLASS CHARACTERISTICS:
The Director of Public Works is considered a Department Director with responsibility for directing the activities of a Department within the City. Positions at this class level serve as a member of the City's senior management team and provide advice and counsel to the City Manager regarding strategic policy and problem solving issues relating to the assigned Department and the City overall. The incumbent is responsible for accomplishing the City's goals and objectives related to assigned program areas.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:

• Assumes full management responsibility for all Public Works Department services and activities including streets, utilities, water treatment, wastewater treatment.
• Manages the development and implementation of departmental goals, objectives, and priorities for each assigned service area; recommends and administers policies and procedures.

• Directs the activities and operations of the City's utilities, streets, and equipment maintenance programs; ensures maintenance activities are completed on time and within budget.
• Provides staff assistance to the City Manager; prepares and presents staff reports and other necessary correspondence.
• Represents the Public Works Department to other departments, elected officials, and outside agencies including community organizations; develops community resources; coordinates assigned activities with those of other departments and outside agencies and organizations.

THE POSITION:  The City of San Mateo’s Community Development Department has an opportunity for an intern to work on a number of projects. • Capital Improvement Program (CIP) – Civil engineering majors with an interest in capital improvement projects, design of civil infrastructure, and construction delivery procedures.   • Assist in other areas such as procurement, communication, public outreach, and public surveys.

In addition, the intern may work on a variety of other projects depending availability and workload.
