MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Equivalent to graduation from high school and two (2) years of accounting clerical support experience. College-level accounting coursework may substitute for the required experience, on the basis of twelve (12) semester or sixteen (16) quarter units equaling one year of experience.

Successful completion of college-level courses in accounting and budgeting and internal certificates of competencies in accounting, labor distribution and accounting software are highly desirable.

Must be able to travel to various locations within and outside of Berkeley to meet program needs and to fulfill the job responsibilities. When driving on City business, maintenance of a valid California driver's license and satisfactory driving record is required.

The Department

 

The Human Services Department (HSD) delivers and supports services by forging long-term community partnerships, engaging with and building the capacity of the community to do its own problem-solving, and leveraging financial and volunteer resources. The Department’s nationally and internationally recognized programs support thousands of residents throughout their life course, from infants to elders. The department offers a working environment which is friendly, supportive, collegial, and where staff of many disciplines come together to problem solve, compassionately assist those in need, and share successes.

 

The Aging and Family Services Division (AFS) of HSD specifically supports older residents and their caregivers to live active, healthy lives in the Tri-City community. With input from local, older adults (age 55 years+) as our guide, the AFS team strives to provide and AFS staff work together to provide a continuum of supportive services that range from health promotion activities to home-based end of life care. AFS has a Senior InfoLine (phone and email) that is answered in 4 language (Farsi, English, Spanish and Chinese) that is often an entry point. As an older adult or their caregiver’s situation changes, they seamlessly have access to a continuum of programs that include counseling and emotional support; care coordination and resource assistance; specialized family caregiver support and education. Many of these supportive services are provided in the resident’s home. We also provide regular expert clinical consultation, supervision, opportunities for self-reflection, and team building, fostering a culture of empathy, inclusivity, humility, and respect.

 

The Position

 

Under the supervision of the Age Well Center Managers, the Chef/Food Services Manager position manages meal programs for the City of Fremont’s Age Well Centers. Chef responsibilities across both Age Well Center locations include the performance of menu planning, purchasing of foodstuffs, preparing quantity meals, supervising and assisting kitchen employees and volunteers and maintaining clean and orderly kitchens.

The incumbent will be responsible for properly cooked, economical, and wholesome, well balanced meals in City operated Age Well Centers. This position is not limited to being responsible for the assignment of work, supervision and evaluation of paid and volunteer food service workers. The review and approval of proposed menus, food purchases, control and monitoring of expenditure rates; and institution of disciplinary actions are functions reserved for the Program Coordinator or Age Well Center Managers.

 

Examples of Duties

 

• Plan menus with consideration for the dietary needs of older adults, wholesomeness, quantity of food to be prepared and budgetary constraints.
• Estimate food requirements and requisitions for food and supplies.
• Prepare, cook, and serve a wide variety of foodstuffs for quantity food service.
• May cut/carve and cook meats; bake breads, cakes and pastries; peel and prepare vegetables; and make salads.
• Place food in serving containers and serves food.
• Maintain proper temperature, rotation and storage of food.
• Direct and assist in cleaning kitchens and kitchen equipment after each meal.
• Estimate food requirements and requisitions for food and supplies.
• Direct and assist in the cleaning of the kitchen and kitchen equipment after each meal.
• Oversee that the kitchen and equipment are kept clean, sanitary and in proper working condition. Schedule regular maintenance of kitchen equipment as needed. Maintain standards of safety and sanitation in kitchen area.
• Recruit, train, supervise, instruct, and direct employees and volunteers assigned to working in the kitchens.
• Develop and support additional meal programs, including, but not limited to fundraisers, catering events and cooking demonstrations and special events.
• Keep records and prepare reports as required. Inclusive of any certification requirements and/or medical clearances required of subordinate employees and volunteers.
• Oversee community garden program, including crop rotation, seasonal planting, and maintenance assignment.
• Coordinate with office staff, marketing and sales strategies to increase visibility and participation for meal programs.
• Ensure kitchen compliance with health regulations and participate in health inspections.
• Other duties as assigned.

