The Open Space District is a regional greenbelt system in the Santa Cruz Mountain region comprised of over 63,000 acres of land in 26 open space preserves, protected for public enjoyment and recreation. About the Position:  Seasonal Open Space Technicians assist with building and maintaining roads and trails on District lands, operating mechanical equipment such as chainsaws, power pruners and mowers. Additional duties include cleanup and routine maintenance on District lands, in buildings and restrooms and driving trucks as required. Seasonal Open Space Technicians also use hand and power tools to do semi-skilled carpentry, construction tasks and to remove invasive non-native plants. Work location may be at either the Skyline or the Foothills Field Office (there is no seasonal housing available).  Job Description is on the website.

Requirements:  Basic requirements include high school diploma or G.E.D.; possession of a valid California driver’s license; skills to perform basic construction and maintenance assignments; ability to perform manual labor requiring bending, stooping, kneeling, and lifting; and the ability to work in, or around, poison oak.

Highly desirable traits include prior work experience in a park, forest, or public recreation area involving work with equipment and tools used in park maintenance. Upon hire, employee must purchase and wear the required uniform. In addition, candidates selected for the position will be required to successfully pass and obtain certification in Basic First Aid/CPR, AED for Lay Responders.   

Working Conditions: This is a full time, Monday through Friday position, with occasional weekend and holiday work required. Employees work in the field in rugged and remote areas and are exposed to loud noise levels, cold and hot temperatures, inclement weather conditions, road hazards, vibration, confining workspace, chemicals, mechanical or electrical hazards, hazardous physical substances and fumes, and poison oak. Seasonal assignments will not exceed 999 hours (approximately 6 months of full time work) and do not include benefits.
