The City of San Ramon is accepting applications for Police Officer—Academy Graduate or Academy Participant. Compensation will be determined based on academy status.
Academy Participant: Successful candidates who are currently participating in (or about to begin) a Police Academy will be hired as a Police Officer Trainee. The candidate will attend a Basic Peace Officer Standard Training (POST) academy to learn the principles, methods, and techniques employed by the journey level Police Officer. This is a non-sworn, “at-will,” temporary class which has no peace officer authority. Police Recruits are eligible for promotion to Police Officer upon successful completion of a Basic POST academy. Incumbents who do not successfully complete academy training may be released from employment.
Academy Graduate: Successful candidates who have graduated from a POST academy will be hired as a Police Officer. The Police Officer is responsible for a wide range of patrol and other related duties involving the prevention of crime, the protection of life/property, and the enforcement of laws.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Academy Participant: During the duration of the police academy, candidates will be required to work flexible hours and shifts, including weekends and holidays, wear a uniform, and maintain the standards established by POST, S.T.C. (Standards and Training for Corrections) and the San Ramon Police Department.
Academy Graduate: After completion of the police academy, candidates will be required to patrol the City within assigned areas to secure life and property; observe situations; report suspicious or criminal activity, hazardous conditions, and deter crime by providing high visibility. Responds to emergency calls, disturbances, thefts, burglaries, vehicle accidents, domestic disputes, suspicious activities and other incidents. Resolves problems, diffuses situations, enforces laws and ordinances, and provides information and assistance to the public. Observes, monitors, and controls routine and unusual traffic situations; issues warnings and citations as appropriate; provides direction and traffic control in accident or incident situations, special events or other congested situations. Makes arrests, transports for medical clearance and/or booking as required, serves warrants and subpoenas, secures crime scenes, collects and preserves evidence; interviews suspects, victims and witnesses. Performs complete investigations and/or cooperates with other law enforcement agencies providing investigative and case development support. Assists the City Attorney or District Attorney on cases and testifies in court when necessary. Prepares reports; prepares and maintains logs, records and accurate files. May assist in conducting special studies of crime prevention and performs other related duties as assigned.
- Must be at least 21 years of age at the time of employment and have no state or federal convictions for a crime punishable by imprisonment in a federal penitentiary or state prison;
- Combination of education equivalent to graduation from High School;
- Possess a valid California Class C driver’s license with a satisfactory driving record;
- Successful completion of a California POST approved Basic Police Academy with a valid California Academy POST Certificate; OR currently attending a POST approved Basic Police Academy and/or has been accepted to a POST approved Basic Police Academy;
- POST Entry Level Law Enforcement Test Battery (PELLETB) t-score (50 or better) within the last year;
- Work Sample Test Battery (WSTB) score of 384 or higher with a 1.5 mile run within the last year; and
- Ability to perform at minimal physical standards which include mobility, physical strength and stamina to respond to emergency situations and apprehend suspects, lift, push or pull individuals or objects weighting up to 100 pounds.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of: The English language and basic arithmetic concepts typical of that derived from basic coursework in these subjects at the high school level. Ability to: Comprehend and retain factual information pertaining to policies, rules, regulations, and laws and accurately apply what is learned; analyze situations and/or data and draw meaningful conclusions leading to a reasonable course of action; effectively communicate both verbally and in writing; establish and maintain effective working relationships with others; meet the physical requirements of a Basic P.O.S.T. academy.
During the police academy: CalPERS miscellaneous retirement, sick leave, and medical insurance will be offered within the first 90 days of employment in accordance with the Affordable Care Act.
Upon graduation from the academy: The City's excellent benefit package includes CalPERS safety retirement; Medical, Dental, and Vision insurance; 12 days of vacation with 1-4 years of service and 12 days of sick leave annually; long term disability; Employee Assistance Program; life insurance; and adoption benefits.

Interested individuals must submit a completed job application, and attach a copy of a Basic POST Academy Certificate or proof of Academy enrollment, T-Score, and WSTB score to be considered. All applications will be reviewed and the most qualified candidates will be invited to participate in an oral interview from which an eligibility list will be established. Prior to being hired, applicants will be required to pass a detailed background investigation including psychological, polygraph and medical examinations.