 

Under general supervision, lead, and conduct activities in the delivery of recreation program areas including camps, preschool, tots, after school programs, parks and nature, teens, boxing, youth and adult sports, special events, and active adults; oversee the proper use of indoor and outdoor community recreational facilities, perform a variety of custodial tasks; assist the public and staff in their use of the facility.

 

Distinguishing Characteristics: 

Under general supervision, the Recreation Aide assists in the proper use of a community recreational facility and assist Recreation Leaders in providing a variety of recreation programs. The Recreation Leader classification is distinguished from the Recreation Aide level in the complexity of duties assigned, independence of action taken, the amount of time spent performing the duties, the nature of the public contact made, and its training responsibilities of new staff. Positions at this level are required to be fully trained in all procedures related to the assigned area of responsibility.

Livermore Area Recreation and Park District is currently recruiting for Lifeguard I/II.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

This is the entry-level classification in the Lifeguard series.  Initially under close supervision, incumbents learn to perform essential lifeguard duties.  Work is usually supervised while in progress and fits an established structure or pattern.  Exceptions or changes in procedures are explained in detail as they arise.  As experience is gained, assignments become more varied; close supervision and frequent review of work is reduced as an incumbent demonstrates the skills necessary to perform the work independently.

Work is primarily performed within a public swimming pool environment, where stamina is needed to perform moderate to heavy lifting of pool equipment and furniture or children and adults who may require removal from the pool, and to stay in the pool for prolonged periods.  Must possess the mobility to stand, stoop, kneel, reach, bend, climb, push and pull materials and equipment, and swim while wearing an appropriate uniform with protective equipment.  Vision and hearing must be sufficient to see and hear adults and children in crowded and noisy conditions and/or situations.  Must also possess:  the mobility to work in an office setting and use standard office equipment, including a computer; vision to read printed materials and a computer screen; and hearing and speech to communicate in person or by using a telephone and radio.  Finger dexterity is needed to access, enter, and retrieve data using a computer keyboard or to operate safety equipment.  Must possess the ability to swim distances and dive to pool depths, as determined by testing/certification authorities, and to lift 150 pounds or heavier weights with assistance and/or the use of proper equipment.

 

ENVIRONMENTAL ELEMENTS

Incumbents work outdoors in a pool environment with wet and slippery conditions, and are exposed to variable weather conditions; may be exposed to chlorine, acids, and other chemicals at aquatics facilities, as well as blood and body fluids while rendering first aid and CPR.  Incumbents will interact with individuals in interpreting and enforcing rules, policies, and procedures.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS

Incumbents may be assigned an irregular work schedule, including weekends, early mornings, evenings, and holidays.

LIFEGUARD II ($19.20 hourly)
 

SUMMARY

Under general supervision, opens, closes, and secures the pool facility; monitors activities in the water, pool decks, and ancillary areas of aquatics facilities to ensure the safety of patrons; explains and enforces swimming programs and pool policies, regulations, and rules.  Performs rescues and administers first aid, CPR, and AED as needed; prepares facilities and sets up equipment for special activities and events; and performs related work as required.

 

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

Receives general supervision from higher-level supervisory staff and direction from higher-level staff.  Exercises no supervision over staff.

 

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

This is the journey-level classification in the Lifeguard series responsible for performing the full range of lifeguard duties, including patron safety and opening/closing an assigned pool facility.  Incumbents at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise and are fully aware of the aquatics operating procedures and policies.  This classification is distinguished from the Aquatics Lead in that the latter is an advanced journey-level classification which provides technical and functional direction over assigned lifeguard staff.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Management reserves the right to add, modify, change, or rescind the work assignments of different positions and to make reasonable accommodations so that qualified employees can perform the essential functions of the job.

5. Performs all required lifeguard-training skills as needed.
6. Assists and aids in swim lesson programs under the direction of assigned Swim Instructor.
7. Provides high quality customer service in a safe and timely manner.
8. Inspects and maintains swimming and pool equipment for functionality, ensures proper placement and availability in the pool area, and recommends maintenance and repair, as needed.

