DEFINITION: Under general supervision, plans, directs and coordinates the daily activities and staff for Mill Valley Recreation Department and Community Center Summer Day Camp Program.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:

  • Ability to develop, coordinate, plan, implement and supervise the day-to-day activities, themes and special events for an ongoing summer day camp.
  • Create and maintain a safe, challenging and creative camp environment.
  • Demonstrate excellent customer service and communicate effectively with co-workers, parents, and campers.
  • Supervise, direct and motivate subordinate camp counselors and counselors-in-training.
  • Maintain registration, attendance, and activity records; ensure the proper pick-up/drop-off of campers. 
  • Encourage good behavior, appropriate manners and active play by both staff and campers. 
  • Possess strong leadership skills in one or more of the following areas: arts, crafts, sports, playground games, drama, songs/music, nature or special events.
  • Ability to lead groups of campers in various day camp activities.
  • Motivate staff and campers through example.
  • Must be a team player and have the ability to work independently with minimum supervision.
  • Create and maintain a positive day camp environment.
  • Practice proper hygiene, with self and children, to deter the spread of disease (colds, flu, etc).
  • Enthusiasm and motivation.
  • Respond professionally to emergencies, provide care as indicated under the scope of training.
  • Ability to communicate clearly both orally and in writing.
  • The ability to speak English clearly and understandably.
  • Perform related duties as required.

TRAINING & EXPERIENCE: Any combination of education, training, and experience, which likely provides the required knowledge and abilities.
PRE-EMPLOYMENT CONDITIONS: Candidates receiving a conditional job offer must pass a pre-placement fingerprint review. Candidates must possess a current CPR/AED and First Aid certificate and be comfortable calling 911 in an emergency.

  1. Certifications - Has certifications or is willing to obtain certifications within 2 weeks of obtaining job.
  2. Availability to work flexible hours outside of a typical workday (weeknights and weekends).
  3. Customer Service oriented (patient and responsive).
  4. Attention to Detail.
  5. Prompt, timely.
  6. Enjoys the opportunity to get moving and away from the desk while they work.
