Deputy Director of Environmental Services Water Distribution/Sewer Collection

The City of Sunnyvale is currently recruiting for a Deputy Director of Environmental Services – Water Distribution/Sewer Collection to join the Environmental Services Department. The Deputy Director of Environmental Services – Water Distribution/Sewer Collection leads a team of 46 staff and is  responsible for planning, organizing, and directing the operation, maintenance, and improvement of the City’s potable and recycled water distribution and sanitary and storm sewer collection systems; ensuring compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local regulations; preparing and administering the division’s operating and capital improvement budgets; overseeing asset management and long-term infrastructure planning; coordinating with regional agencies, contractors, and community stakeholders; and fostering a safe, customer-focused, and high-performing team culture.

The Essentials

Minimum Qualifications 

To be considered for the Paralegal position, applicants must meet one of the following eligibility criteria.  Please note: The required written declaration from a supervising attorney[1] verifying your qualifications is not required at the time of your initial application submission. 2. A paralegal certificate or degree from a nationally or regionally accredited, or Bureau for Private Postsecondary Education-approved post-secondary institution that requires successful completion of 24 semester (or equivalent) units in law related courses plus at least one (1) year of law-related experience under the supervision of a licensed attorney. The law-related experience must be verified by a written declaration from the supervising attorney confirming the applicant is qualified to perform paralegal tasks.

3. A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university plus at least one (1) year of law-related experience under the supervision of a licensed attorney. The law-related experience must be verified by a written declaration from the supervising attorney confirming the applicant is qualified to perform paralegal tasks.

5. A high school diploma or GED, plus at least three (3) consecutive years of law-related experience under the supervision of a licensed attorney. The law-related experience must be verified by a written declaration from the supervising attorney confirming the applicant is qualified to preform paralegal tasks. The law-related experience also must have been completed withing the four (4) years immediately prior to applying for the Paralegal position.

[1] The supervising and declaring attorney must be an active member of the California bar in good standing for at least the past three (3) years or must have practiced in the federal courts of California for at least the past three (3) years.

Highly Desirable Qualification(s):

• Demonstrated proficiency with MS Office Suite and technology tools relevant to legal practice.

What You’ll Do 

• Serve as a vital liaison between the City Attorney’s Office and various City departments, facilitating the accurate and timely flow of information.
• Conduct fact investigations and perform foundational legal research to support casework.
• Draft and prepare legal correspondence, including notices, contracts, resolutions, ordinances, and discovery requests and responses.
• Monitor and maintain tracking systems for subpoenas, legal claims, and lawsuits, ensuring strict adherence to relevant deadlines
• Coordinate and process requests under the California Public Records Act.
• Provide informed guidance to City Staff and members of the public regarding the City’s legal processes and procedures.
• Manage and maintain confidential legal files and records.

Work Schedule 

This position is primarily onsite and requires in-office attendance five days per week for the first six months. Following six months of employment and a demonstrated record of exceptional performance, the Paralegal may be considered for a hybrid schedule, which includes the option to work remotely one day per week.

Position Duties

The Fleet Management Division in Public Works Department is responsible for the management of the City’s fleet including the comprehensive inspection, maintenance, repair, acquisition, and disposal. The City’s vehicle and equipment fleet currently consists of over 2,700 assets. 

The Department of Public Works Fleet Management Division is recruiting to fill one (1) Equipment Mechanic Assistant I/II (EMA I/II) position. The EMA I/II is responsible for performing inspections, communicating with other staff and customers, servicing, installation of electronic electrical equipment, ordering parts, entering data in the fleet management system, road testing and diagnosing problems to make various repairs and adjustments on automotive, heavy truck and/or heavy equipment. While working under general supervision, the EMA I/II will be expected to perform safely and follow all rules required by the City of San Jose. These positions, depending on facility assignment, will require working various shift hours and overtime.

Equipment Mechanic Assistant (Parts) position orders, receives, and issues automotive, truck, and equipment parts. This position also researches and identifies select parts for issue, stocks and verifies inventories, and utilizes the fleet database to manage inventories.

The Code Enforcement Officer will respond to citizen concerns and proactively identify violations such as property maintenance issues, and zoning infractions. You will educate the public on code requirements through clear and respectful communication and work collaboratively with other city departments and external agencies to resolve issues. The Code Enforcement Officer is distinguished from the Supervisor by performing work of moderate difficulty and more routine tasks and duties assigned to this position within this classification series. These tasks involve inspections and enforcement of applicable ordinances pertaining to residential and commercial properties, housing, building construction, and other related regulations. Additionally, the Code Enforcement Officer will issue notices, citations, and follow up on compliance efforts in a fair and consistent manner. It is also imperative that the Code Enforcement Officer maintain accurate case files and documentation for possible legal proceedings.
