Position Details
Under close supervision, maintain constant watch over a public swimming pool facility to enforce regulations and prevent accident, assist swimmers in distress and provide emergency and routine first aid. Create a safe and positive atmosphere for all participants and perform basic facility maintenance duties.
Examples of Duties
- Actively scan the pool, deck and locker rooms for safety and potential hazards and address the situation properly to remedy it
- Recognize and respond to emergencies in accordance with the facility emergency action plan
- Know and enforce all facility rules, policies, and procedures while providing a safe and enjoyable environment for all patrons
- Perform daily inspections or equipment and facility; correct and/or report any and all unsafe conditions to supervisor
- Teach swim lessons and aquatic classes to a variety of skill and age levels; evaluate participants according to program outlines and goals
- Perform other duties as assigned
Working Conditions
Work is at the Aquatics Center at San Bruno Park and is performed both indoors and out, with exposure to heat, sun, water, noise, dust, pollens and chemicals/cleaning agents used in an aquatics complex. There is potential for slip hazards when working near water and exposure to blood borne pathogens when rendering first aid. Working hours will include evenings, weekends, and holidays.

Physical Demands
Position requires the ability sit or stand for long periods of time; climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, walk frequently, lift and/or move objects up to 50 pounds; occasionally lift and/or move objects up to 100 pounds; perform simple and power grasping, pushing, pulling, and fine manipulation; verbal and hearing skills to effectively communicate with children and other staff; visual acuity is also required for observation.
Typical Qualifications
• Must be at least 15 years old
• Able to work mid-day shifts
• Lifeguard Instructor certification not required, but a plus and will be compensated at a higher base pay.
• Must pass a Livescan background check if over the age of 18
• Must test negative for Tuberculosis within the past 2 years
• Must submit a valid student work permit if still in high school
• Must be patient and courteous with all members of the public
• Be dependable and punctual
• Ability to sit, stand and walk for long periods of time.
• Ability to withstand exposure to the elements outdoors and in enclosed spaces
Supplemental Position Information:
Part-time temporary employees serve in an at-will capacity and understand that service with the City may be dismissed at any time. This position does not provide any benefits, apart from paid sick leave. In accordance with the Healthy Workplaces, Healthy Families Act of 2014, all temporary, part-time, and seasonal employees, who on or after July 1, 2015, work in California for 30 or more days within a year from the commencement of employment are entitled to paid sick leave for prescribed purposes. Employees will accrue one hour of paid sick leave for every 30 hours worked and are entitled to use accrued sick days beginning on the 90th day of employment. Employees may use up to 24 hours (or 3 days) of accrued sick leave in each year of employment.
