The City of San Mateo Parks and Recreation Department is looking responsible, enthusiastic, and energetic individuals to join our Aquatics Section!

Qualifications:

Prerequisites: Red Cross Lifesaving Certificate that includes CPR.  Also, must be at least 18 years old with 2 years lifeguard experience.  WSI certifications encouraged.

Senior Lifeguard Job Responsibilities:

• The primary responsibility of a senior lifeguard is to protect lives by using their skills to prevent injury among patrons.  This duty does not only include rescuing drowning victims or administering CPR and first aid.  Being alert and proactive also helps to prevent dangerous situations from ever occurring in the first place.
• Oversees lifeguards during swim lessons and rec swim.
• Helps to process registration and create class lists for each session.
• Assists with Lifeguard and Swim Instructor evaluations.
• Open and close the facilities.
• Take and record pool chemical reading and monitor chemical use.
• Help create and conduct Aquatics trainings.
• May be responsible for instructing swim lesson participants in a variety of swim levels if needed.
• Submits and reviews completed report cards, skills sheets, and attendance information on time.

Distinguishing Characteristics: 

Under general supervision, the Recreation Aide assists in the proper use of a community recreational facility and assist Recreation Leaders in providing a variety of recreation programs. The Recreation Leader classification is distinguished from the Recreation Aide level in the complexity of duties assigned, independence of action taken, the amount of time spent performing the duties, the nature of the public contact made, and its training responsibilities of new staff. Positions at this level are required to be fully trained in all procedures related to the assigned area of responsibility.

SUMMARY

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

Receives immediate supervision from higher-level supervisory staff and direction from higher-level staff.  Exercises no supervision over staff.

 

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

This is the entry-level classification in the Lifeguard series.  Initially under close supervision, incumbents learn to perform essential lifeguard duties.  Work is usually supervised while in progress and fits an established structure or pattern.  Exceptions or changes in procedures are explained in detail as they arise.  As experience is gained, assignments become more varied; close supervision and frequent review of work is reduced as an incumbent demonstrates the skills necessary to perform the work independently.

Education and Experience:

• Prior experience participating in aquatics programs or performing lifeguard duties is desirable.

 

Knowledge of:

• Principles and techniques of lifeguarding, including lifesaving methods and procedures.
• Operational characteristics of water rescue safety equipment and devices.
• Principles and practices for providing high level of customer service.
• Modern office practices, methods, and computer equipment and applications.

• Learn and understand the organization and operation of the District’s aquatics facilities.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Work is primarily performed within a public swimming pool environment, where stamina is needed to perform moderate to heavy lifting of pool equipment and furniture or children and adults who may require removal from the pool, and to stay in the pool for prolonged periods.  Must possess the mobility to stand, stoop, kneel, reach, bend, climb, push and pull materials and equipment, and swim while wearing an appropriate uniform with protective equipment.  Vision and hearing must be sufficient to see and hear adults and children in crowded and noisy conditions and/or situations.  Must also possess:  the mobility to work in an office setting and use standard office equipment, including a computer; vision to read printed materials and a computer screen; and hearing and speech to communicate in person or by using a telephone and radio.  Finger dexterity is needed to access, enter, and retrieve data using a computer keyboard or to operate safety equipment.  Must possess the ability to swim distances and dive to pool depths, as determined by testing/certification authorities, and to lift 150 pounds or heavier weights with assistance and/or the use of proper equipment.

 

ENVIRONMENTAL ELEMENTS

Incumbents work outdoors in a pool environment with wet and slippery conditions, and are exposed to variable weather conditions; may be exposed to chlorine, acids, and other chemicals at aquatics facilities, as well as blood and body fluids while rendering first aid and CPR.  Incumbents will interact with individuals in interpreting and enforcing rules, policies, and procedures.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS

Incumbents may be assigned an irregular work schedule, including weekends, early mornings, evenings, and holidays.

LIFEGUARD II ($19.20 hourly)
 

SUMMARY

Under general supervision, opens, closes, and secures the pool facility; monitors activities in the water, pool decks, and ancillary areas of aquatics facilities to ensure the safety of patrons; explains and enforces swimming programs and pool policies, regulations, and rules.  Performs rescues and administers first aid, CPR, and AED as needed; prepares facilities and sets up equipment for special activities and events; and performs related work as required.

Receives general supervision from higher-level supervisory staff and direction from higher-level staff.  Exercises no supervision over staff.

This is the journey-level classification in the Lifeguard series responsible for performing the full range of lifeguard duties, including patron safety and opening/closing an assigned pool facility.  Incumbents at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise and are fully aware of the aquatics operating procedures and policies.  This classification is distinguished from the Aquatics Lead in that the latter is an advanced journey-level classification which provides technical and functional direction over assigned lifeguard staff.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Pool Manager (CRS Program Manager) - $19.93 -$24.22/hourly
  • Under general supervision of the Recreation Coordinator, able to perform all duties and responsibilities of a Lifeguard and Senior Lifeguard, assist in staff meetings and lifeguard trainings, direct contact for participants to explain pool rules, policies, and procedures. Pool Manager assists in implementing and scheduling staff, program, and services.

ABOUT THE POSITION:

The Seasonal Maintenance Worker position performs a variety of entry-level and unskilled labor, maintenance and repair tasks in various public works operations, such as park maintenance, landscape maintenance, creek and catch basin maintenance, street maintenance, and janitorial and facility maintenance.

Minimum Qualifications

Licensure/Certification

• Psychiatric Social Worker I/II: Registration with the Board of Behavioral Sciences as an Intern (Associate Clinical Social Worker). An individual hired in this classification must become licensed within six years from the date of employment as a Clinical Social Worker issued by the State of California. For Psychiatric Social Worker II, current California license as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker is required.
• Marriage & Family Therapist I/II: Registration with the Board of Behavioral Sciences as an Intern (Associate Marriage and Family Therapist). An individual hired in this classification must become licensed within six years from the date of employment as a Marriage and Family Therapist in the State of California. Behavioral Health and Recovery Services (BHRS), provides a broad spectrum of Trauma Informed mental health and substance use services for children, youth, families, adults and older adults. We provide behavioral health in diverse settings including community outpatient clinics, corrections, field-based settings such as homeless encampments and shelters, and through a network of community agencies and independent providers who offer outpatient services, residential treatment, rehabilitation and other services for adults. BHRS Adult and Older Adult Services serves residents of San Mateo County age 18 years and older with severe functional impairments due to a serious mental illness and a/or multiple co-occurring, substance, medical and/or developmental disorder.
