The Park Maintenance Worker I will work in the Parks Division within the Public Works Department, performing semi-skilled and skilled labor to: maintain turf, trees, shrubs, groundcover, top dressings, irrigation systems, playground equipment, park furnishings, restrooms, and sport field equipment; operate and understands basic maintenance procedures for various power turf equipment, including but not limited to mowers of various sizes, edgers, blowers, chainsaws, and related equipment as required; perform a wide variety of skilled tasks involving the use of power equipment and hand tools in the areas of park and grounds maintenance, irrigation system installation, programming, and maintenance, tree/shrub trimming maintenance; perform the installation, maintenance and repair of various parks and grounds improvements, planting and trimming of trees/shrubs; understand fertilizer and herbicide products and application related to turf and ornamental plant care; and may performs other related duties as assigned.
The normal work schedule will be 20 hours per week (0.5 FTE), with the specific schedule determined based on the needs of the Division. The ideal candidate should like working cooperatively to accomplish established work goals and have an interest in providing the public with exceptional customer service. Attention to detail and commitment to safety requirements and practices are essential.
- Completion of 12th grade or equivalent.
- At least one year of experience in grounds care, landscape maintenance, or other related experience desired.
- Possession of California Department of Pesticide Regulation Qualified Applicator Certificate (QAC) in category B, C, or F desired.
- The selected individual must possess and maintain a valid Class C driver’s license and safe driving record from beginning to end of employment assignment and is required. The selected individual must also pass a criminal background check.
WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Must possess mobility to work in the field; to sit, stand, and walk on level, uneven, or slippery surfaces; frequently reach, twist, turn, kneel, bend, stoop, squat, crouch, grasp and make repetitive hand movement in the performance of daily duties; to climb and descend ladders, to operate varied hand and power tools and construction equipment, and to operate a motor vehicle and visit various City sites; strength, stamina, and mobility to perform medium to heavy physical work, to work in confining spaces and around machines; vision to read printed materials and a computer screen; and hearing and speech to communicate in person, before groups, and over the telephone or radio. Finger dexterity is needed to access, enter, and retrieve data using a computer keyboard or calculator and to operate above-mentioned tools and equipment. Employees must possess the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull materials and objects weighing up to 50 pounds, or heavier weights with the use of proper equipment and assistance from other staff.
