Description

The City of Berkeley invites you to apply for the position of Crime Analyst in the Police Department! In this role, you will have the opportunity to perform a wide variety of analyses to provide timely and pertinent information relative to crime patterns and trends. You will assist operational and administrative personnel in planning the deployment of resources for the prevention and suppression of criminal activities, aiding the investigative process and contributing to internal policy. You'll utilize the Berkeley Police Department’s Transparency Hub and software programs to analyze department and develop data tools for use both internally and externally. 

The ideal candidate is a tech-savvy, high-integrity professional dedicated to bridging the gap between raw data and operational public safety. Experience in law enforcement with tactical triage, strategic analysis, and investigative support is desired. The role requires using data sources such as CAD/911, ALPR, and camera networks to provide patrol officers with immediate situational awareness and investigators with actionable insights.

Operating within a dynamic environment, the analyst would possess the professional maturity to collaborate seamlessly with personnel at every level of the department and maintain productive relationships with outside agencies. The analyst would be skilled in identifying crime trends and informing proactive, data-driven policing. Beyond technical proficiency, the successful candidate must be an adept researcher capable of synthesizing disparate data sources to assist detectives in solving active cases and identifying criminal associations.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
A typical way of gaining the knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position is:
Equivalent to graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a major in criminal justice, public administration, urban affairs, statistics, or a related field and at least two (2) years of professional experience in crime analysis or systems operations.

Experience in a law enforcement environment working with GIS, familiarity with National Incident-Based Reporting System (NIBRS) protocols, and a State Department of Justice Crime Analysis Certificate are desirable.

Must successfully complete a Police Department background investigation and evaluation, including a criminal history investigation. Must be able to travel to various locations within and outside the City of Berkeley to meet the program needs and to fulfill the job responsibilities. When driving on City business, maintenance of a valid California driver's license and satisfactory driving record is required.
