Description

THE POSITION

The City of Union City is currently seeking a part-time, 30 hours per week, Recreation Program Coordinator who will specialize in Teen Programs and Special Events. Under general supervision, the Recreation Program Coordinator is responsible for the development, implementation, coordination, and direction of a broad range of recreation programs and services with an emphasis in innovative and cost covering teen programming and special event planning. The required work schedule may including working weekends and holidays as necessary.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

Duties may include but are not limited to the following: 

  • Plans, implements, manages, and evaluates recreational programs and activities for all ages; including volunteer services and special events.  

  • Develops, coordinates and implements creative program ideas.  

  • Interviews, trains, and supervises seasonal, part-time, and volunteer staff.  

  • Assists in grant and budget administration and other administrative functions, as assigned.  

  • Maintains supply and equipment inventory as needed.  

  • Develops positive relations with participants, families, and community residents.  

  • Answers inquiries and provides other services to the public, as needed.  

Ideal Candidate

QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of:

  • Theories, principles, methods, materials and equipment required for developing various recreation programs and activities;  

  • Principles and practices of program planning and event coordination;  

  • Safety practices and procedures, including First Aid, AED and CPR;  

  • Record keeping principles and practices;  

  • Techniques for dealing with a variety of individuals of various ages, socio-economic, ethnic and cultural backgrounds, both in person and on the telephone;  

  • Budgetary principles and practices; and  

  • Basic supervisory principles and practices.  

Ability to:

  • Plan, organize, coordinate and conduct various recreation programs and activities 

  • Develop and implement various programs and events; 

  • Plan and direct the work of assigned staff; 

  • Develop budgetary, staffing, and equipment requirements for proposed recreation programs and activities 

  • Maintain accurate records and files 

  • Prepare clear, concise reports, correspondence, instructions and other written materials;  

  • Work without close supervision in standard work situation;  

  • Effectively communicate; and 

  • Maintain effective working relationships with colleagues, participants, and the public.  

 

Licenses and Certificates: 

  • Possession of CPR, First Aid, and AED certification prior to the start of employment. 
  • Required for driving assignment: Possession of a valid California Commercial Driver’s License with a Passenger Endorsements and maintain a satisfactory driving record . 
  • Required for aquatic program functions: Possession of Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Certificate 

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Any combination equivalent to experience and education that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skills and abilities would be:

Bachelor’s degree and two (2) years of full-time experience implementing and conducting various recreation programs and activities.  

 

OTHER REQUIREMENTS

  • Must submit to TB testing.
  • Must successfully complete a background check, which includes fingerprinting and verification of education and experience.

Benefits

BENEFITS:

(The benefits as follows are for regular, full-time SEIU employees. Part- time SEIU employees' benefits are consistent with full-time employees' benefits except the City's contribution towards medical, dental, and vision benefits and accumulation of sick and vacation leave is prorated based on the employee's part-time schedule.)

Retirement: CalPERS enrollment in either 2% @ 60 (Classic Employees) or the new 2% @ 62 (New Employees) formula is dependent on the individual’s eligibility, as per AB 340. The City does not participate in Social Security therefore there are no Social Security tax deductions (except 1.45% Medicare).

Life Insurance: Premium is paid by the City. Life insurance and AD&D is equal to $100,000 each. Short-term disability insurance premium shared by the City and employee. Additional voluntary supplemental life insurance is available.

Medical/Dental: The City provides $2,000/month to purchase medical, dental and vision benefits.

Leaves: 8 hours of sick leave/month with no limit on accumulation; 80 hours of vacation per year for the first three years of service; 10 paid holidays/year plus 2 floating holidays (18 hrs.).

Other: Educational Reimbursement for approved coursework; 9/80 work schedule, with alternate Fridays off. Deferred Compensation Plan available.