The City of Union City's Community and Recreation Services is seeking staff for the following roles:

• Lifeguard (Recreation Leader) - $17.14 - $20.84/hourly
  • Under general supervision of the Recreation Coordinator, Senior Lifeguard or Pool Manager, the Lifeguard performs swim instructor duties in teaching swimming and water safety courses, enforcing City public swimming pool rules and monitoring pool patron conduct.  Lifeguards must have knowledge and be physically able to perform emergency rescue and lifesaving techniques. Must be able to provide instruction in all levels of American Red Cross swimming certification and other aquatics programs.

 

• Senior Lifeguard (Senior Recreation Leader) - $18.24 - $22.22/hourly
  • Under general supervision from the Recreation Coordinator or Pool Manager, must be able to perform all duties as a Lifeguard and know operational rules and protocols of Dan Oden Swim Complex. Must have basic customer service practices and knowledge of all current safety standards and information related to aquatics. Must assist in teaching swimming lessons and lifeguarding.

 

• Pool Manager (CRS Program Manager) - $19.93 -$24.22/hourly
  • Under general supervision of the Recreation Coordinator, able to perform all duties and responsibilities of a Lifeguard and Senior Lifeguard, assist in staff meetings and lifeguard trainings, direct contact for participants to explain pool rules, policies, and procedures. Pool Manager assists in implementing and scheduling staff, program, and services.

ABOUT THE POSITION:

The Seasonal Maintenance Worker position performs a variety of entry-level and unskilled labor, maintenance and repair tasks in various public works operations, such as park maintenance, landscape maintenance, creek and catch basin maintenance, street maintenance, and janitorial and facility maintenance.

This is an excellent opportunity to gain insight and experience for a rewarding career in local government.

Typically, work hours are scheduled between Monday through Friday, 7:00 am to 3:30 pm.  Some hours may be adjusted for special events in evening or on weekends; up to 29 hours per week.

This is a part-time, temporary position with limited duration.

 

EXAMPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Perform preparatory work for maintenance activities – gathering equipment, materials and supplies, loading and unloading, and laying out materials and equipment for projects
• Perform a variety of routine physical labor tasks, depending upon area of assignment, such as posting general notices, pulling weeds, picking up litter, raking leaves and debris, planting, miscellaneous painting, replacing light bulbs, emptying trash bins, cleaning park bathroom daily and other minor custodial work

• Operate power tools such as power washer, leaf blower and weed eater, as well as basic hand tools such as brooms, shovels, rakes and hoes

This is the entry-level classification in the Park Ranger series responsible for performing a variety of routine maintenance for District parks and open space areas and facilities.  Incumbents at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies.  Work is reviewed upon completion for soundness, appropriateness, and conformity to policy and requirements.  This class is distinguished from the Park Ranger in that the latter provides enforcement of land use laws and regulations and serves as a Peace Officer under the California Penal Code.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

12. Follows safe working practices and makes appropriate use of related safety equipment as required.
13. Performs administrative tasks, such as attending meetings and training, preparing reports, monitoring expenditures, and maintaining records.

Licenses and Certifications:

•  At time of appointment, California Driver’s License with a satisfactory driving record maintained throughout employment.
• Completion of American Red Cross First Aid, CPR, and AED training within six months of hire and maintain certification throughout employment.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Must possess mobility to perform medium physical work; vision to read printed materials and a computer screen, and to operate a vehicle to transport materials and equipment to various sites and offices; hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone or radio. The classification supports indoor and outdoor recreation programs requiring frequent walking, running, conducting exercises, and related physical activities. Finger dexterity is needed to access, enter, and retrieve data using a computer keyboard, calculator, or tools and equipment used in assigned program area. Program activities may require sitting, standing, walking on level and slippery surfaces, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, stooping, squatting, crouching, grasping, and making repetitive hand movement in the performance of daily duties; the ability to lift, carry, and push tools, equipment, and supplies weighing up to 40 pounds or higher weights with assistance and/or the use of proper equipment.

ENVIRONMENTAL ELEMENTS

Incumbents work in both indoor and outdoor environments with moderate to loud noise levels. May work in controlled temperature conditions, cold and hot temperatures, or inclement weather conditions. Incumbents will interact with individuals in interpreting and enforcing rules, policies, and procedures.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Incumbents may be assigned an irregular work schedule, including weekends, early mornings, evenings, and holidays.
