SMART-E After School Program Coordinator
The San Carlos School District created the SMART-E Program in response to the needs of parents who are seeking extended learning opportunities and care for their children beyond the regular school day. Children who grow up to be successful, contributing young adults have much more than academic skills; rather, they have developed a broad capacity to engage intellectually, socially, physically, emotionally, and civically. Out-of-school time can be instrumental in supporting a child’s growth and development in all each of these areas. The SMART-E Program strives to hire highly qualified professionals who will uphold and support this commitment to our community.
The After School Program Coordinator manages and supervises all operational aspects of the program. He/she is responsible for the safety and wellness of students and staff. He/she will interact with students, parents, and school staff daily, and is accountable to the SMART-E Director for all aspects of the site operations.
- Maintains a safe, healthy, fun, engaging environment for children.
- Monitors, positively directs and redirects, protects, encourages, and nurtures children.
- Administers first aid to students and contacts parents and emergency assistance in cases of serious illness or injury.
- Performs a variety of housekeeping functions to ensure that the facility is maintained in a healthful, safe and sanitary condition.
- Develops, prepares, and implements culturally responsible curriculum.
- Maintains ongoing communication with parents, school staff, SMART-E administrative staff and Director.
- Monitors on-site SMART-E enrichment classes, and provides feedback to Director.
- Attends, participates and contributes at staff meetings and required orientation and trainings.
- Maintains a positive approach to dealing with conflict, and believes that conflict provides learning opportunities.
- Maintains confidentiality about children and their families.
- Maintains daily log of program activities and parent communications.
- Responds promptly to parent and student-related requests.
- Prepares and presents verbal and written reports.
- Reports all suspect abuse to Director.
- Provides weekly and/or monthly schedule of activities and lesson plans.
- Completes administrative duties daily, replies to parents’ emails or phone calls, staff scheduling, etc.
- Maintains open, effective communication with Director, administrative staff, and team members.
- Supervises staff, provides on-site performance feedback, and serves as a professional role model.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
- Ability to respect the confidentiality of program-related incidents and information.
- Ability to understand and carry out oral and written directions.
- Ability to maintain a positive attitude toward and manage a group of children.
- Ability to sustain cooperative relationships with students, parents, team members, and school staff.
- Ability to see, read, and distinguish colors with or without vision aids; ability to hear and understand speech at normal levels, ability to communicate to others will clearly understand normal conversation.
- Ability to work and communicate effectively with children, parents, team members, and school staff.
- Ability to use and implement basic computer skills to produce emails, documents, reports, schedules.
- Ability to work effectively with people from all socio-economic and cultural backgrounds.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
- Minimum of three (3) years experience working in informal learning environments, after school programs, summer camps, early childhood, and/or similar environments.
- Bachelors Degree preferred.
- Early Childhood Education units, preferred.
- Youth and After School (YAS) Program experience, preferred.
- Current, valid drivers license, and ability to drive to work preferred.
- Current first aid and CPR training.
- Experience and desire to work with elementary school students.
- Ability to be a positive role model for children.
- Positive energy & works well in a team environment.
- Associates Degree required, Bachelor’s Degree a plus.
- Valid driver's license and ability to drive self to work daily.
- Minimum 1 year experience working with children in an education or informal learning environment.
- CPR/First Aid certification required.
- Indoor, outdoor, community, and classroom setting.
- Moderate stress work environment.
- Exposure to hot, cold, wet, or windy conditions caused by weather may also be experienced.
- Visual ability to read handwritten or typed documents and the display screen of various equipment and machines including a computer monitor.
- Mental acuity to perform the essential functions of this position in an accurate, neat, timely, and efficient fashion.
- Able to conduct verbal conversation in English or other designated language.
- Able to hear normal range verbal conversations (approximately 60 decibels).
- Able to stand and walk.
- Able to operate a motor vehicle.
- Able to squat, twist, stoop, kneel, and bend.
- Able to sit for sustained periods of time.
- Able to climb slopes, stairs, steps, ramps, and ladders.
- Able to lift up to fifty (50) lbs. frequently and sixty (60) lbs. occasionally.
- Able to push and pull objects weighing up to fifty (50) lbs. and occasionally up to sixty (60) lbs.
- Able to exhibit full range of motion for shoulder external rotation and internal rotation.
- Able to exhibit full range of motion for shoulder abduction and adduction.
- Able to exhibit full range of motion for elbow flexion and extension.
- Able to exhibit full range of motion for shoulder extension and flexion.
- Able to exhibit full range of motion for back lateral flexion.
- Able to exhibit full range of motion for hip flexion and extension.
- Able to exhibit full range of motion for knee flexion.
- Able to demonstrate manual dexterity necessary to operate computer keyboard and other required equipment or tools in a safe and effective manner.
