Description

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

 

Performs a variety of duties to insure the City of Winters swimming pool is a safe and enjoyable aquatic facility.  Lifeguards will be responsible for the supervision of pool patrons, maintaining order and enforcing established rules and safety procedures; participate in ongoing training and lifesaving programs; perform First Aid and CPR techniques; perform emergency water rescues; instruct and interact with aquatics program participants of all ages, including instruction of swim lessons; perform cashiering duties as needed, perform facility and equipment set-up, take down, and general housekeeping; responsible for the opening and closing of the facilities; maintain a positive attitude in dealing with the public; and perform related and other work as assigned or required.

 

•    Supervises the conduct/behavior of patrons and spectators, provides instruction on the proper use of equipment and/or pool areas and maintains a safe aquatic environment

•    Initiates rescues of persons in distress including first aid and resuscitation

•    Assists in preparing and maintaining accident/incident reports

•    Assists in the enforcement of department safety and operational policies

•    Assists the Records Clerk/Records & Information Manager or their designee in organizing, supervising, and evaluating swim instructional classes and specialty aquatic programs

•    Assists in presenting and promoting special events associated with the aquatics program

•    Assists the pool Records Clerk/Records & Information Manager or their designee in the purchasing of aquatic equipment and supplies by making recommendations/suggestions

•    Assists with the maintenance and cleanliness of the pool restrooms in accordance with State Health and Safety Codes

•    Monitors pool deck and restroom areas

•    Completes  reports  related  to  operations  of  the  swim  facility  as  necessary  including accident and incident reports

•    Maintains good public relations by working cooperatively with public and employees

•    Performs related work as assigned by the Records Clerk/Records & Information Manager

•    Explains and interprets facility operations and safety policies, procedures, and regulations to the public

 

 

WORKING CONDITIONS

 

Work is generally performed at the Bobbie Greenwood Swim Center.  Depending on the task being accomplished, the work would be done at the pool, on the pool deck, or in the pool water.  Includes weekend, holiday and evening work.  Pressures may be generated due to the responsibility of lifeguarding.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

 

Work may involve prolonged standing, as well as strenuous in and out of the water rescues. Aquatic program employees spend a majority of time out of doors and are subject to normal variations in weather including high exposures to sunlight.

 

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

 

Lifeguards will receive general, technical and functional supervision from the Supervising Lifeguard.

 

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

 

The Lifeguard position is distinguished from the Supervising Lifeguard position in that the latter will be responsible for all of the duties listed above, and will include supervision of the Lifeguard staff, will assist in the scheduling of lifeguards, and work under the immediate supervision of the Records Clerk/ Records & Information Manager.  Supervising Lifeguard must be at least 18 years of age and possess a minimum of two years of experience in the Lifeguard position.

QUALIFICATIONS

 

Lifeguard Abilities:

 

Knowledge of instructional aquatics activities and equipment; of the principals and techniques of first aid, water safety, and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), and Automated External Defibrillator (AED).

 

Education and Experience

 

Education:                 Must be currently enrolled in or graduated from an educational institute working toward a high school diploma or G.E.D equivalent.

 

Experience:                None.  Highly desirable:  One (1) year experience as a volunteer, lifeguard, or swim instructor at an organized Aquatics facility assisting with public swim sessions and/or lesson instruction.

 

 

Other Requirements:

 

Certificates:                 Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED

                                    First Aid for Public Safety Personnel (Title 22)

                                    23 Hour Initial Training

 

Age:                            Must be at least 15 years old by time of employment.

 

 

 

Supervising Lifeguard Abilities:

 

                In addition to the qualifications for Lifeguard:

 

Knowledge of instructional aquatics activities and equipment; of the principals and techniques of first aid, water safety, and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), and Automated External Defibrillator (AED).  Any combination equivalent to experience and education that would provide the knowledge and abilities would be qualifying.  A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

 

Education and Experience

 

Education:                Equivalent to completion of the twelfth (12th) grade, GED, or higher level degree.

 

Experience:                Two (2) years experience as a lifeguard and  swim instructor at an organized Aquatics facility assisting with public swim sessions and/or lesson instruction.  Highly desired:  Prior experience in a supervisory position.

 

Other Requirements:

 

Certificates:                 Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED

                                    First Aid for Public Safety Personnel (Title 22)

                                    23 Hour Initial Training

 

Age:                            Must be at least 18 years old by time of employment.
