Description

We have three immediate internships available with the District in the areas of: Water Quality, Water Distribution, and Water Treatment. Assignments are for a 40 hour week. Optional work schedules or reduced hours (i.e. part-time) may be considered on a case-by-case basis.  Duration of assignments is for up to six (6) months. Positions operate out of MMWD’s Corte Madera location (Water Distribution or Water Quality) and multiple locations in Marin County (Water Treatment).

 

The Positions

Water Quality Laboratory Intern: (1 position) Under the direction of the Water Quality Laboratory Manager, this intern assists the lab in various support functions and basic analysis  This will include sample receipt and data entry in LIMS, bottle set-up, glassware/general house cleaning and assistance with reports.  Also, this intern will assist with some analyses such as pH, conductivity, color and turbidity and will learn a lot about the analytical requirements of a drinking water lab.  Equipment used for this internship includes pH meter, colorimeter, turbidimeter, office equipment and others.  Work hours are M-F 8:00am-4:30pm.  This internship is for up to a six (6) month duration.

 

Desired Background: Must be 18 years old or older.

Candidate must have current or recent enrollment in one of the following college level courses of study:

▪ Biology                       ▪ Biochemistry                  ▪ Chemistry                 ▪ Environmental Science

Candidate should possess genuine interest in a career in the water/wastewater laboratory field.

Must be detail oriented, possess good problem solving skills, ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing, as well as have the ability to lift 50 pounds. Candidate should have a working knowledge of Microsoft Windows and Microsoft Office.  LIMS experience is a plus.

 

 

Distribution System Operator Intern: (1 position) Under the direct supervision of a certified water distribution operator, learn how to operate and maintain mechanical, electrical and control equipment. Perform inspections of mechanical and electrical equipment.  Assist operators in handling consumer calls.  Assist field personnel with confined space entries.  Learn the basics of a potable water distribution system.  Safety Boots required. Work hours are M-F 6:30 am to 3:00 pm.  This position is for up to a six (6) month duration at the Corte Madera location.

Candidate must have current or recent enrollment in one of the following college level courses of study:

Water Treatment Plant Intern: (1 position) Under the direct supervision of a qualified and licensed Water Treatment Plant Operator, assist with the operation and maintenance of one of three different drinking water facilities. The candidate will be exposed to surface water treatment plant processes, chemical dosing, industry standard calculations, water quality laboratory tests, the operation and maintenance of analyzers and ground water quality verification. Safety Boots required. Work hours are M – F 7:00am-3:30pm at one of three different facilities: San Geronimo Water Treatment Plant in Woodacre; Bon Tempe Water Treatment Plant in Fairfax; Ignacio Water Quality Station in Novato. Optional work schedules may be considered on a case-by-case basis. This position is for up to a six (6) month duration.

Water Quality Sampling Intern: (1 position to open in SPRING OR SUMMER OF 2019) Under direction of the Water Quality Field Supervisor, assists with distribution system and reservoir water sampling, reservoir algae investigations and reservoir algae treatments, and additional miscellaneous field investigations and water quality tasks.  Uses sampling equipment such as a chlorine test kit, temperature gauge, and a datasonde with hand-held surveyor. Performs miscellaneous office tasks, such as mapping sampling points, working with data and reports, and scanning documents.  Additionally, performs maintenance and clean-up work as needed. Safety Boots required. Work hours are M-F 7:00 am to 3:30 pm.  This position is for up to a six (6) month duration at the Corte Madera location.

 

Desired Background: Must be 18 years old or older and have a California Driver’s License + satisfactory driving record.

 Must be able to perform moderate physical work, climb tank ladders, safely operate a 4-wheel drive truck, and tow a small trailer. Education and knowledge in the areas of water quality, chemistry, water treatment, biology, and/or environmental sciences, and some knowledge of limnology preferred. Knowledge of, and experience with, water quality sampling and equipment: datasonde use, maintenance, and calibration; dissolved oxygen and chlorine field analyzers, etc. Knowledge of Microsoft Office, Microsoft Windows, LIMS, GIS, and operation of office equipment. Must be detail oriented. Knowledge of Marin Streets; ability and willingness to work safely with pesticides; California State Water Resources Control Board Drinking Water Distribution Operator License highly desirable. Desired skills include ability to work independently and efficiently, work as a team player, and work effectively in a fast-paced environment. Must be able to swim 100 feet and lift up to 50 pounds. Ability to safely operate a boat with an outboard motor is preferred.
