The County of Yuba is recruiting to fill the Deputy Sheriff classification. Deputy Sheriff perform a wide variety of patrol officer and related duties required to effectively respond to and resolve the normal scope of peace situations, including the protection of life and property, enforcement of laws and ordinances, criminal investigation, crime prevention and suppression, case preparation and testimony, and providing information and assistance to the public and perform related duties as assigned. Incumbents may be assigned to a specific geographic area for patrol, investigations, crime prevention or other peace officer-related functions. Deputy Sheriff Minimum: Graduation from high school and possession of a valid California P.O.S.T. Basic Certification.
Lateral: In addition to the Deputy Sheriff minimum, at least one year of current, full-time, paid patrol experience in a California municipal or state police agency, county sheriff's department or California Highway Patrol, or similar as defined in California Penal Code §830.1 or §830.2, which included successful completion of a Patrol Field Training Program and probationary period.

Preferred: In addition to the minimum, paid or volunteer law enforcement experience and/or experience as a patrol officer.
Special Requirements: Applicants are required to submit a background packet (Personal History Statement) with their application. Must meet the State of California requirements for peace officer status (§830.1 or §830.2 CA Penal Code) including, passing a detailed background investigation with a fingerprint check, no felony convictions, passing a medical exam and psychological exam. Applicants must be a U.S. Citizen at time of appointment (pursuant to Government Code Section 1031) and at least 18 years of age. Possess and maintain firearms qualification. DMV printout prior to hire.
Deputy Sheriff Hiring Range: $4,934 to $5,428 Mo. + Benefits
Lateral Hiring Range: $5,428 to $6,415 Mo. + Benefits
**Lateral Hiring Incentives: Must be currently employed with another California Law Enforcement agency and meet the minimum lateral criteria as outlined above in the Ideal Candidate Requirements.**
MERIT INCREASE: Typically 5% each year for the first 7 years
RETIREMENT: Safety Classifications
Classic: 2% @ 50
New: 2.7% @ 57 (1/1/13 CalPERS pension Reform)
VACATION: 12 days for first 5 yrs with incremental increases every 5 yrs thereafter, up to 20 yrs
HOLIDAYS: An average of 13 paid holidays per year (this includes 2 floating holidays)
SICK LEAVE: Accrued every payroll period, up to 12 days per yr
HEALTH: The County pays 90% of the Basic Plan Premium for employee only or 70% for employee and eligible dependent(s)
DENTAL/VISION: The County pays 100% of the Basic Plan premium for employee only or 80% for employee and eligible dependent(s)
LIFE: County provides $50,000 in life insurance coverage
DEFERRED COMP: Voluntary Deferred Compensation plan(s) are available
EMPLOYEE ASSISTANCE PROGRAM: County paid confidential counseling program for up to 5 sessions per incident per policy year.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Education and experience as detailed on the employment application will be thoroughly reviewed. Please include all experience, education, and training pertinent to the knowledge, skills and abilities required for the position. This is an essential part of the process and will be used to determine further eligibility to participate in the next phase of the selection procedures.
Applicants must complete a required supplemental questionnaire with the employment application. This questionnaire is included as part of the on-line CalOpps application or available upon request from the Human Resources Department. The purpose of this questionnaire is to identify your qualifications and experience in job-related areas. It is critical that you fill out the supplemental questionnaire completely, listing all information which might demonstrate your qualifications in the rating areas. Be sure to include on your employment application dates and employment history. Failure to complete the supplemental questionnaire will result in your application being withdrawn from the recruitment.
PERSONAL HISTORY STATEMENT (PHS) - Peace Officer POST 2-251:
All applicants that meet the minimum qualifications and are certified to an employment list as eligible for hire will be required to provide a completed Personal History Statement (PHS) directly to the Sheriff's Department prior to or at the department interview. A preliminary review of the PHS will be conducted prior to or at the department interview before any employment offers are made. EMPLOYMENT ELIGIBILITY LIST:
An employment eligibility list will be established for those applicants who successfully meet the minimum qualifications. This list will be held for a minimum of six (6) months from the date the list is certified. The employment list is an alphabetical order and provided to the department for additional selections processes which includes a Personal History Statement Pre-Review and department interviews.
The Sheriff’s Department will notify the applicant of the date and time of his/her interview. The applicant will be asked a series of questions about his/herself and his/her related experience, education and training that exhibit the knowledge, skills and abilities essential to the job. The applicant may also be asked questions about hypothetical situations to test his/her ability to make decisions and use sound judgment and common sense.
