Position: Recreation Specialist III
Salary: $18.83-22.45 hourly (depending on experience)

Hours: Sample Schedule: Monday-Friday, 2:00-7:00pm & Saturday or Sunday, 10:00am-4:00pm

THE POSTION: The City of San Mateo is seeking a reliable, responsible, enthusiastic individual to program and provide activities for a variety of ages from children to older adults. Activities might include arts and crafts, sports, nature activities, music and drama, small and large group games.
DUTIES: Under the general supervision of the Community Services Supervisor, typical duties may include but are not limited to the following: plan, organize and conduct recreation enrichment activities; supervise recreation participants, insuring that proper safety precaution are observed in assigned activities; maintain and care for equipment; prepare activity calendars, bulletin boards, lesson plans and/or coaching strategies as appropriate to help promote and plan activities effectively; assist in organizing and promoting activities; report to supervisors orally and in writing; complete assigned paperwork, such as timecards, attendance reports and/or incident and accident reports; follow Departmental and Citywide rules and regulations as they relate to general work procedures.
This position is responsible for driving a city vehicle. Some duties might include, but are not limited to the following: abiding by all traffic and safety laws, knowing the location and route of the trip destination in advance; attending to the cleanliness and basic vehicle safety check, as well as informing the Community Services Supervisor when the vehicle is not operating satisfactorily; performing related duties and responsibilities as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants must be 18 years or older, with a strong background in working in recreational programs for participants ranging in age from youth to older adults. This person should also be highly motivated, customer service oriented and a team player. The ability to communicate in Spanish is highly desired.
- Must have a high school diploma/ GED and some college work is highly desirable.
- Equivalent of 2 years professional recreation experience
- Must be CPR and First Aid certified (Certification and re-certification courses will be offered to new employees)
- Requires a flexible work schedule that may require occasional evening and weekend hours
- Communicate clearly, concisely, both orally and in writing
- Must be able to lift a minimum of 25 lbs.
- Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid California Class C Driver’s License
- Good Driving Record for up to 5 years
- Must be able to provide transportation to and from work
