The city of Carmel-by-the-Sea is one square mile in area, with a population that has remained steady at between 4,000 and 4,100. Through the diligent efforts of dedicated and hard-working citizens and their elected and appointed officials, Carmel-by-the-Sea has retained much of its heritage and the quality of life which drew those first settlers to its midst.

Carmel-by-the-Sea was first incorporated as a City in 1916. It was founded by artists and writers - among them Jack London, George Sterling, Mary Austin and Robinson Jeffers. Carmel-by-the-Sea is resplendent in rich natural beauty and prides itself on its white sand beach, luxuriant landscaped bluffs, verdant urban forest, natural parklands and roadside greenbelts.
