Under the supervision of the Recreation Coordinator, this position is assigned to the Aquatics Division of the Recreation Department at the City of Pacifica. The Head Swim Coach teaches the fundamentals of competitive swimming in a positive environment. The duties include coaching the swim team (Pacifica Sea Lions), providing instruction and guidance during training sessions, supervising several assistant swim coaches, and performing other related work as required.
The Head Swim Coach is responsible for working with the Recreation Coordinator to ensure the development of each individual swimmer while encouraging sportsmanship, healthy competition, and attendance at meets. This position is expected to enforce the discipline of regular swimming practices consisting of technique demonstration and drills along with age-appropriate motivation, encouragement and fun.
Essential Functions of the Position
- Attend all scheduled swim meets; supervise all swimmers; coordinate volunteers (in conjunction with the Pacifica Sea Lion's Parent Board); create all swim meet line-ups and information.
- Coordinate practice group scheduling and assign athletes to appropriate training groups; maintain appropriate records for team members and meets.
- Plan, prepare, and conduct team practices; develop strong team building qualities through demonstrated leadership.
- Attend all swim team staff meetings; attend all registration and parent meetings; coordinate and attend all swim team special events and fundraisers.
- Actively coach swimmers in competitive stroke training to improve technique.
- Recruit new swimmers to program.
- Have basic computer skills in Microsoft Word, Excel or related programs.
- Possess excellent customer service skills in all forms of communication.
- Meet all safety and operational requirements in the facility; abide by the USA Swimming Code of Conduct and Park, Beaches & Recreation policies and procedures.
Supervision Received and Exercised
Receives direction from the Aquatics Recreation Coordinator. Exercises supervision over all assistant swim coaches and all swim team participants.
Minimum two-year history of coaching on a competitive swim teams is mandatory, plus a minimum two-year history as a swimming instructor. Familiarity with the USA Swimming rules and local swim conference rules and regulations. Certification in Safety Training for Swim Coaches or equivalent is required, if candidate does not currently possess this certification they must obtain it within 30 days of employment. Current lifeguarding and C/PRO certification required. Current and valid California driver’s license required. Experience as a head coach of a competitive swim team is highly desirable. A Bachelor’s degree or an Associate Degree in physical education, recreation, or a related field also is desirable.
All employees of the Parks, Beaches & Recreation Department that work with children in any capacity need to successfully pass the Department of Justice fingerprint requirements prior to employment. All employees must provide proof of eligibility to work in the United States.
Environmental working conditions include outdoor and indoor swimming pool environment; exposure to potentially hazardous chemicals, heat, cold, sun, and inclement weather conditions; and work around slippery surfaces.

This position is eligible for CalPERS retirement enrollment. Retirement formula based on membership status.
