The City of South San Francisco (estimated population 65,000) is located on the west shore of the San Francisco Bay, in northern San Mateo County, 10 miles south of San Francisco. Perhaps best known as the “Industrial City,” South San Francisco has grown into a vibrant community that offers its citizens a place in which to live comfortably in fine residential areas; a place of recreation in parks, swimming pools, and marina; and a place to work in more than 2,800 firms and businesses.
The City is now seeking a strong leader and experienced fire management professional to serve as its new Fire Chief. The ideal candidate will be an innovative, progressive, and outside-the-box thinker who understands fire service traditions and works well within the fire command structure while also exploring creative ways to meet the Department’s mission. He or she will be someone who not only commands presence, but is also a service-minded individual with diplomacy, excellent interpersonal and communication skills, and the ability to connect with people at all levels. A candidate who is comfortable leading from the front and capable and comfortable making public presentations and interacting with external and internal stakeholders on a regular basis will be ideal.
Any combination of education and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities would be qualifying. Typically, a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in fire science, business or public administration, or a related field, and five (5) years of progressively responsible command experience in a capacity equivalent to Battalion Chief in the South San Francisco Fire Department, would provide such opportunity. An appropriate and valid California Driver’s License and a satisfactory driving record is required.
The annual salary range for the incoming Fire Chief is $205,125 – $248,202, DOQ. The City offers an attractive benefit package, as well as a CalPERS plan and participation in Social Security.
