Description

The San Jose Police Department is recruiting to fill a Senior Systems Applications Programmer position. This position is in the Systems Development Division. The Systems Development Division supports a main campus and 20 field offices, ensuring availability and reliability of their critical software/hardware systems. This position reports directly to the Department Information Technology Manager – Applications Team.

 

The ideal candidate will provide significant technical assistance with major computer systems which support Police operations such as: developing and maintaining programming and associated tasks for application systems, including integrated software and hardware application configurations; analyze and define business processes for application functional requirements and technical specifications; and will participate in and direct software release and installation tasks; designing and delivering meaningful business reports using business intelligence reporting tools; knowledge and experience in computer systems applications. The Senior Systems Applications Programmer will be under general supervision, and may provide specific guidance to others on complex assignments. This position requires excellent command of verbal and written communications skills.

 

Specific duties include but are not limited to:

 

Understanding and experience using enterprise relational DBMS such as: Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server, IBM's Informix or other similar platforms.

 

Understanding of software application development including Web development environment and the understanding of industry Object Oriented Design (OOD) methods and practices. Demonstrate experience maintaining and/or performing maintenance of existing software applications.

 

Understanding complex database concepts as well as the implications of different database designs on future report generation.

 

Preparing and supervising preparation of testing of new or updated programs.

 

Supervising and training front-line staff.

 

Maintaining systems software and trains others on new software releases and upgrades.

Ideal Candidate

Education: A Baccalaureate Degree from an accredited college or university in Business Administration, Public Administration, Computer Technology, or a closely related field.

 

Experience: Three (3) years of increasingly progressive experience in computer systems applications programming.

 

Acceptable Substitutions: Additional years of directly related work experience may be substituted for up to a maximum of two years of the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis.

 

Licenses or Certificates: Possession of a valid California driver’s license.

 

Background: Submit to and successfully pass a comprehensive background investigation as required by the San Jose Police Department.
