THE OPPORTUNITY

The City of Pacifica is currently recruiting for Collection Systems, Wastewater Treatment Plant Operators.

This recruitment is being conducted to establish an eligible list for full-time, regular candidates and full-time, temporary (limited term) candidates. There is currently an opening for a temporary, benefited position. This position is anticipated to last approximately 6 months.

WASTEWATER TREATMENT PLANT OPERATOR I (COLLECTIONS)

Under general supervision or direction, the Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator I - Collections Systems is responsible for the overall operation of the Wastewater Treatment Plant – Collections System, which includes the repair and maintenance of a variety of machinery, equipment and the Wastewater Treatment Plant facilities.

BASIC EXAMPLE OF DUTIES

Duties may include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Performs operation and maintenance on sanitary sewer pump station.
  • Responds to service requests regarding clogged mainline stoppages, mainline breaks, manholes and related structures.
  • Performs mechanical work in repairing and installing equipment.
  • Operates compressor, air gun tamper, backhoe and other related construction tools.
  • May undertake minor carpentry, plumbing, cement work and electrical.
  • Performs general grounds maintenance work, sweeping, sanding, painting.
  • Maintains routine and daily records.

Ideal Candidate

Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator I (Collection Systems)

Experience

One (1) year of experience in collections systems maintenance/underground construction and/or mechanical maintenance.

Education

Graduation from high school or equivalent. 

Certificates/License

Possession of a Wastewater Collection System Maintenance Certificate Grade I issued by the California Water Environmental Association (CWEA) at time of appointment is highly desirable. This position will be required to obtain one within the first twelve (12) months of employment. 

This position will be required to obtain a Class A or Class B driver’s license within six (6) months of employment and will be subject to random drug and alcohol testing under the D.O.T. regulations.  Possession of a commercial driver’s license at time of appointment is highly desirable.

Physical Demands

Will work in adverse weather conditions that require exposure to wind, rain, and cold temperatures; work in an atmosphere that often involves noxious odors, noise gases, and contact with wastewater.    

Must be willing to report to work at any time during an emergency and work an irregular work schedule.

Hours

This is a limited term, full- time, 40 hours per week position. The current vacancy is for a temporary (limited term), full-time position. The position is anticipated to last 6 months. The work schedule for the current vacancy is anticipated to be Tuesday through Friday from 6:30 am to 5:00 pm.

 

Benefits

The City's comprehensive benefits package includes:

Holidays: Thirteen (13) days per year.

Vacation: From 11 to 27 days per year, depending on length of service.

Sick leave: Accrual is one day per month, with no limit on accrual.

Retirement: Depends on duration of assignment. 

Insurance:  The City provides its employees with a medical  insurance allowance that allows employees to purchase medical insurance through either Teamsters Union #856 Health and Welfare or CalPERS medical benefits plan. Some plans require employee contributions.   Employees with proof of qualifying health insurance coverage through another group health plan may qualify for a "Health In-Lieu Payment" when declining city coverage.

The City contributes toward a dental insurance plan and vision plan for employee and all eligible dependents.

The City pays premiums for:

·         Life insurance premium in the amount of $30,000.

·         Long term disability insurance (to begin sixty days after onset of non-work-related illness or injury).

Deferred Compensation Plan: Employees may participate in a pre-tax retirement savings plan.

Applicants will be assessed on the application submitted. Applicants will be screened to the most qualified. Applicants deemed most qualified will be invited to an oral interview panel exam. Applicants passing the exam interview will be placed on an eligible list established for this recruitment which will be used to fill our current openings as well as any future openings for the life of the eligible list.

Human Resources Department reserves the right to revise the testing process to best meet the needs of the City.

 

Upon conditional offer, this position will be required to pass a background check which includes but is not limited to a pre-employment physical and drug test.
