The Position

The Police Communications Call Taker (Per Diem) receives emergency and non-emergency call for service, performs technical support duties in police department communications, and performs related duties as required. The position requires excellent customer service and communication skills.

Examples of Job Duties

• Determines priority of calls for service and forwards information to the appropriate dispatcher for dissemination to field units.
• Receives, monitors and transmits messages over a variety of communication networks.
• Receives information, questions and requests for service from the public.
• Types and records activity and status reports.
• Records, classifies and maintains records of all communications.
• Answers or refers to others for answers to questions and requests for information.
• Provides information to field units, other agencies and the public.
• Sends and receives printed information via computer terminals.
• Monitors closed circuit television system.
• Receives and routes a variety of law enforcement reports, warrants and other materials.
• Performs a variety of other duties in support of the police department information and communications functions as required.

The Ideal Candidate 

The successful candidate will possess excellent customer service and communication skills with the ability to maintain accurate and up-to-date records. Additionally, the ideal candidate will be able to develop and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers, supervisors, and department staff. Dispatcher and/or Call Taker work experience in a public safety department/agency is highly desirable.

Experience: Some public contact experience

The total salary range for the Media Relations and Communications Specialist/Manager position (classification could be Council Community Relations Coordinator or Council Community Relations Director – Unclassified commensurate with experience) is $58,631.04 - $109,791.76. This amount includes an approximate five percent (5%) ongoing non-pensionable pay. The actual salary shall be determined by the final candidates’ qualifications and experience.

The Office of Mayor-Elect Matt Mahan is seeking an organized, creative, and energetic individual who is passionate about serving the community of San José and committed to advancing the Mayor’s vision for the City. The individual will join a dynamic team led by the Chief Communications and Marketing Officer that is responsible for carrying out a comprehensive and multi-faceted media relations and communications operation.   

Responsibilities for this position may include, but are not limited to the following:  

• Writing and editing press releases, media advisories, speeches, opinion pieces, mayoral correspondence, news and feature articles and a wide variety of other communications materials. 
• Assisting with scheduling and drafting content for a multi-faceted social media strategy to effectively engage the community and constituents with the Mayor's policies, positions, and goals. 
• Conduct a range of media outreach strategies, including placing stories in media outlets; coordinating operations, such as scheduling, for media requests and interview preparation; pitching media, and managing media lists. 
• Conduct research and prepare information for media interviews, media memos, strategy sessions, and to advise on policy decisions. 
• Proactively review media sources and outlets, scroll through news sites and social media to stay current on local, regional, and national topics that affect San José and the Mayor’s policies.  
• Analyzing earned and owned media metrics as well as larger external trends. 
• Day-to-day administration of the office’s communication tools and schedule. 

Employees in this classification are not members of the classified civil service and appointment would be on a contract “at-will” basis and is for a specified period of time to be determined by the appointing elected official and does not extend past the end of the elected official's or appointing authority's term. Candidates must be willing to work evenings and weekends on occasion, and as exempt management employees, are not eligible for overtime compensation. TRAINING & EXPERIENCE: Certified Personal Trainer required. Additionally, combination of education, training, and experience, that provides the required knowledge and abilities.

The Newark Recreation and Community Services Department seeks motivated, self-driven individuals passionate about working with the public. The Newark Recreation and Community Services Department seeks motivated, self-driven individuals passionate about working with the public. As a Senior Customer Service Representative, your role is pivotal in delivering exceptional service to our members and guests. As the primary point of contact, supervises part-time staff, enforces Silliman Center policies, assists in training staff, and serves as the primary contact for customers. This position requires you to work at our indoor water park and recreation center.

The City of Lincoln is accepting applications for the position of Refuse Truck Driver II in the Solid Waste division of the Public Works department. Under general supervision, this position performs the full array of duties in the Solid Waste division, including maintenance, operating collection vehicles and refuse equipment operation. This job classification is represented by the Classified, Local 39 employee group; the probation period is 12 months.

Open positions may be filled as regular/full-time or seasonal/part-time.  Seasonal positions are limited to 999 hours per fiscal year and are unbenefited, and may become regular/full-time positions, dependent upon the future needs of the department.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

The Refuse Truck Driver II is the journey-level class responsible for a wide variety of maintenance and refuse collection tasks. This classification is distinguished from the next higher classification of Senior Refuse Truck Driver in that the latter performs the more complex assignments and lead responsibilities. 

SUPERVISION RECEIVED/EXERCISED

This position receives general supervision from the Solid Waste division’s Public Services Supervisor. May exercise technical and functional supervision over assigned staff.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Include but are not limited to the following:

• Performs general maintenance, repair, construction, equipment operation and installation work in refuse collection.
• Operates a variety of collection vehicles and equipment including front, rear and side loaders in the collection and transportation of residential and commercial refuse; drives to landfill site when vehicle is full and unloads material; evaluates and updates assigned routes; cleans, maintains and inspects assigned vehicles; maintains daily logs.
• Demonstrates a full understanding of applicable policies, procedures and work methods associated with assigned duties; may provide training to lower level staff; responds to questions and concerns from the general public; provides information as is appropriate and resolves public service complaints.
• Establishes positive working relationships with representatives of community organizations, state/local agencies, City management and staff, and the public.

PHYSICAL, MENTAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL WORKING CONDITIONS

Position requires sitting, standing, walking on level and slippery surfaces, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, stooping, squatting, crouching, grasping and making repetitive hand movement in the performance of daily duties. The position also requires both near and far vision when inspecting work and operating assigned equipment. The need to lift, carry and push tools, equipment and supplies weighing 25 pounds or more is also required. Additionally, the incumbent in this outdoor position works in all weather conditions including wet, hot and cold. The incumbent may use cleaning and lubricating chemicals, pesticides or herbicides which may expose the employee to fumes, dust and air contaminants. The nature of the work also requires the incumbent to climb ladders, use power and noise producing tools and equipment, operate hydraulic aerial devices, drive motorized vehicles and heavy equipment, work in heavy vehicle traffic conditions and often work with constant interruptions.

KNOWLEDGE/ABILITIES/SKILLS

The following are a representative sample of the KAS’s necessary to perform essential duties of the position.

Knowledge of:  Practices, techniques and materials used in maintenance, construction and repair of streets, buildings, parks and water treatment facilities; knowledge of the City street system; applicable federal, state and local laws, codes and regulations; operating characteristics and safety requirements for operation of trucks, refuse vehicles and other heavy and light equipment; defensive driving; proper lifting procedures; methods and techniques for record keeping; basic principles of mathematics; occupational hazards and standard safety procedures.

Ability to:  Perform maintenance, repair and installation of asphalt, signs, concrete, water mains and storm drains; drive and operate trucks and heavy construction equipment; respond to issues and concerns from the community; interpret, explain and apply applicable laws, codes and regulations; operate a variety of construction equipment, vehicles and power and hand tools; perform heavy manual labor for extended periods of time; work at substantial heights; respond to after-hours call-outs if assigned; organize, prioritize and follow-up on work assignments; work independently and as part of a team; make sound decisions within established guidelines; analyze a complex issue, and develop and implement an appropriate response; follow written and oral directions; observe safety principles and work in a safe manner; communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; establish and maintain effective working relationships.

Skill to:  Safely and effectively operate a variety of maintenance equipment, tools and materials.
